The Chamber runs its fiscal year from July 1st to June 30th, so while we slow down in the summer, in regards to events, it is still an extremely busy time for the Chamber in different ways. Financials - My good friend the ole P&L statement. Maybe I missed the day in college or high school when they told us that your P&L statement will reflect and impact decisions you made 18 months ago, when creating the budget, all the way to decisions you are making now for 16 months from now.; but I’m pretty positive they should have spent more than a day on it. Such a lovely document, as long as it is in the black…. Which it again is! Strategic Plan - Who do we want to be, where do we want to go, what are our strengths; I wrote more about this in the last issue, however, I just wanted to reiterate my

appreciation of the Executive Committee, especially Kathy Klang, on creating this years Strategic Plan. While it is still in the works, once done and laminated (seriously), every staff person, board member, and key committee member will get a copy so everyone knows and keeps in mind our 4 or 5 specific goals for the year. Board Members - Our Directors on the Board commit to 3 years terms, 2 consecutively if they wish, to allow for consistency in strategizing, planning and execution. However, every June/July we have a handful of Directors that have fulfilled their commitments, and Directors that are just beginning their commitments. Our next newsletter issue will have bios and recognition for all of them, but please join us at our annual meeting on August 16th as we thank the outgoing and welcome in the new Directors. It is a fun event and we always have a fun gift for the outgoing members. Come and get a first peek! Staff – We’re a small group, but a team is a team regardless of 2 people or 2,000 people. This time allows us to regroup, discuss, plan, correct, adjust and adapt. We have added a 4th person, ambassador extraordinaire Ann Aubitz. While a member, Ann is willing to spend some of her free time out promoting the chamber to potential members and helping grow the Chamber’s overall membership.

Top Ten Reasons to do business in MSP 1. A robust, diverse economy. The 13-county Minneapolis Saint Paul region supports one of top-performing economies in the world, says The Brookings Institution. The Greater MSP region draws its strength from a remarkably diverse business base and an economy that is “knowledge-based, globalized, entrepreneurial, IT-driven and innovation-based,” says Forbes. The Greater MSP region is home to 20 Fortune 500 public companies and eight of Forbes’ largest private firms. 2. A highly educated, productive workforce. Minneapolis Saint Paul consistently ranks as one of the best-educated, most dedicated workforces in the country. The Daily Beast calls the Greater MSP region “one of America’s top brainpower cities,” based on its intellectual environment and percentage of residents with college degrees. The Business Journals hails it as “a national brain trust,” thanks to its concentration of young, college-educated workers. Nearly four in ten Twin Cities adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher, making Minneapolis Saint Paul the sixth most educated region in the country, according to the US Census. The state’s legendary work ethic – a product of its hardscrabble, pioneer roots – contributes to one of the lowest workplace absenteeism rates in the country. 3. A legacy of business innovation. From Post-It Notes to pacemakers, the Minneapolis Saint Paul region has given birth to hundreds of life-saving and life-enhancing inventions. Retail giants Target and Best Buy started from scratch in Minneapolis Saint Paul, as did medical technology pioneer Medtronic. 3M, General Mills and Ecolab routinely rank among the most innovative companies in the world. 4. A growing population and labor force. The 13-county Minneapolis Saint Paul region is home to more than 3.3 million people and a labor force that’s 1.8 million strong. Workforce growth is expected to outpace population growth in the next decade. 5. Easy access to regional, national and global markets. Minneapolis Saint Paul is a major transportation hub. Businesses can reach either coast in a few hours, thanks to the Greater MSP region's central location and top-ranked MSP International Airport, which offers non-stop flights to 114 US cities and 21 international markets. Heading south to Mexico, I-35 intersects the mid-point of the east-west US interstate system. Going north, it connects to the Port of Duluth – a Great Lakesport serving ocean-going ships. I-94 traverses the US, connecting companies to either coast within three days. The Mississippi River supports three Twin Cities ports and serves as a vital transportation artery for hauling coal, grain and other products to the Gulf of Mexico. Four Class 1 railroads and intermodal terminals connect MSP to global markets. 6. Central time zone. Being based in the Central Time Zone in the US literally adds hours to work day. Greater MSP companies can reach East Coast customers and vendors an hour before the normal work day, and West Coast contacts two hours after the close of the business day. 7. Reliable, affordable utilities. Utility prices in the Minneapolis Saint Paul region are significantly lower than the national average for most customer classes. Multiple providers deliver highly reliable electricity, gas, water and telecommunications services to businesses in the region. Leading providers include Xcel Energy, CenterPoint Energy, and Great River Energy and its network of electric cooperatives. 8. Easy to do business. Business, government and civic leaders across 13 counties work collectively to make the Greater MSP region an easy place for businesses to locate, start and grow businesses. Greater MSP helps businesses access the information, resources and connections they need to establish and grow a business. 9. Exceptional quality of life. Countless national rankings place Minneapolis Saint Paul at or near the top for “best places to live well in America.” Entertainment, arts and recreational opportunities abound. The cost of living is low, and the post-recession job market is stronger than most of the US. The region is hailed as one of the most creative, active, healthy, literate, green, clean, family-friendly, cool, livable communities in the country. That’s great news for businesses needing to recruit or retain top talent. 10. A hot market for small businesses. The Greater MSP region is the 12th best market in the US for small business creation and growth, says the Business Journal. It’s especially strong in start-up funding for healthcare and life-sciences businesses. The region claims one of the highest concentrations of small businesses in America.
