As you are well aware there have been more relaxaon of the rules in
relaon to Covid 19, and the U3A commiee is encouraging groups to think
about where we go from here! Taking into consideraon, quite a few of us,
including myself, fall into the - slightly vulnerable over 70’s group!
However, due to the size of our group - trying to comply with the required
distancing would be impossible, and to be si*ng for a couple of hours with face
masks on, with no refreshments is no consideraon. I have ruled out the
possibility of moving our venue (for ‘black-out’) reasons, and the system of
1st
come 1st
serve basis I feel would be unfair to those of you who may miss
the opportunity of our social gathering! I personally think we should wait unl
the cinema/theatre advice rules are put into acon for every members safety.
There is no doubt that I’m sure many of us have struggled to ‘ride the storm’
and I congratulate those of you who have kept in touch with supporng
phone calls and offers of shopping, we have so much to be grateful for,
not just friends, family, and neighbours but the connuing support of the U3A.
However, we have 9-months of films previously prepared and waing to enjoy
in the future so I would appreciate your connuing support and thoughts on
how you think we should proceed, or just ring for a chat on (01636) 923 648

NEWARK & DISTRICT AGM
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak and current lockdown we
were unable to hold the Annual General Meeng in June.
With the connued requirement for social distancing it now
seems inevitable that we will not be able to hold our
meeng in the normal way. We are therefore giving noce of
our intenon to hold a meeng ulising all methods and
technologies available to us. It will not be perfect but our
Organisaon thrives on finding soluons to problems.
Everyone should have now received details on how to take
part in this virtual meeng. If not please contact Anita Smith
– Tel: 01636 646559 or email: ‘[email protected]’.

Non Ficon Book Group
While we are unable to meet face to face, the group is connuing by using
Zoom video meengs! We decided that while we're down during the Covid-19
pandemic, we are each going to read a non-ficon book of our own choice, and
then report back to everyone at the Zoom meeng what the book was about
and what we thought of it. (Kind of like having a personal reviewer for books
you might choose to read!)
Because our format is now "Read-and-Tell', and being on Zoom allows any
number of people to join, you are invited to read a book this month and join us
at our next video meeng. Here are the details - click on the link (or copy and
paste into your browser) on the day and me and join us!
Julea Merlin is inving you to a scheduled Zoom meeng.

New Group
“LIVING HISTORY GROUP”
I was speaking recently to a lady who was one of the founder members of the
Newark & District U3A. She had some fascinang snippets to recount & I
thought, what a great idea it would be to start up our own “Living History
Group”. All too oNen, things are forgoen over me & I know many members
will find it interesng to learn how our branch has evolved & developed over
the years.
Under normal circumstances, we would have had a sign-up sheet at the
Monthly Meeng & discussed the idea further. Now of course, we can only do
this via the internet & this is where I’m pu*ng out a cry for help to you all.
Almost certainly, a lot of the people who may have been original members will
not have access to the internet. With this in mind, do you know any of them?
Could you give them a call & tell them what we’ve hoping to do? Or pass their
details on to me & I’ll be only too pleased to chat with them & ask for their
early experiences with the U3A.
If you have personal experience of those early days, would you like to share
them with us. For example, tell us what the original groups/oungs/trips/
meengs/meals out/get-togethers were like. It would be so interesng if we
could make these into a permanent chronicle of events from day one.
Eventually, we could even set up our own “Living History” website, maybe
even publish a “Living History” record for interested Members to purchase if
they so wished, as a means of raising funds for our U3A. However, all that’s in
the future. For now, if you have anything to recount about your early
experiences with the infant Newark & District U3A, please do get in touch.
We’d love to hear from you!
You can send any informaon to me at my email address:-
[email protected]. Alternavely, if you know of anyone who may be
able to help but who doesn’t have internet please pass this idea on to them &
ask if they’d like to give me a call. My telephone number is 07790 719870.
Many thanks for your help & I look forward to hearing from you.

Walking Group
Not much happening with the group however I hear lots of you are using
walking as your daily exercise. I have a relaon in Canada who
recommends Leslie Sansone for indoor sessions when the weather is not good
but she is very enthusiasc and American. My guess is that the weather will
have to be quite bad to stop you under the present lockdown. You can find
Leslie's videos here hps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njeZ29umqVE&t=23s
If you want to look at more leisurely and informave videos I can recommend

Art Appreciaon Group
Hope all is well with you. Just to let you know, I discussed the possibility of how
- and when- we should consider meeng physically with the group at our
session last week, and the general feeling is that we should connue via Zoom
for the foreseeable future. Also, it seems that the venue we use (Newark
Bowling club) has no plans to re-open as yet. Fortunately, as the Art
Appreciaon sessions are predominantly visual, Zoom works very well for us.
See you next week (via Zoom of course!)
Kind regards, Des.
Cra= and Cha>er Group
We have been meeng on Zoom fortnightly since the
lockdown. We have a general catchup and then show any cra items we`ve
been working on. We have decided not to meet again at Coddington
Community Centre unl at the earliest October - and then only of course
if the centre is open.
Best wishes Sue Eddowes
Singing for Fun & Recorder Groups
Unfortunately I really do not think it is going to be possible for the Singing for
fun group and the recorder group to meet before January at the earliest. The
guidelines, at the moment, are that no singing should take place, or blowing of
wind instruments. They are conducng research into these.
There are also strict guidelines about the re opening of Community Halls. St.
Giles Community Hall, at the moment, is having limited reopening in August,
but toilets and kitchen not to be used.
I have been in regular contact with the groups, and will let them know the
situaon.
Best wishes
Alison
Tai Chi group
There are two Tai Chi Zoom sessions, both currently running twice a week.
The dedicaon of all group members to this diligent pracce for their health
and well being is impressive!
Generally we have all become used to working with the technology and barring
an occasional loss of broadband, sessions are running smoothly [of course I’m
touching wood as I say this!]
With Mike’s help we even managed to introduce music briefly, to help with the
flow of sequences. This was inspired by watching a short video of internaonal
Tai Chi Champions, showcasing several of the weapons and empty hand styles
to music.
Current sessions remain as below :
Mondays; 10.0am – 11.25am approx
and 11.45am – 12.15 pm approx
Thursdays: 2.0pm – 3. 25 pm approx.
and 4.0pm - 5.25pm approx
I’m in touch with Ferndale Community Centre, with a
view starng ‘live’ classes back in the hall, but between
Ferndale’s list of procedures to be followed; a list from
the TAO, my training organizaon, plus a list from the
BCCMA [an overarching body for all maral arts,
including Tai Chi], plus a list from Sport England, who
run everything – I’ve not managed it yet, but I’m
persevering!
Outdoor session is also a possibility to be looked at – so
watch this space and I’ll give updates as I have them.
Meanwhile – and anyway, some or all the current
Zoom classes will connue for the foreseeable future.
If anyone would like to join a class and try tai chi by zoom, please contact me.

Hello everyone hope you are keeping safe and well. Many of our group
members tell me it’s their knitting & crocheting keeping them sane
during lockdown.
During this prolonged period of social distancing many of us
have managed to enjoy some social activity via fortnightly Knit and
Natter Zoom Meetings. This is an excellent opportunity for us
exchange ideas and share information to help us keep busy.
I have tried to ensure that all our current members are invited to
our meetings. So, if anyone is not receiving the notices please
contact me by the email address or phone number listed below.
Anyone wishing to join our happy friendly group and would also like to
meet online is also welcome to contact me :-

Out & About Hi All
I telephoned our bus company to see what they thought about bus trips in the
current climate . They had at that me received no guidance from their trade
associaon . They said on current rules that a 53 seater bus could only merit 18
people payload . If all the passengers were couples from the same household
maybe 34 people . I think as many of us are vulnerable with underlying health
issues we would probably struggle to get this many patrons ! This set of
circumstances (34) would put break even point to twice what it was before the
pandemic .I doubt the bus company would accept a booking as things stand at
the moment anyway. I therefore think that we should wait unl possibly there
is a vaccine or government advises us on a safety change !
Keep safe ……. Chris

Murder Mystery Book Group
The book for August's book group is
Heresy By S. J. Paris
Stephanie Merri$'s pseudonymous third novel opens as its
hero, the philosopher and memory expert Giordano Bruno, is
discovered reading Erasmus on the privy. Not such a crime,
you might think. But the year is 1576 and Bruno is a
Dominican friar at a monastery in Naples. Before you can say
"No one expects the Italian inquision", Bruno has dropped
the book into the cesspit, fled the building and become a
fugive from religious jusce – which is, of course, no jusce
at all.
Actually, these are true events. The historical Bruno ended up in Paris where he
secured the patronage of some of France's most powerful men, notably King Henry III.
In April 1583, he visited England for the first me. With his friend, the poet Philip
Sidney, he travelled to Oxford, where he hoped to find a teaching post. Alas, his
progressive views – he went beyond Copernicus in proposing an infinite universe
containing solar systems similar to our own – led to accusaons of heresy and
necromancy, and he emerged bruised from a public dispute with the rector of Lincoln
College, John Underhill.
The mee*ng will be on Monday 17th August via zoom at 2pm. Anyone wishing to join us is more than welcome. Just let me know and I'll
invite you for the virtual mee*ng.
All our meengs now take place in the luxury of your own home, tea and coffee as
required, good company and conversaon guaranteed.
If you would like to join us let me know. All welcome

Carriages Friday Coffee Morning to Resume!
While the Friday Coffee Morning has connued to meet weekly via Zoom,
we're excited to say that starng August 7th we will be meeng again, in
person(!), 10:30am at Carriages. The owner , Wendy, advises that social
distancing rules will be in place - liming two to a table and separang tables
by 2 metres. This is how she had it set up just before lockdown, and it worked
quite nicely.
Please let Julea Merlin know if you're interested in joining with us that
morning, as space might be limited. Contact Julea

Shielding paused
We are pausing naonal shielding guidance from 1 August as
average incidence rates across the country remain sufficiently
low. This will connue to be kept under close review. In areas
where incidence and transmission rates are increasing, we will
take a more targeted approach to shielding advice at local
authority level. Specific areas where local measures are in
place are currently Leicester, Luton and Blackburn with

Group BALLROOM GROUP
At the start of the year, would anyone have believed me if
I’d said you could learn those “Strictly” moves on Zoom?
Well, that’s exactly what some of our wonderful Members
have been doing. Let’s face it, there was no way that dance
teacher Mike was ever going to sit back and watch the dust
sele on his dance shoes. Even if it did mean he had to
resort to using a photographer’s tripod in place of his usual
partner (if you ask me, he’s grown a lile too aached to it!). So far, we’ve
covered basic waltz, cha-cha, rumba and even ballroom jive. All from the
comfort of our own homes. Obviously we’ve all got limited space, but that
hasn’t stopped us building up some prey respectable dance rounes so far.
We’ve given extremely careful consideraon as to how and when we may be
able to run the monthly Ballroom Group in the hall again. The well-being of our
Members must come first and foremost, and such is the nature of ballroom
dancing that we just don’t feel it’s possible to resume safely for the next few
months at least. With this in mind, Mike will connue to run the weekly Zoom
ballroom group each Wednesday at 10.30am.
If you fancy lots laughs & the chance to try something new, email me & we’ll
send you the link to the Zoom Ballroom Group. P.S. Bring your own coffee &
biscuits.

“LIVING HISTORY” GROUP
I am wring to you with some excing news, because even in these difficult
months through which we’ve been living, something posive has been
happening and we’ve formed a new group, “The Living History Group”.
For me, it really all began on my 12th
birthday, when I was given a diary. ANer
school, I’d rush home and scribble down the events and happenings of the day.
This connued and, rather like a laer-day Samuel Pepys, I’ve recorded
everything. From my first diary of 1965 through to the present day, every
single important event has been recorded between their pages, be it personal
or polical. When I’ve been bored to sobs during lockdown, I’ve taken them
out and re-read them and frankly, it’s been a fascinang experience. So much
has changed in those 50-plus years. It’s like reading a collecon of history
books.
In recent weeks, a few of us have chaed together (on Zoom), and realised
what a vast amount of experience we have amongst our Members. I’m not just
talking about whether they have been nuclear physicists or flown jet
aeroplanes or even worked for MI5! I’m talking about their “living”
experiences. Because as new, younger Members come into our U3A, they will
have no knowledge of some of the mes we have lived through.
For example, being born in 1953, although I know about the war, raoning etc
from the history books, I’ve no personal knowledge of it. Which is why I
thought how fascinang it would be if Members would like to join our new
Group and give us a brief history of “their” me. A sort of Members’
biography/meline if you like.
For example, did you use a dolly tub or a mangle? Do you remember your first
ever ride in a car? What are your recollecons of your first school/Sunday
school? Were you evacuated during the war? What was it like? What did you
do for entertainment when you were small? What was your first holiday? Did
you watch the first man walk on the moon? If you were not from this area
originally, how did you come to be here? And of course, your early memories of
joining the U3A too.
Whatever you feel you’d like to share, we’d love to read it and we are sure
other Members will too. Because what we’ve lived through shapes us and
makes us who we are.
Eventually, we’d like to record everything, so it’s available for future Members.
Literally, we’d become a “Living History” for future generaons of our U3A. For
the moment though, if you’re interested in joining the Group then just send a
bit about your recollecons. It doesn’t maer if you were a scienst or a
cinema usheree, we’d love to hear from you. Obviously, only include things
which you are happy about being in the public domain, for this will be wrien
by our Members for our Members to read.
When we’re all able to meet up again, you may wish to record a short video
with us, telling about your early memories. If you have any experience in se*ng
up a website then we’d be really pleased for your input because that’s a
learning curve for all of us. But for now, if you’re interest in joining this excing
new group, please email me, Maggie George (Group Leader) at
Circle Dance Group
The Group will not be resuming unl at least September (3rd Thursday). I
have let Coddington Community Centre know. Regards Audrey Blake
