PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Its like treading water, way out the back, waiting for a wave and nothing is happen-

ing, other than the occasional shark fin. That is the frustrating reality of Covet 19 and

I suspect it will go on for some time.

The core issue regarding meetings is it is very hard to get a venue that will hold 30

plus members and still comply with the State government regulations. No clubs,

pubs, restaurants, or night clubs of ill repute are at the stage where they will

entertain such meetings.

We are working with the Sailing Club on perhaps a 30 max meeting and will keep you

informed.

The board still meets at the Golf Club with a maximum 16 persons.

That will be the second Wednesday of the month from 10am to noon. As the board really exceeds 10 persons a few

spots for visitors to sit in the gallery and observe are available. Let me know if anyone is interested but please note no

heckling or throwing of objects at board members is permitted.

In the meantime, what activities are on the horizon or at least starting to happen.

Bunnings in NSW and Port Macquarie was on then off due to the flare up in cases in NSW. We wait with baited breath.

The Wayne Richards football canteen is now back on weekly for approximately 12 weeks and this is being run by Jill

and a few faithful, lovely, organised volunteers. Even here crowds are well down and the viability of the canteen is sus-

pect to say the least.

Bob Forster and Fred Hynes are going to SW rocks to collect the lensometer machine. Hereafter to be called the beast.

We propose to become the coastal Lions Eye glass centre for the District. This will involve cleaning and grading second

President Message Cont:

If you think about it, a few hours work here in Port Macquarie could change the life of someone who has had limited

vision. It opens the door to an education, to knowledge, and to learning. Great worthwhile project and a project that

could grow exponentially with a bit of creativity. Will be in touch re volunteers.

Goal Point Lions will happen in August but it is unlikely we can turn the event into a fund-raising day. Will call for vol-

unteers shortly.

A reminder to let the Right Honourable the Treasurer, Stuart Symonds, know about your position re accepting the 6-

month free membership. It is important.

Meanwhile ideas, input, criticism, and a touch of rebellion are all welcome. Stay safe and stay out of trouble.

Warm Regards

Rob Bruce -President 2020-2021

JULY BOARD MEETING

The first time in a looooong time, the Board met face to face on

Following is a summary of that meeting from Secretary Paula

◊ DG Kevin Thornton’s visit - is scheduled for 19th August. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, acceptable venue etc., TPLC

are in discussions as to how we can cater for his and Lion Julie’s visit.

◊ Australian Day Markets - no confirmation as yet as to whether this will go ahead as The Bicentenary celebrations may

override Australia Day activities due COVID-19 restrictions.

◊ Port Macquarie Bunnings had offered TPLC barbecues with our first to be 26th July. (Sadly, Bunnings have rescinded

their offer).

◊ WRP Canteen resumed on 19th July with strict COVID-19 restrictions. President Rob says “”The board will ensure all members are well trained in new procedures. That a captain will be appointed to each shift whose role will be to ensure, we as a club and each individual adheres to the new procedures. It is a changing new world and we will all need to adapt

if we want to survive."

◊ TPLC’s 2020-2021 Directory have been distributed/posted to all Members. Full of information and the latest contact de-

tails for TPLC Club Members, 201n1 District Cabinet Officers and Zone 5 Clubs, as well as relevant Lion information.

◊ Gaol Point Lions Park - replacement Lions are ready to be installed. Along with Port Macquarie Lions Club, we are

waiting for a convenient date to suit both Clubs. Let’s hope this happens before the return of any COVID-19 restrictions.

◊ Christmas Cakes - sadly, TPLC will NOT be able to sell in Bunnings this year. Another idea is to approach local busi-

nesses.

◊ Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce have asked if volunteer clubs would be interested in joining the committee -

President Rob is in discussion on behalf of TPLC.

◊ Gem Garden at PMBH - Even though the garden itself is closed to the general public, TPLC are still not able to have ac-

cess. There is no time indication as to when we can.

◊ MD (Multi District) 2020-2021 Directory - If any Member wishes to have a digital copy (no hard copies are available),

please contact Secretary Paula and she will email a copy. Sorry too many pages to print.

◊ Willawarrin Hotel - TPLC, along with other local Clubs were to have a thank-you luncheon in April after the delivery of garden/shed tools for those affected by bushfires in the local area in Jan/Feb. Sadly, due to COVID-19 restrictions etc,

this cannot go ahead.

◊ Eye Health - Lion Fred Hynes has advised that he is the collection point for unused glasses (reading and sun glasses) for The Coastal Clubs of N1. One of the Tamworth LCs collects for the country area of N1. Fred advised he isn't in a posi-

tion to clean and/or grad glasses.

KNOW YOUR MEMBERS - - GARY AND LOIS WIGGINS

We are relatively new comers to Port Macquarie Garry arrived 2013 and Lois 2014.

Garry born in Cobar and reared on a sheep station 130k south

west of Cobar educated for 7 years at Barker College in Sydney

and years 11 and 12 in Dubbo NSW.

On finishing school worked with a survey firm for four years as

a survey technician, was married to my first wife at the age of

twenty and purchased my first farm in 1976 at a little place

called Collie NSW.

I carried on farming for 37 years in the Collie district running

sheep and cattle and growing grain ( wheat, barley, canola,

chick peas, faba beans and field peas) and reared our three

children at our home farm “Yugilbar”.

In 1982 I established an agricultural crop spraying business ap-

plying agricultural chemicals on farms from the central west NSW to St George in QLD.

In 2013 I sold my farm and my spraying business and moved to Port Macquarie were my daughter and her family are

living. I met Lois, we got along well and when I ask her to marry me in 2014, holy smoke she said “yes” happy days. We

were married in April 2015 and are living a happy life up in Orr Street with good friends and neighbours all around us.

Lois, born and reared in Kempsey NSW educated at the local high school, enjoyed playing hockey and basketball as a

young girl, fell in love and in 1978 married her high school sweetheart at the age of nineteen. Barry a butcher and Lois

then moved to Southwest Rocks and opened a butcher shop, had there two children there and in 1991 sold the

butcher shop and moved back to Kempsey.

Lois managed the deli at the IGA then went to the King Gee factory for a time until it closed in 1999 then back to the

IGA. Barry worked at the Akubra factory. Unfortunately Barry lost his battle with prostate cancer in 2012.

After losing my long time partner of 34 years I was very lonely and felt like the third wheel at most social gatherings, I

immersed myself in work and felt like this would be my lot for ever. However a chance meeting in December 2013

opened up my heart and my future when I met my now second husband Garry. We seemed to just be right for each

other and low and behold in 2014 he asked me to marry him, holy smoke happy days .

We are happy up at Orr St , we enjoy eating out with friends, camping and travelling around this great land of ours and

look forward to our future in Port Macquarie, interacting with our sixteen grandchildren, our friend and Tacking Point

Lions.

These glorious insults are from an era “ before” the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words:

A SOCIAL EVENT IN DIFFICULT TIMES

On a dull, slightly wet, but calm Saturday afternoon on the banks of the Hastings River, we had a July social event at

the Sailing club for some 24 Lions members and friends. Very laid back affair with plenty of conversion and joy at get-

ting together after such a long time.

Organised by the lovely, but injured Monica (me) with a touch of Christmas

in July feel (25th July) this social event, through a raffle, raised enough

money to buy drinks for winners Monica, Angelo Mifsud, Derek Gillespie

Jeanette Deguara and of course the parched President.

That event will be held at the Royal Hotel in August at a date that suits

these lucky winners. Members will be invited to come along and watch the

happy winners drink their hard-earned raffle contributions.

The much-heralded

sunset on the Hastings

River did not happen

much to everyone’s

disappointment. Complaints have been lodged with the powers to

be; however we suspect they will blame the virus.

Highlight of the afternoon

was the awarding of the

Lion of the year. Remember you all voted for it. Winner was the hard working,

always there, Paula Forster. Our President claimed it was down to one vote

and that was Bob Forster’s.

(It should be noted that was not true and he

was just stirring up trouble and has been repri-

manded accordingly.

It was our first attempt at getting back to

some level of normality and we will be going

forward, by holding a social event of some

kind, somewhere every month. Numbers are,

by the nature of our times, be limited so when

you get the heads up let me (Monica) know ASAP.

For all those Lions and guests who came thanks for a great afternoon. To Stuart Sy-

monds thanks for letting us use the Sailing Clubs premises.

Raffle prize winners were

1st

prize to Angelo Mifsud (of course no surprise as he always wins) – a drink

with Monica and the new President

2nd

prize to Derek Gillespie – two drinks with Monica and the new President

3rd

prize to Jeanette Deguara – 3 drinks with Monica and the new President

4th

prize to ? (I don’t know)

One or all of the above I guess) - free ride in booze bus with me (Monica)

WHAT HAPPENING AROUND THE TRAPS

LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL

FIVE YEAR STRAERGIC PLAN

We’re celebrating the success of LCI Forward, our five-year strategic plan has set us on the path for our next century of

service. International President Dr Jung-Yu; Choi recently announced, with some pride, that the five-Year Strategic

Plan has been achieved, with over 250 million people receiving help from Lions.

LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION

Earlier this month, central and southern Japan experienced historic and

devastating flooding. In just six short hours, more than 15 inches of rain

pummelled the area, triggering dangerous flash flooding and landslides.

Three million residents on the island of Kyushu, a quarter of the popula-

tion, were told to evacuate.

LCIF has provide US$100,000 in immediate relief to children, families, and communities suddenly struggling with every-

day needs…struggling to remain safe. Compounding the enormous challenge left in the wake of the floods is the

coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION MONTREAL 2021 Believe it on not but in these uncertain times of International travel and COVID-

19—Registratrion for the 103rd International Convention to be held 25-29

DISTRICT 201n1

A face-face District Cabinet Meeting was held last Weekend 25/26th July at Woolgoolga.

Unfortunately neither Bob, Fred or myself could attend , so we have very little feedback on what occurred.

But what we do know is that an election to fill the vacant position of 2019-2020 Second Vice President was held and

the successful candidate was Lion Rosaline Davis. Following is her resume

A former Port Macquarie health professional is speaking out about

her experiences with dementia to help reduce stigma.

She’s teamed up with Mid North Coast Health, producing a video

with an important message.

Letter to Sarah from Dementia Australia

Peta from the Communications team just sent me some impressive

statistics from the Dementia Australia Facebook post about your

video. The post reached 30,000 people! Which is beyond the reach

of our regular Dementia Australia audience.

There were almost 700 reactions and many positive comments.

Kaele also shared the video with the Dementia Australia Executive

team. I saw that your video is almost at 5000 views. Congratulations, it is clearly resonating with many people.

Koala Smart on “Sunrise”

A couple of weeks ago when Sunrise was in Port Macquarie and Jenny managed to

score a photo with Sam

She said that Sam was most impressed with our Lions Club and the work we have done

around Port.

He was up at Gaol Point the day before and saw all the work that had been done

there. Jenny told him that Port Macquarie Lions Club and TPLC worked together on

that project and both clubs maintain it.

TIME FOR A GIGGLE!!!

MEDICAL OPINION ON COVID-19

Medical experts were asked if it is time to ease the lockdown, these are the

experts opinions:

• Allergists were in favour of scratching it,

• Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves

• Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it,

• Neurologists thought the government had a lot of nerve.

• Obstetricians felt certain everyone was labouring under a misconception, while

• Ophthalmologists considered the idea short-sighted.

• Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!"

• Paediatricians said, "Oh, grow up!"

• Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness,

• Radiologists could see right through it.

• Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing and

• Pharmacists claimed it would be a bitter pill to swallow.

• Plastic Surgeons opined this would "put a whole new face on the matter."

• Podiatrists thought it was a step forward,

• Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.

• Anaesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas,

• and those lofty Cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say, “No”.

• In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the a**holes

LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL CODE OF ETHICS

TO SHOW my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to

the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.

TO SEEK success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but

to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of

unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.

TO REMEMBER that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down an-

other’s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.

WHENEVER a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position of action towards

others, to resolve such doubt against myself.

TO HOLD friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists

not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship

demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.

ALWAYS bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my

community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give

them freely of my time, labor and means.

TO AID others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and

my substance to the needy.

TO BE CAREFUL with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not

destroy.

LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL PURPOSES

To organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions

clubs.

To coordinate the activities and standardise the administration of Li-

ons clubs.

To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of the

world.

To promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.

To fund and otherwise serve the civic, cultural, social and moral wel-

fare of the community.

To assist financially, culturally, socially, and morally the disabled, dis-

advantaged and infirm of the community both directly and also indi-

rectly.

To unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mu-

tual understanding.

To provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public in-

terest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion

shall not be debated by club members.

To encourage service-minded people to serve their community with-

out personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and pro-

mote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public

works and private endeavours.
