Dear Parishioners,

This week St. Luke challenges us to consider this very important ques"on: “What is our treasure?” Let us truly challenge ourselves, pu%ng aside material possessions, and think about our faith, our families, and our friends as the true and the imperishable treasures in our lives.

The Church as a community of faith is also a treasure. The church as a building is a treasure for many where we experience closeness to God and each other. A&er 11 weeks of renova"on, I am proud to announce that our “exile” has ended. I hope you will find our renewed worship space to be the home which has always been here for you. I hope that this new configura"on will gather us ever closer as a community of faith. Let us remember in this renewed church how we experienced the joy of bap"sms and weddings, the nourishment from the Eucharist and the sadness of death as we supported those in mourning.

As your pastor, I feel proud and happy, and I hope you will be proud as well of the accomplishments we have achieved. I am very thankful to all who donated, and to those who are s"ll considering a dona"on to our church renova"on. May the living be blessed in their everyday life and the deceased rewarded with eternal happiness in heaven. Ewangelia Św. Łukasza w tym tygodniu wzywa nas do rozważenia bardzo ważnego pytania: „Co jest dla nas skarbem?” Pozwólmy rzucić samym sobie to wyzwanie. Odkładając na bok dobytek materialny, pomyślmy o naszej wierze, naszych rodzinach i naszych przyjaciołach jako o prawdziwych i niezniszczalnych skarbach w naszym życiu.

Kościół jako wspólnota wiary jest także skarbem. Kościół jako budynek jest skarbem dla wielu, gdzie doświadczamy bliskości Boga i siebie nawzajem. Po jedynastu tygodniach renowacji z dumą ogłaszam zakończenie naszego „wygnania”. Mam nadzieję, że ponownie znajdziecie nasz odnowiony kościół jako dom, który zawsze był i jest domem Bożym dla nas wszystkich. Mam nadzieję, że ta nowa konfiguracja zgromadzi nas jeszcze bliżej jako wspólnota wiary. Pamiętajmy w tym odnowionym kościele jak przeżywaliśmy radość z chrztów i ślubów, pokarm z Eucharys-i i smutek śmierci, gdy wspieraliśmy tych, którzy byli w żałobie.

Jako wasz proboszcz czuję się dumny i szczęśliwy, i mam nadzieję, że Wy również będziecie dumni z dokonanych osiągnięć. Serdecznie dziękuję wszystkim, którzy ofiarowali, i tym którzy nadal rozważają donacje na remont naszego kościoła. Niech żyjący będą błogosławieni w codziennym życiu, a zmarli nagrodzeni wiecznym szczęściem w niebie. Niech Bóg błogosławi parafię Św. Tomasza Becketa, szczególnie teraz gdy przekraczamy próg 50-lecia powstania naszego kościoła.

Solemnity of the Assump#on of the Blessed Virgin Mary On Thursday, August 15, we will celebrate the Feast of the Assump"on of the Blessed Virgin

Mary. This is a Holy Day of obliga"on. Masses will be celebrated: 9am in English & 7pm in Polish

Jesus is the first fruit of the resurrec"on as St. Paul writes in his le'er to the Corinthians. On the Feast of The Assump"on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we remember her being “harvested” into heaven. As this "me of year reflects the abundance of God and even now the fruits of the earth are slowly being harvested, we invite you to bring the bright flowers and fragrant herbs from your garden to be blessed at the Mass you a'end. In doing this, we hold onto the promise of resurrec"on and being gathered into God’s kingdom.

Jezus jest pierwszym owocem zmartwychwstania jak pisze Św. Paweł w liście do Koryn-an. W Święto Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryji Panny pamiętamy, że była Ona wzięta do nieba z ciałem.

Ta pora roku jest odbiciem obfitości Boga i teraz też, jako że powoli zbieramy owoce ziemi zachęcamy do przyniesienia kolorowych kwiatów i pachnących ziół do pobłogosławienia w czasie Mszy Św.

Czyniąc to jesteśmy włączeni w obietnicę zmartwychwstania i wzrastania w Królestwie Bożym.

RE Registra#on for 2019/2020 School Year At St Thomas Becket, we partner with St. Emily’s parish to provide a

comprehensive Religious Educa"on program for students in grades one through eight. Classes are on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:30 pm at St. Emily’s school. Our students receive their sacraments in our church.

Registra"on for school year 2019/2020 has already started and classes are being formed. The first mee"ng// class will be on Wednesday,

GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY—MARRIED IN 1969?

Couples celebra"ng their 50th wedding anniversary from across the Archdiocese of

Chicago are invited to gather together for the Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass that will be

celebrated by Cardinal Cupich on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 2:45pm. The Mass will

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE! It's Back to School "me, so please start shopping for a School Supply Drive sponsored by the St. Thomas Becket Women’s Guild. The drive will take place on the weekend of August 11th - you can drop off items at the parish office at any "me before then. We collect school supplies each year for our local elementary schools and Religious Educa"on program to distribute to children of families who have trouble affording the necessary supplies for the school year. The supplies will be distributed when the students come to register. Please place the items in the Bradle Box in the church lobby. Thank you in advance from all the Robert Frost and Euclid students you will be helping! Below is a list of needed items.

prepared. October 12th at 6:30 pm - Gala in the Manzo's Banquet hall. 50th Anniversary Grand Lottery: A voucher for a Punta Cana trip (or a destination of your choice) valued at $2,500

St. Thomas Becket parishioners donate throughout the year to the OPEN DOOR fund. These funds must be used to benefit the poor and the needy. In addi"on to helping the walk-in needy, we also sent dona"ons to

support the ministries of St. Emily’s St. Vincent DePaul ministry and St. Al’s Food Pantry program. Please know that your dona"ons are very much appreciated and are used to help the neediest in our neighborhood.

Ques#on: I've heard people say we should

"the a por"on of our income. Where does that idea come from?

Answer:

Giving generously to the needs of the Church and the poor is an

ancient idea, one that's been with us throughout Chris"an history

and within the Jewish tradi"on as well. In the Old Testament, the Mosaic Law required that one tenth of produce be offered to

God. Levi"cus and Deuteronomy describe offering one tenth of

harvested grains or fruit, one tenth of pressed wine and oil, and every tenth firstborn livestock. The origin

of the word ""the" is the Anglo-Saxon word for "tenth." These

offerings were given to the priests for sacrifice, sustenance, or further

distribu"on.

Jesus advises almsgiving, and Acts describes wealthier Chris"ans

contribu"ng funds in support of poorer members of the

community. We are all called to be good stewards of what we have received from God. This means

making room to give some things away. We all have necessary

expenses, which will vary in our different states of life. For some, giving 10% may be too high. For

others, much more than 10% could be offered. We should all assess

our finances and make sure offering to the work of God is a

priority in our budget.
