THIS ISSUE:INCREDIBLE ANNUAL APPEAL RESULTS TOUR DE FRANCE - CAP STYLE

DEBORAH’S STORY ROSS’ WORD

At CAP, we do more than simply

provide debt advice. We get to

know people personally to best

understand and address the

overwhelming pressure and fear

they are experiencing. We meet

them where they’re at, give them

the support they need and are the

first to cheer them across the ‘debt-

free’ finish line at the end of their

journey.

Sadly for many CAP Clients,

overwhelming financial pressure

often means their social life suffers

creating the further burden

of isolation.

So in May, the CAP Debt Centre in

Fairfield put together a social event

to bless CAP clients and their

families in the area. It was a time to

come together, share a meal and

experiences, make new friends and

be encouraged. Thirty-nine clients

attended the evening out which was

held at Fairfield Christian Family

church and organised by Steve, the

Fairfield Centre Manager.

‘It was a wonderful celebration!’

said Rhonda, the regional manager

for CAP’s Queensland centre, ‘We

celebrated four families becoming

debt free which was a huge

encouragement for the other

families that had just started the

journey! Being able to bless them

with a great night means so much.

It was just so exciting to see whole

families, couples and individuals

experiencing the love of Jesus for

the first time!’

Most importantly, the night was an

opportunity to share the love of

Jesus with clients. Nic, CAP’s

Evangelism Developer, shared her

amazing story of hope and gave an

opportunity for our clients

to respond.

Eleven clients made a decision to

follow Jesus on the night, right

there and then, with another

making that same decision at

church the next day.

INCREDIBLE ANNUAL APPEAL RESULTS

More Debt Centres can be opened More people can be

released from debt and poverty

More people can discover the love

and security of Christ

More staff and volunteers can

be trained

†More youth can be

financially educated

When CAP announced that we had

secured a match fund of $35,000

to double any donation received by

the end of the financial year on 30

June, we knew that 2014 was

shaping up to be a year of

incredible breakthrough.

But we were absolutely blown

away by the response from you,

our incredible supporters! Through

the appeal, we raised a staggering

$122,000 towards the work of CAP

enabling us to open six new CAP

Debt Centres by the end of June

and see hundreds more people

reached, including youth!

CAP Money for Youth was only

launched this year and we’re

excited about what this program

can do – helping young people

develop good financial habits

for life!

“When the donations started

coming in, we were staggered by

the generosity. We were especially

encouraged knowing that every

donation covered by the match

fund gift was doubled. This means

that more funds can go towards

opening Debt Centres and seeing

more lives reached with life

transforming solutions and the love

of Jesus.”

- Ross Buttenshaw,

Chief Executive

“Our first CAP Money Youth course

was amazing! They learned a lot

about income and expenditure.

Most of them had never seen how

to make a budget balance. The

feedback was amazing; they all

enjoyed it, it was great and a lot

of fun!”

- Lauri, CAP Money Coach,

Kingswood Centre

We’re already seeing a great

impact with young people already

engaging with the new CAP Money

Youth Course. Fantastic results!

DEBORAH’S STORY

Deborah (left) with her Centre Manager, Margaret

After her Dad passed away, huge

funeral costs left Deborah in debt.

Coping with the grief and with

mounting depression, life became

too much to handle.

‘I wouldn’t eat at all and my son

was getting worried. If I did eat, I’d

be sick. I tried to put on a brave

face for my son, but I was dragging

him down.’

Like many of the people struggling

with financial pressure, the

accompanying guilt and shame

left Deborah feeling completely

isolated.

‘I tried to work out who to talk to,

but I thought people would say it

was my own fault; that I got

myself into it and had to find a

way out.’

‘When Jim (CAP Centre

Manager) came, he said, “Deb, you

don’t have to worry anymore. It

will all be taken care of.” I felt so at

ease.’ With CAP to set up a

realistic budget, negotiate with

creditors and give her the support

she needed to stick to it, Deborah

was empowered to start her own

journey out of debt and into a

positive new future.

‘Since working with CAP life has

changed. It just gave me the

confidence in myself to know that

I could achieve things. I was given

a Bible; I wasn’t used to someone

doing that for me! It gave me a

warm glow inside as I started to

read it. I feel calm. When I pray to

God, things will work out.’

With the help of CAP and the care

of the local church, Deborah was

able to work her way out of her

situation, become and debt free

and can now look forward to a

future that is free from financial

worry and filled with the love

of God.

It was a day of sweat, tears - and

just a little bit of blood due to some

minor collisions with the bitumen.

As the sun rose over the Yorkshire

dales, CAP Australia’s CEO, Ross

Buttenshaw joined his counterparts

from the UK and New Zealand to

complete a gruelling 190km bike

ride in lead up to the Tour

de France.

Flying the flag for Christians

Against Poverty, the brave

riders raised awareness and

support for the organisation to see

the Church empowered to reach

hurting communities with the love

of Jesus.

“It was amazing to represent CAP

Australia, alongside the other

leaders of CAP from around the

world,” said Ross. “We are a truly

international ministry, changing

lives all over the world!”

The Founder and International

Director of CAP, John Kirkby,

also took part in the mammoth

challenge.

“We started this ministry 18 years

ago. I did this to say that I’m s still

doing what I can do, and to thank

all of our supporters for what they

do. They are making a massive

difference,” said John.

Dear Friend,

As we move into the second half

of 2014, it’s a great opportunity to

reflect on what we have achieved so

far this year.

The CAP team and I were

overwhelmed by the incredible

generosity shown in response to

our End of Financial Year Appeal.

It’s a huge encouragement to know

that we stand with such passionate

people, driven to see poverty

tackled through the hope provided

by the Church.

On behalf of every CAP client, thank

you for your donations.

Your support is driving incredible

growth. Six new CAP Debt Centres

opened in June - well on the way

to our target of seeing 50 Centres

operating nationwide by the end

of the year. As you know, we do

everything in partnership with local

churches, and our vision is to see a

CAP Debt Centre in every town and

city in Australia so that anybody

can access our services.

We’ve also expanded into exciting

new areas, including a development

of our amazing CAP Money Youth

Course. We know that financial

education can make a real

difference in the lives of young

people. And the response already

has been great! We look forward

to seeing hundreds more youth

educated to make good financial

decisions and become equipped for

the future.

Most importantly, we are reaching

people with the gospel. So far

in 2014, we’ve had the absolute

privilege of seeing 55 clients give

their lives to Jesus. Each time

someone makes a decision, we

know that ultimately it’s a decision

that will positively impact every

area of their life – not just

their finances.

It is the passion and drive of

everyone behind CAP’s vision to

serve the poor, reach the lost and

empower the church across this

nation, which has enabled us to see

such encouraging achievements so

far in 2014. Thank you.

P.S. Your giving and your prayers

are making a difference every day.

Thank you for your great support.
