Mayor’s Message
On behalf of myself and The Council of The Village of Petitcodiac, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Westmorland County Fair.
Petitcodiac is a small community with a big heart located at the beginning of the Petitcodiac River. We are a vibrant community with a full range of services from health care to education, recreational facilities and a downtown retail area. From the quietness of the downtown park gazebo to the packed attendance at the Westmorland County Fair, to the screams of laughter in the outdoor pool, and the rivalry of hockey teams at the arena; the feeling of community surrounds you.
On behalf of myself and fellow councilors I would like to thank all of the volunteers and the many sponsors without whose support we would not have this wonderful annual event.
Whether you live here or are visiting, we welcome you and hope you enjoy our great community and the Westmorland County Agricultural Fair.
Mayor

Fair Born of One Man’s Dream
Many of those who, each year attend the Westmorland County Agricultural Fair do not realize that the events they enjoy are the culmination of the efforts of one man to organize an agricultural exhibition in Petitcodiac.
Bill Balzer arrived in Petitcodiac as a member of the Air Force in 1942, shortly after the war, settled in the community as a watch maker, jeweler and gift shop operator. He had come from the small town of Wellesley, Ontario where there had always been an agricultural fair. Prior to the war, there had been an exhibition in Petitcodiac, sponsored by the local agricultural society.
Bill often wondered why there couldn’t be a fair once again, and often discussed with members of his Kiwanis Club the possibility of establishing one. But the money never seemed to be available.
The Centennial Year of 1967 brought a spark of hope when Petitcodiac United Church Minister Rev. Harold Hilder, a Kiwanian and member of the local centennial committee, suggested to Bill Balzer that some money may be available from the village’s centennial grant.
This gave Bill the push to approach other local organizations and service groups.
Together they decided to hold a one-day Petitcodiac Community Fair in three weeks time. Over 40 businesses made contributions to help offset the cost of the fair. Money was also raised on the day of the fair through an auction of baked goods.
The one-day Petitcodiac Community Fair, as it was first known, chargedno admission until the third year. It was mainly an agricultural exhibit held
in September, with the queen pageant and the woodsman’s contest being two of the original events. Now known as the Westmorland County Agricultural Fair, it has been expanded and rescheduled to encompass the New Brunswick Day holiday weekend.
The modest fair founder had one concern about the fair’s switch to an earlier date. “The Fair was intended to be mainly an exhibition of farm, garden, and kitchen products and the incorporated as an agricultural fair, but few crops are ready the first week of August,” said Bill.
However, he was quick to say that he still supports the fair, and it is evident that he was proud of its growth from a one-day event in 1967 to its present week-long schedule. “We felt that if we could keep the fair going for three years, it would develop into a permanent event”, said Bill.
With the huge success of the Westmorland County Agricultural Fair, Bill Balzer had reason to be proud of his realization of his dream of an agricultural fair for the people of Petitcodiac.
