KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS In the musical Fiddler on the Roof the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their cov-enant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life to-day, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost.
The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint.
Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve.

MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS
It’s that time of year again when days start to shorten, vacation time is swiftly dissipating, and advertisers turn from marketing beach attire to school clothes. (Target is already selling Halloween material!) ’Tis the season when every man, woman and child’s thoughts inevitably turn to the same perennial question: “When does choir practice at St. Max start again?”
Haha- never thought you would ask that question? I encourage you to read on!
Before we continue, however, I want to give a hefty shout-out to our Youth Music Ensemble (YME). While the majority of our music ministry has enjoyed a lengthy vacation, these hardy teens have continued their weekly rehearsals and provided music for numerous St. Max liturgies (and the well-received Taize prayer services!) throughout the entire summer!
Now, for the rest of us….
At St. Max we have three main ensembles, designed to provide opportunities for people of all ages to contribute their musical talents to the liturgies and to our community at large. They are:
The Junior Choristers: elementary / early junior high school age children. They rehearse weekly on Wednesdays from 5-6PM, and sing a liturgy every three weeks.
YME: young adult choir (high school / college ages). These stalwarts will continue their weekly Tuesday practices from 5:30- 6:45PM, and typically sing twice a month at liturgies.
Adult Choir: everyone else. (I know better than to give an upper limit on the age range of this group!) This beloved St. Max institution rehearses on Wednesdays from 7-8:40PM and sings every week.
As previously noted, YME has been rehearsing throughout the summer and will continue to do so. The Junior Choristers and the Adult Choir begin their practices on Wednesday, August 26th.
I’m continually amazed by the ubiquitous talent we have in our music ministry, and how it is invariably paired with people of strong faith. Having said that, we are always looking for new members. No auditions are required. If you’re considering if you or your family members might be a good fit for our music program, just ask yourself two questions: “Does music speak to my heart and spirit?” and “Do I want to share the talents God has gifted me with my community in praising his name and bringing others closer to Him?”
The investment of your time in attending rehearsals and singing at the choir liturgies typically reaps many varied personal benefits: the sharing of faith, fellowship and fun with people who share your gift, the deepening of your prayer life, as the texts of the song we practice seep into your soul; the practical side of learning more about liturgy, music and singing.
