On the evening of August 18 th , we welcome in the month of Elul, the month leading up to the High Holy Days. These are days on which we are meant to begin thinking back over the past year and asking hard questions whose answers can help us make changes and improvements in the coming year. So allow me to share a few lessons learned from my one-pitch-long career that might provide guidance for the days ahead: 1. Even when we miss, our eyes are probably on the target. For the most part, our intent is notto sin or go astray. The Hebrew word for sin is Chet, an archery term that means to “miss the mark.” And we do miss the mark – our arrow flies to the right of its target, our pitch bounces before the catcher’s mitt, our actions cause pain or sadness to others. Judaism understands this inevitability of our humanity. But we mean to do the right thing, and the month of Elul gives us a chance to focus a little better – really stare into the catcher’s mitt – and try to hit our mark the next time. 2. Form does matter . You bet it does! The glove, the wind-up, the stretch… Could I have just casually tossed the ball across home plate? Sure. And how disappointed would you have been? I would have booed myself. It’s all part of the experience and transforms a simple game of catch into a pitch. In the same way, the rituals of the High Holy Days can transform apologies into atonement, and forgetting into forgiveness. So take advantage of all that awaits from Selichot through Simchat Torah, and embrace the entire experience. 3. Get yourself a cheering section. I cannot tell you how sorry I felt for the three fellow “pitchers” who threw opening pitches after me that night. If you watch the video on YouTube (thank you for posting, David Frederick!), there’s polite applause when each takes the mound. Yet, when I got up there – well, you blew me away. Some 120 tickets were sold through Brotherhood for that night, and I felt the effusive support of each and every one of you. That’s what we do for each other when we come together at temple for the High Holy Days. This congregation is your cheering section – we stand by one another to lend our strength and support for the challenging work these days demand. President’s Message

Dr. Gordan B. Stine – A man of great impact

It has been a number of months since the death of our beloved congregational Past President, but I have thought about him often. Though I knew that the time was near, the word of his passing still seemed surreal to me personally . Dr. Stine was an integral part of my youth. His death was a signal to me that the era of those who were the stalwarts of Charleston in my youth (the entire Charleston community and the Jewish community especially ) is quickly coming to a close. Gordan Stine was a rock. When I was a young child he was my dentist and was a gentle, caring man with a touch to match. My wife, Dolly , also grew up as one of his patients and always held him in great esteem and affection. His smile was legendary.

One of my lifelong close friends is Stev ie (Steven to many) Stine. We did all of our “young boy” things together from our earliest days through college. During the summers, even when we were working somewhere, we managed to water ski almost every day. We spent the night at each other’s houses frequently , often with Stev ie’s brother Robert and Stuart Meddin as well. When we were confirmed at KKBE (a very large class since Emanu-El teenagers joined us), Dr. Stine was the congregational president and did the presentations at our serv ice.

At graveside, I stood with Dr. James B. Edwards and his wife Ann. Jim is a former Governor of South Carolina, U.S. Secretary of Energy, and past President of the Medical University of South Carolina. He and Gordan Stine were the closest of friends and colleagues. From their dental practices to their stints at M.U.S.C., their personal and professional careers were entwined. As the Edwards and I stood together before the serv ice, and during a delay, we exchanged stories about Dr. Stine and the emotion I sensed from Jim and Ann spoke volumes about their relationship and the esteem in which Gordan was held throughout the community .

While words are very little consolation to the families who suffer the loss, the entire Stine-Berlinsky clan can be comforted a little by knowing that the memory of Gordan Stine will be cherished forever by so many whose lives he touched. May those memories serve as a blessing.

Shalom,

Dav id H. Jaffee KKBE President

Religious School Updates Amy I. W. Horner, M.A., Temple Educator

The start of a new academic year and the start of a new Jew ish year are both times to reflect on the past and make plans for an ev en better future. August in Charleston finds parents picking up school supplies and seeing which pairs of shoes need to be replaced before school starts. Summer assignments are checked, and teachers, parents and students make plans for a successful academic year.

During the month of Elul, w hich precedes the High Holy Day s and begins on August 19 this y ear, w e begin the process of reflecting on the old year and planning for the new y ear. We consider actions for w hich w e want to atone, and think about w hat we might do to become a better person. This period of renewal, w ith all of its traditions, is unique to Judaism and is in many ways a gift. It is a wonderful opportunity to start anew . Consider setting aside some quiet time for serious thought in late August, before the school y ear begins in earnest, and consider encouraging the y oung people in your life to do the same.

KKBE’s school calendar follow s the secular school y ear, and we begin our coming school y ear w ith Opening Day on August 26. Opening Day will be different from the Open House we have had in the past few years. Classes w ill be in session for all ages on August 26. Members of the Religious School Committee w ill be on hand to w elcome y ou and giv e directions. I thank them for joining us and helping to organize our day! The schedule:

9:00 a.m. Hebrew students with their parents attend Hebrew classes in their classrooms. This is a mandatory parent meeting, as teachers w ill be going over ex pectations and plans for the coming year. (If y ou have tw o Hebrew students, please hav e one parent/guardian attend each meeting; or, y ou may begin at y our y ounger child’s class and go to y our older child’s class at 9:20 for a repeat. Students should attend their own classes beginning at 9:00 a.m.) 9:45 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Pancakes in the Pearlstine Social Hall, hosted by the KKBE Brotherhood. Our “Brothers” have been flipping pancakes for us for sev eral years, and it is a delicious way to start our y ear! Notes on the time: Hebrew students w ill attend w ith their teachers and classmates and w ill join the breakfast at approx imately 10:00 a.m. Parents and guardians of Hebrew students are inv ited to meet their children in the Pearlstine Social Hall. Students who are not in Hebrew classes are invited to come for breakfast with their parents at 9:45 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Religious School is in session. Students in grades K-2 with their parents and teachers w ill attend a morning serv ice/assembly in the Sanctuary. Students in grades 3-9 w ill head to their classrooms. Parents of students in grades 3-9 are encouraged to meet their children’s teachers at the start of class, if they have not already met them. Parents of new students of any age are inv ited to attend our 10:30 a.m. assembly to hear additional school information, including dismissal directions. 12:30 p.m. Dismissal.

The Religious School faculty and I are looking forward to a wonderful new year, and we hope that you are, too!

Important Dates: Registration forms were due July 31. If y ou hav en’t sent y our form in y et, please do so ASAP. We need complete class lists prior to

Executive Director’s Message

GETTING READY

In July I took a vacation with my family-- three generations of us flying up the coast to gather for a family reunion on Cape Cod where my sister and her brood live. The question my children and grandchildren kept asking me before we departed was a surprise “what are you packing?” My philosophy of packing was honed when, as a consultant, I spent a great deal of my time on the road. “ Pack light” that's how I roll quite literally. Whether it's a month-long trip or a weekend jaunt, I put all I need in one red, rolling carry-on bag. I wear the tennis shoes I want, I don that fleece jacket (you know it will be cold on the plane anyway! ) -- Bulky items only take up room in my luggage. I bet in my small, red suitcase you'll find one pair of black pants, a few colored tops, a couple of T-shirts, one pair of sandals, maybe an extra dress jacket, and a pair of shorts. Throw in some underwear and one pair of socks and I’m good to go. One of my sons- in- law, on

the other hand, packs everything he can lay his hands on. When my Charleston clan hosted the Work family reunion in South Carolina he packed two giant, plastic tubs-- you know, the kind with the snapping lids--AND he packed a huge suitcase! Clearly, his packing philosophy is very different than mine. We prepare for what lies ahead in totally different ways. And don't we all?

High Holy Days is just around the corner and like packing for vacation, each of us will get ready for the New Year in our own way, some may spend time meditating, others of us may read, and still others might spend extra time studying the Torah. But the calendar is the same for us all. The Days of Awe are just a few weeks ahead. It is time for each of us to begin to unpack the year 5772 so we can make 5773 the best year ever.

Our Temple Youth CHARLEYCHARLEYCHARLEYCHARLEY

Welcome home to all our CHARLEY members who went to camp and Israel this summer. We're sure ev eryone had an amazing time.

But summer isn't over until RHINOFEST and Senior Send-Off. RHINOFEST, August 10th - 12th, is our annual musical Kallah, open to Jewish teens from all over the southeast. Although it isn't an official NFTY-SAR ev ent (and therefore teens can drive, with written permission) it's the unofficial summer kallah for the area. Our rising 8th graders are encouraged to attend, and our graduating seniors are also welcomed for one last event. Information can be found on the Facebook page for CHARLEY. This year we'll be focusing on song sessions instead of bands! There will be beach time as well as a scav enger hunt downtown.

At Senior Send-Off, Wednesday, August 15th, we say goodbye to our seniors as they go off into the world. This is also our Board installation event, when the old board gives the new board adv ice and gifts for the coming year. We are still making plans as of this writing, but we always have a great meal, and a lot of fun.

If y ou or your teen are not on Facebook, you can always contact Robin Shuler for details. (843-696-1926 or [email protected])

Francis Salvador Award Dinner. July 15, 2012 KKBE had its big fundraiser,

the

This year the award was presented to Senator Lindsey Graham. It was a delightful evening. Below are some of the messages shared at the dinner by noted dignitaries

who made the evening so special.

"Shalom,

It is my distinct pleasure to congratulate a true champion of the U.S.-Israel relationship, Senator Lindsey O.

Graham, on receiving the 2012 Francis Salvador Award from Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim in Charleston, South Carolina.

As the members of this landmark synagogue know well, the Jewish connection to Charleston is nearly as old as the city itself. For nearly 300 years, Jews in South Carolina have found prosperity and success, and a welcome

home for Jewish practice. Indeed, South Carolina was the first colony to elect a Jewish individual to public

office. His name was Francis Salvador, and it is his legacy we honor tonight. Francis Salvador was a trailblazer who exemplified patriotism, leadership, and integrity. At age 29, he died on the American battlefield, fighting for

the beloved country that had served as a fertile ground of opportunity for his family and him.

Senator Graham embodies the spirit of the award's namesake. He has distinguished himself as a leading voice in

the Senate on issues both domestic and international, and he has the unique distinction of being one of three

Senators to serve the United States in both military and civilian capacities. And last but not least, Senator Graham is a staunch supporter and believer in Israel, often on the front lines of championing the State of Israel's right to

exist , flourish, and defend herself.

As jewish American history is intimately bound to the history of South Carolina, Senator Graham understands in

his heart the deep and unshakeable ties between Israel and the United States. He knows well the mutual values

and common challenges shared by our two countries, and richly deserves the honor bestowed upon him tonight. On behalf of the State of Israel, mazel tov, my good friend, and may you go from strength to strength."

…..Dr. Michael B. Oren, Ambassador of Israel to the United States

...I am so pleased to be able to congratulate Senator Graham for being the 2012 recipient of the Francis Salvador Award. This award, as we all know, recognizes demonstrated vision and leadership, and in public

life in South Carolina, there is no finer example of vision and leadership than Senator Lindsey Graham and his service to our state and the United States Senate. Since he was elected in 2002, I have been so pleased to

work with him on behalf of the citizens of Charleston and all South Carolinians on a host of complicated and

important issues. Senator Graham has always demonstrated that he puts the needs and interests of South Carolina State Ports Authority and its strategic goals such as harbor deepening have been unwavering. He

has never failed to support our port and its important place in our city, region and state.

Just as important has been his service to our nation in its strategic goals. He has been a leader fighting for a

strong military and sensible policy, both at home and abroad, and I have been so pleased to be able to work

closely with him on so many different issues.

I congratulate Senator Graham on the Francis Salvador Award and the Beth Elohim Congregation for

selecting such a fine example of vision and leadership on behalf of our citizens.

… Joseph P. Riley, Jr., Mayor, City of Charleston

Page 8 ChaiLightsAugust 2012 • Av ~ Elul 5772

" ...I am most distressed that I will not be able to attend the Francis Salvador Dinner on July 15, honoring my friend, Lindsey Graham. My regret at not being able to attend is especially profound because of the great

admiration and respect I have for Senator Graham.

He became our United States Senator, succeeding the Honorable J. Strom Thurmond, in the General Election of 2002. Perhaps you remember who was the losing candidate in that election. Me, that 's who. I really hoped nobody

would remember that. But , for some reason, everybody seems to remember.

A couple of years after the election, T ime magazine quoted me as saying, "If I had known how Lindsey Graham was going to turn out, I might have voted for him myself."

I called Joe Klein, the reporter who wrote that for the magazine, and I asked, "Joe, are you sure I said that?"

"Of course you said it ," he replied. "In fact, I called Lindsey and told him what you said."

What did Senator Graham say?" I asked, a litt le apprehensively.

Joe Klein replied, "He asked me please not to put that in the magazine. But I put it in the magazine anyway."

I can readily understand why Senator Graham would not want his impeccable conservative c\credentials eroded by praise from a left-wing extremist like me. A conservative Republican would rather war a yarmulke to a pig-pickin'

than be found in the company of a liberal Democrat.

So let me set the record straight on what I meant. I did not mean to imply that I necessarily support Senator

Graham's politics or the policies he espouses. Rather, my admiration for him springs from something far more important.

As much, or more, than any contemporary public figure, Senator Graham exhibits three essential characteristics of a

leader. Those are: unquestioned integrity, steadfast devotion to duty and the raw courage of his convections. He is unfailingly honest in all his dealings, political and otherwise. He is always committed to what he is convinced is in

the national interest. He hides from no issue, however perilous. His courage is not only political - although that is

rare enough - while other members of Congress take breaks to rest and recuperate from the rigors of Washington, Lindsey Graham on those occasions dons the uniform of a member of the armed services and travels to the most

dangerous places on earth - notably Iraq and Afghanistan - where he voluntarily puts himself in harm's way.

In this latter regard, Lindsey Graham emulates the person in 3whose name we are gathered. Francis Salvador was an elected public official, and a delegate to the Colonial Congress - did you know that - when he voluntarily joined

the Revolutionary Army to fight for his country. "True to his ancient faith, he gave his life; For new hopes of

human ,liberty and understanding." These word appear on the monument erected in his memory.

I can think of nobody who better personifies Francis Salvador today than Lindsey Graham. He richly deserves the honor he is accorded tonight."

Sarah Ruth Stapleton August 18, 2012 At 10:00 AM

Sarah is an Honor Roll student in the seventh grade at Cario Middle School. She is a soprano in Cario’s award winning chorus. In addition to singing, she enjoys playing piano and tennis. Sarah is also an academic mentor.

Sarah’s love of animals has been nourished through her mitzvah project at the Charleston Animal Society, which, in conjunction with the West Ashley Optimist Club, recently distinguished her as their Youth Volunteer of the Year, recognizing her hard work, dedication and commitment to socializing the animals and helping to find their “ forever homes.” She has developed an excitement and involvement in her Bat Mitzvah preparation, and participation in KKBE’s community, which we look forward to sharing with you on her special day.

Thank you to the entire KKBE family for all of the love and support you gave to me and my family when Nancy passed away. So many of you have been so kind and thoughtful at this difficult time, just as we knew you would be. Nancy recognized, as I do, that having a congregation that will wrap you up in its arms and provide whatever help is needed is a wonderful thing. Thank you very much.
