GOVERNOR UPDATE

Glen A. Wilson High

School, Goldstone

Division President: Olivia Tang

Glen A. Wilson High School,

embodying our Major Emphasis,

LIVE2LEARN, went to Maryvale

Orphanage to read to and do

crafts with the children there. They

donated books with the help of

their Kiwanis club and gifted the

kids with colored pencils, their own

book, and candy.

Food-raiser

Hello Presidents!

As many of us are back in school, I

would just like to wish everyone a

great year! Don’t forget to prioritize

school, your family, and of course,

KIWIN’S.

This past month, I had the opportunity

attend the Kiwanis DCON with

Nicolette, Jade LTG, and Carolyn, K

Fam and Foundation Chair, to

represent KIWIN’S. President Kay-Kay

and some of the members from

Hercules even came up to

Sacramento to help out (pictured

above)!

Furthermore, as we move into the new

school year and as Fall Rally

approaches, I need all of you

presidents to be taking the time to

educate your members and about all

the exciting things that we have to

offer. Get to know your members and

give them the true ohana feeling.

Let’s have a great school year y’all!

Much Love.

NEW MONTHLY PRESIDENT CHALLENGE What’s the monthly challenge?

The monthly challenge is a way for the presidents to be pushing and

challenging themselves each month to be the best president possible. The

challenges will likely correlate with a theme every month i.e. October’s

challenge will center around trick-or-treat for Unicef (*Hint: order your boxes if

you haven’t done so already)

How can you participate?

1. Take a picture of you completing the challenge.

2. Post it on Facebook and Instagram. Write a brief caption about what you

learned from the challenge or how it helped you be a better president. Then

hashtag it with #{Insert month here}kiwinspresidentchallenge

3. I will look through all the posts and choose one president each month to win

a special prize. It will be chosen based on the quality of the picture and the

caption.

**Entries will be valid from the 1st of the month to the last day of the month

What’s this month’s challenge?

This month school is just starting, club rushes are happening, and a lot of new

members are joining. It can be really intimidating for new members, so this

month I challenge the presidents to greet the members at the door of your first

meeting. If you already had your first meeting then you can still do it at your

next meeting. If you will not have your first meeting by the end of Septembers,

then you can participate by greeting potential members during your club rush.

This month, hashtag your pictures with #septemberkiwinspresident challenge.

This month’s prize will be a Unicef drawstring bag and pen!

Things you need to do for

Others

1. Lead by Example

o Be professional! Don’t ever

use cuss words or derogatory

terms at an event or meeting,

and make sure your members

don’t either.

o Dress for the occasion.

o Make sure you address adults

respectfully in person and in

emails.

o Don’t ever ask anything of

members that you wouldn’t

be willing to do yourself.

o Know KIWIN’S like the back of

your hand, your members

shouldn’t have more

knowledge than you do.

o You are the icons of KIWIN’S

for your campus, start acting

like a servant leader otherwise

people wont respect you.

2. Make people feel

welcomed

o Do your best to make sure

your members knows you

care about them inside and

outside of KIWIN’S. .

o Find the line between being a

friend and a leader, you

should never be afraid to give

any member ‘consequences’

if they are acting out

o Never ever be “cliquey” with

your cabinet make sure all

your members feel

comfortable being around

you or talking to you, they

shouldn’t feel intimidated.

3. Remind people of their

purpose in KIWIN’S….or not

o Its easy to get caught up in

having a title, but remind

people and yourself daily

why you or them are in

KIWIN’S in the first place.

o If you keep in mind the real

purpose of KIWIN’S (service),

then everything will follow

o Please try your best to refrain

from interboard dating

4. Show you’re human

o You and I make mistakes

just like everyone else, and

it’s okay to do so. No one

expect you to be perfect. If

anything, it will make you

more relatable to members

o Never tell a member they

can’t know something just

because their a member.

Be as transparent as

possible.

5. Keep it drama free

o Yes, you are still in high

school, but guess what

you’re a servant leader too.

This means no DRAMA.

o Don’t bring your bad

attitude or negativity to a

meeting or an event EVER

because your members will

know and it’ll make them

uncomfortable.

o If you feel as if you cannot

control your emotions at all;

communicate with your

board so they can take

over.

How to be a leader: Part 2 Last month, I went over what you need to do for yourself and this moth will be going over

things you need to for others

Live2Learn

What is Live2Learn?

Realizing the need and

interest in supporting the

Major Emphasis Program

through hands on service, a

new service initiative will be

created on a two-year basis.

All of the hands on service

provided to children by Key

Club International members

can be directed to a single area

of need to make a substantial

impact. This service initiative

directs and focuses the

attention of KIWIN'S members to

serve children in a specific

hands-on approach.

What can we do?

KIWIN'S members currently focus

their time and talents on

Live2Learn, specifically focused

on 5-9 year old

youth, with the

main goals of

promoting

education and

building literary

skills. This program

not only creates

endless

possibilities to

strengthen the

common goal of

service, but also

allows each

community leader and lifelong

advocate for children's

education.

Pediatric Trauma

Program (PTP)

What is PTP?

Pediatric Trauma affects

children from infancy to age 18.

It is a result of motor vehicle

accidents, physical abuse,

drowning accidents, falls, and

animal bites, making it the

leading cause of death of

children in the United States.

Every year it results in sixteen

million emergency visits and

twenty thousand deaths. To

prevent these accidents and

injuries from happening, KIWIN'S

has focused on fighting Pediatric

Trauma through raising funds

PRESIDENT FEATURE OF THE MONTH

Olivia Tang

Glen A. Wilson Goldstone

Since this month out sponsoring Kiwanis club did not have many events going on, we tried to plan a service project for Saturday of the month but we ddn't plan one for the weekend of Kiwanis Dcon August 15. So far we have contacted our local Senior Center to see if there were any volunteer opportunities but we were informed that in order to volunteer we had to have the necessary medical clearance and proper volunteer training, so we were not able to proceed. We tried to plan a couple of projects for Live2Learn by contacting out local library and a nearby Orphanage. We also contacted our local library to see if we could go in and tutor children once school started, but they do not accept volunteers until September. We have also looked into volunteering for Maryvale Orphanage in Rosemead, where we would spend a day with the children and do activities such as arts and crafts, play games, and read to them. They just approved this event, so we will go in on August 29th at 10AM-12AM. We will be working with children from ages 6-10 and since the orphanage splits their children by gender, we will split into two groups to spend time with the children (these groups do not have to be gender specific). We have emailed our local Aktion Club to see when they start meeting again so we can go in and do a service project with them, but so far have not heard back yet. We planned a service project like the one we did in June where our members would go in and help repaint the vandalized and tarnished picnic tables at our local park. We will be repainting picnic tables for the park on August 8th from 8-11AM. We do not have anything for August 22nd because that is the date of the Region 13 beach clean up and we will most likely not have an advisor to supervise any events that we plan for that day.

This past month we have launched two merchandise fundraisers. Our first fundraiser was launched on July 21st, it was a KIWIN'S Lanyard fundraiser. Lanyards were black and gray with the KIWIN'S and Key Club logo as well as the KIWIN'S mission statement on them. Our club is selling them for $6 presale until October 25, and $7 after. We have created a Google Form for everyone who wants to order a lanyard: http://goo.gl/forms/cN8svJ94uR. We have filled in the merchandise form and sent in a picture for it to be featured in the District newsletter. The profit from this sale will go to PTP. On August 1st, we launched our KIWIN'S Crewneck fundraiser. We are ordering crewnecks based on the preorders we get. The preorder form is linked here: http://goo.gl/forms/T2zCTwdGIs. We are selling them for $22 preorder until October 25th, and $27 after that. The proceeds will be split between Eliminate and PTP. Our club treasurer had also scheduled a Panera fundraiser at our local Panera Bread for some time second semester and is working on other fundraising ideas. We are also looking into doing a fundraiser at school where we sell boba but we need to ask ASB if clubs are allowed to hold school fundraisers before club rush because we haven't has any ICC meetings yet and I know that clubs at our school are not allowed to hold club meetings until after club rush, which will probably be sometime in September.
