ABOUT: HOSTING COMPANIES
Divers Alert Network (DAN)DAN started as the National Diving Accident Network (DAN) in 1980 with the goal of establishing a 24-hour emergency hotline with access to physicians who were trained and experienced in the recognition, care, transportation, and recompression therapy of diving injuries. Within the first year alone, the idea proved so popular that a second, non-emergency line was created to handle the demand for medical and dive safety information.
In 1990, Divers Alert Network (DAN) became a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) dive safety organization. DAN’s mission is to help divers in need of medical emergency assistance and to promote dive safety through research, education, products, and services.
The DAN Emergency Hotline (+1.919.684.9111) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to assist with medical emergencies and to facilitate medical evacuation services. DAN also provides a Medical Information Line (+1.919.684.2948) during normal business hours for nonemergency questions.
To learn more about Divers Alert Network (DAN), please visit www.DAN.org.

The Science of Wound Care, Diving & Hyperbaric MedicineThis course is intended for a wide audience of health care providers involved in advanced wound care management, hyperbaric and undersea medicine, including the registered nurse, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, physical therapist, physician, physician’s assistant, certified hyperbaric technologist, certified hyperbaric registered nurse and others.
The primary purpose of this Wilderness Medicine Jointly Sponsored Symposium, “The Science of Wound Care, Diving & Hyperbaric Medicine”, is to educate learners in all disciplines on the standards of care in the treatment of wounds, information and technological advances in scientific and technical diving and the impact on medicine in the face of dwindling resources for complications as a result of diving, in-depth discussions of meaningful use and the electronic health record requirement, UHMS Accreditation requirements being implemented for payment of services, advanced wound care management and core anatomy, wound healing physiology, wound etiology and interventions, and clinical hyperbaric medicine. The second purpose of the program is to address the decreasing availability of emergent hyperbaric medicine programs to treat the core hyperbaric indications for which the effect of hyperoxygenation is primary in the treatment of the disease process. The third purpose of this symposium is to provide an understanding of quality, including tools like Lean to help the practitioner improve the care model; to look at the latest compliance issues and regulatory changes impacting pressure ulcers and organizational accountability.

Wilderness Medical Society (WMS)
Since 1983, when three young physicians conceived the idea for the Wilderness Medical Society, a great deal has been accomplished. Early leaders identified areas of interest that have since become pillars of the curriculum for wilderness medicine education, including CME programs, medical school rotations, outdoor programs and FAWM criteria (see below). In addition to the Society’s annual meeting, it also sponsors topic specific meetings (e.g. Winter Wilderness Medicine and Dive Medicine) and the quadrennial World Congress in Wilderness Medicine.
The written word has been a cornerstone of the WMS since its early history. Today’s publications include, Wilderness Medicine (WM) magazine, Wilderness & Environmental Medicine, the Society’s peer-reviewed journal, Wilderness Medical Society: Practice Guidelines for Emergency Care, and the WMS Educational Lecture Series. The commitment of the WMS to embrace academic excellence and to deliver innovative services to its members shines with the inception and creation of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. In one of the fastest growing segments of membership, Student Interest Groups, lies the hope for the future and sustaining the Society for years to come.
