We will serve the Lord! Deacon Joe Knapke, Ss. Simon & Jude Parish, West

Jefferson, OH

Today we hear Joshua ask the tribes of Israel which god they will serve. They had other options, for their neighbors wor-shipped other gods. We have other options as well. We could choose to serve wealth or status or power or pleasure. But we come here today, along with our families, our friends, our neighbors, as a sign of our com-mitment to serve the Lord, in his Real Pres-ence. Let’s recommit ourselves to serve God, to follow Christ on our journey through this life to the life promised to us in baptism, our Real Future. To read more about how we are growing together in the life of faith and discipleship in the Diocese of Columbus, visit www.RealPresenceRealFuture.org.

REFLECTIONS

JUST FOR KIDS

Gospel Meditation “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord for the service of other gods.” We struggle with our gods. They appear in the forms of things like money, power, prestige, popu-larity, privilege, and self-fulfillment. We like these “gods” because they make us feel good and ask very little of us in return. When we worship them, we wor-ship ourselves. How can you go wrong with that? We buy into the illusion that if something can give us a com-fortable life, free of want and need, then it is worth set-ting other things aside to pursue it. In essence, we sell our souls. Our struggle with “who is God” and to whom do we belong is a real one and one that can easily find us empty and experiencing disillusionment. The devil tempted Jesus in the desert and promised him more. We are promised “more.” But in pursuing the more and the satisfying we lose track of the cost, and the cost is great. We sacrifice our very life in pursuit of something disguised as life. We sacrifice truth for some-thing that only “feels” true. While the true and real God certainly promises us many things, many things are also required. It is not about the warm and secure feelings and self-absorption the world wants to provide, but of giving back. There can be no lukewarm stance with re-gard to faith. If we are in, then faith in Jesus Christ asks us to do some difficult things: work in service of God’s

Gospel Meditation Cont’d

kingdom (not our own), love our enemies, offer no re-sistance to injury, that we must die to ourselves in order to find ourselves, and trust that Jesus truly gives us his flesh and blood to eat and drink. These are hard things to accept and even harder to put into practice. It is no wonder that many, who may be attracted to Jesus at first, walk away in pursuit of the more self-satisfying gods. But truth is truth. If we cannot accept it from the lips of Jesus Christ, then where else will we find it? To whom can we go? There is only one source of truth and life, Jesus Christ. Jesus has the words of eternal life and if we do not go to him, then where else will we find this gift? But we must be faithful and buy into the whole package deal that requires sacrifice and fidelity. When we do, we find ourselves, through the Body and Blood of Christ, connected to the Source of all life and then intimately bound with our brothers and sisters. We all have to de-cide whether we want to stay or go and if we can accept what Jesus has to say. It’s a choice we all have to make.

Sharing the Gospel After Jesus compared himself to manna, and said that he was sent from heaven, many of his followers turned away from him. They just could not accept what Jesus was saying. It was too hard for them to understand. We have something they did not have. We have the Holy Spirit to help us. Sometimes what we learn might be hard for us to understand, too, but we never need to walk away. We can have faith in Jesus. We can ask him to help us.

Prayer Dear God, give me the faith to trust Jesus always. Amen.

COMMUNITY

Real Presence Real Future

Gathering on August 27 and 28 will bring together the faithful of the diocese for an opportunity to have an en-counter with Christ and one another. In faith, hope and charity, we rejoice in the real presence of Christ, and we rejoice in our relationship with the Lord. On Friday, August 27, we invite you to join us via livestream for a beautiful prayer service that will include a Eucharistic Procession, at St. Joseph Cathedral. On Saturday, August 28, join us on site at St. Charles Preparatory School, for confessions, praise and worship, Mass and inspiring talks by Bishop Brennan and Archbishop Perez. Christ promised to be with us always and it is fulfilled in his mystical presence among us and in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Jesus’ commission to the disciples is the same message for us, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…behold, I am with you always.” (Mt. 28:19-20). We are called to imitate Christ and the Apostles as mission-ary disciples and go forth and proclaim the Gospel. Let us come together in prayer and Eucharist, to prepare our hearts and minds, and renew our commitment to the Real Presence and Real Future. Please note: Friday’s event is by invitation only due to the Cathedral capacity, but you are encouraged to watch via the live stream. Online registration for Saturday closes end of business Friday, August 20th. https://realpresencerealfuture.org/

the signup process. 2) Visit StElizabethColumbus.Flocknote.com using your computer.

Parish Using Flocknote More! A year ago the parish rolled out Flocknote as a method to improve daily communication about parish activities. As we move to open up more post-pandemic activities in the coming months, we will be try-ing different approaches with Flocknote to determine the effective-ness of this tool. For example, Colleen, our secretary, is testing Flock-note to help sign-up Eucharistic Ministers and Servers for Aug 7 & 8. You can see it here: https://stelizabethcolumbus.flocknote.com/signup/62715. We may use it more as part of the fall ministry sched-ule.

In addition, Pam, our music director is looking for ways to use Flock-note in the future for music ministry. We are already using Flocknote for Saturday’s Notes from the Pastor, and internal meetings for Par-ish Council and the Knights of Columbus. It seems to have some ben-efits for those that use email and the internet regularly. But we will still maintain our conventional forms of communication in place.

So if you know of parishioners that are not signed up yet, please pass this link on to them. https://stelizabethcolumbus.flocknote.com/
