Opportunities to Build Relationships and Understanding

MONDAY MORNING MOCHA: Every Monday at 9, I will be hosting a small group in the church Parlor during which we will have a devotional, share God sightings, and chat about life. This group has no long-term commitment; come one week or come every week, it’s up to you!

PIZZA WITH THE PASTOR: In addition to loving coffee, I also love pizza. Starting on August 25th, I invite you to join me for pizza on the last Sunday of the month at Frank’s Pizza in Wayne Heights from 5:30 – 7 PM. Bring your questions about: theology; Christianity; the U.M.C.; me; life; etc.; but you can leave your money at home … the pizza is on me.

BIBLE 101: Are you new to faith? Are you interested in reading the Bible but aren’t sure how to go about it? Join me for Bible 101 where I will share my thoughts on the basics of the Bible: how did it come about; who were the authors; why different translations? This will be a five or six week (approximately) study taking place during the Sunday school hour beginning on September 8th. Where we will meet will depend on how many are interested in attending, so please let me know if you want to come so I can ensure enough space and handouts.

COVENANT BIBLE STUDY: The idea of “covenant” permeates the Bible from beginning to end, sometimes in ways we don’t see. “Covenant” is an in-depth group Bible study in which participants read and discuss the Bible together, learning how to love God—and each other—better. Three 8-episode segments each explore a different aspect of Covenant life. Each will examine what Covenant means, and the progression of a Covenant relationship with God. This study will take place on Sunday evenings beginning on September 8th

(except the last Sunday of the month) from 6 – 7:30 and might take a one or two week break between each eight week study. By the end of the twenty-four sessions, you will have read and discussed the entire Bible.

Pastor’s Column

“The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your land, your family, and your father’s household for the land that I will show you… Abram left just as the Lord told him.” – Genesis 12:1, 4a (CEB)

Sisters and brothers, Sue and I are so excited to be with you here at Christ U.M.C. in Waynesboro, and your welcome to us has been wonderful and loving. Thank you for your grace and your embodiment of the love of God. Thank you in advance for your forgiveness for any missteps we might make as we get used to the context of this new community of faith; that is one of the greatest challenges of the itinerant system of the U.M.C.: leaving the known for the unknown.

The story of Abram’s call by God is revered by three of the world’s “great” religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. And why wouldn’t it be? What a statement of trust and obedience. God said, “Hey Abram! You’ve been where you are long enough, I want you to go somewhere else,” to which Abram replied, “My camels will leave in the morning.” How many of us are willing to do the same thing either literally or metaphorically?

Leaving where we are and going someplace new is something God still asks of us, and although it does sometimes mean packing up your camels and moving to a new community, it more often means leaving behind the familiar long-used methods and ideas of ministry in order to reach the lost and lonely of a new time and place. This can be a challenge. Anytime we are asked to step outside of our comfort zone, anytime we are asked to try something “new,” we might with knee-jerk precision reply, “That’s not how we do things, here” or “We’ve never done it that way before,” when the answer God wants to hear is, “My camels will leave in the morning.”

I believe God is asking us to “leave our land (etc)” where we feel safe, secure, and comfortable and try something new. Join me over the coming weeks, months, and years, in listening for God’s call and discerning where God wants us to go next.

Currently I hear God calling me/us to build relationships and understanding. To that end, I have four things I want to tell you about:

MONDAY MORNING MOCHA

PIZZA WITH THE PASTOR

BIBLE 101

COVENANT BIBLE STUDY

(see Page 1 of newsletter for details about these four things)

Sisters and brothers, as we begin our journey together, I just want you to know that I am praying for each of you to hear God’s call in your life, a call inviting you ever deeper into relationship with God and others.

God’s peace,

Pastor Brian (aka: PB)

Thank You, Fred Davison

Dear sisters and brothers, having served in the music ministry for the past several years, Fred Davison has made the difficult decision to end our partnership effective July 31st. We thank Fred for his time with us and the way he helped our music ministry grow and assist in worship.

We pray for God's blessings upon him as he continues to use his gifts by assisting a different congregation in worshipping God and in reaching new disciples for Jesus Christ.

When you see Fred, please thank him and extend your best wishes as well.

The SPRC has moved to hire Dan Deatrich as Interim Choir Director and a search for a permanent replacement has begun.

Food and Friends: A Free Community Meal

Food and Friends will be starting back up in September so watch for the announcement in the bulletin. We are hoping to secure a few more lead cooks this season. Lead Cook does not mean you have to do the cooking by yourself, it just means you select the menu and let those that come in early know what they need to do to help with the meal. If you would be willing to be a lead cook in the next season please call Carole Hunt at 717-331-9653 or email [email protected].

Fundraiser: We raised $6,585 for the 2019 Faith Build! Thank you for your generosity in the fulfillment of our

pledge to support the project financially. Habitat was thrilled with our donation.

Build Date: Saturday, August 10 (8AM – 2PM): We are looking for 10-15 people to join the CUMC work team to paint (inside). The air conditioning is supposed to be installed this weekend, so it should not be unbearably hot to paint. LAY MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT: Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry began in November, 2006. The inspiration for this ministry began

when Mary Fry's sister, Helen, received a prayer shawl during her battle with cancer.

Helen was moved by this beautiful gesture of love and caring. Then Mary did a spiritual gifts

assessment and decided she could use her talent for knitting as a source of blessing.

Shawls have been presented not only to members of C.U.M.C, but extended family and friends, neighbors, co-workers, and

hospice patients. Shawls have brought comfort to the sick, in hospital, those recovering from surgery, bed rest before

delivery, bereavement; love and support in difficult times and in time of transition or stress; love and blessings on birth and

marriage. Shawls come in a variety of styles (for both male and female) from lap style, shoulder style and shawls for infants

and children. A label is sewn into each shawl, and a hand-written note is attached.

When one of our Prayer Shawl Ministry members begins the shawl, she begins with prayers and blessings for the future

recipient of the completed shawl. The intentions are continued throughout the knitting. Upon completion, a final blessing is

offered by the group before the shawl is sent on its way.

Since the ministry began, over 400 shawls have been given. The breadth of this prayer shawl ministry has touched people

living in the states and even in Uruguay and Russia. A few recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and

passing it onto someone in need. Thus, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling

the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, loving God!

This ministry is open to anyone with willing hands. You don’t have to be a member of Christ Church. You don’t even have to

know how to knit or crochet! They will show you how.

If you know of anyone who needs the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl, call or email the church office and we will

make arrangements to get one to you. Again, you or the recipient need not be a member of our congregation. God's love

and comfort is for all.

Knit 3, purl 3, knit 3, purl 3 — a simple pattern — a way to care. They knit, pray, and spread God's love the Second Tuesday

of every month at 10:00 AM in the Parlor …. You are welcome to join them.

Cindy Hartman, Lay Leader

Susannah’s Pantry

People come to Christ Church seeking immediate food help each week. You can help by donating canned and dry foods that can easily be stored and kept in Susannah’s Pantry. It is amazing to see how God touches people to fill the pantry and amazing to see how many this little cupboard helps!

Some non-perishable (no refrigeration required) items that we NEED are: Canned Fruits, Cereals, Jelly, and Canned Vegetables.

We also have requests for personal care items (toilet paper, shampoo, soap, razors, etc) – donations of personal care items are appreciated.

Thank you for all your donations to Susannah’s Pantry! With your help, many people have received much needed food. Thank you for helping to feed others in the love of Christ!

Think Green Christ Church has recycling programs to help the environment. We want and need your help. Don’t throw those old batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, pull-tabs, or metal items in the trash. Bring them to the church so they can be kept out of landfills and recycled.

Metal Recycling: We can recycle anything made of metal or with metal in it - any appliance large or small, anything run electrically or with batteries. We do not take TV’s, computer monitors (computers are ok), tires and stuffed furniture.

Updates (April 2010 - July 14, 2019) Total Pounds of Metal Recycled: 1,039,962 Current Balance in Recycling Fund: $ 51,296.22 Total Amount Earned from Recycling: $ 109,529.74

Aluminum Cans Pull-Tabs: A pull-tabs recycle tub is in the narthex to Frank Hall next to all the other recycle tubs. When we collect enough tabs, we will make another delivery to the Ronald McDonald House.

Batteries: A battery recycle tub is by the narthex to Frank Hall – household batteries of all kinds – even hearing aid batteries can be deposited there. They will then be taken for recycling.

Empty Ink-jet Cartridges: Most inkjet cartridges can be recycled. Please place the your empty cartridges (in its original box or in a plastic bag to keep it safe from spills and damages) in the jar in the Frank Hall.

Church Council Updates New is the word.

1. Boiler has been ordered and will be in place before cold weather.

2. Christ UMC will be at Market Days. Colleen has secured a spot for the Crafters.

3. Evangelism committee will soon be established by Pastor Brian.

4. Music director, Christian education director, and youth director are currently open positions.

5. Trustees are examining bids for the parking lot. The recyclable disciples would love to pay for the paving of the parking lot but currently their funds won't cover it. (Let's help them to reach it!)

6. At each meeting, we update the calendar. It was requested that these calendar events be added to our Facebook and web page.

7. Irene suggested a "Cooking for Crowds" Workshop given by Penn State Extension would be beneficial for helpers of Family and Friends. After discovering registration was closed, Sheryl Melville volunteered to get the information to Carole Hunt and that they would pursue hosting our own workshop.

8. Cindy has lots of new opportunities to put our faith to work with missions.

9. We voted unanimously to award the Wynkoops a $2,500 scholarship, given with love and support from our church family.

10. We received a lovely thank you note from Pastor Tom and Bonnie, which you may view on the working office bulletin board. The secretary's minutes will also be placed there for your perusal.

Please ask any council members for more details, questions, or feedback. Let's hear it for "practical Christianity"!

Devin Wynkoop is a member of the Waynesboro Carl Ripken Jr baseball team. His team is competing in the World series event in Visalia, California. Devin's cost is paid for by the organization but not the parents. The Church Council approved a payment of $2,500 from the Scholarship Fund to help with some of Brain's cost to attend. On Sunday July 28, 2019, there will be a special offering to help replenish the Scholarship Fund. This is a great example of this faith community reaching out to help a youth and his family.

To the members of Christ United Methodist Church,

For the past three years, it was my distinct pleasure to serve as Choir Director at CUMC. Although, I was looking forward to partnering with Pastor Brian, I felt compelled to accept a call to serve as the Director of Music Ministries at Greencastle Presbyterian Church. Members of my family have worshiped in this congregation since 1754 and the church has been without music leadership for over a year.

I thank all of you for having been so welcoming to me and for affirming my work directing the Chancel and Bell Choirs. It was indeed a privilege to serve this congregation. I am grateful for all I have gained from our time together and I value the relationships formed.

Blessings, Dr. J. Frederick Davison

Deep appreciation for the many people who helped in a wide variety of ways with The Towne Singers Concert. The group is always grateful for refreshments and a time of fellowship.

Sincerely, Cindy Gettins

This years joint VBS was a great success! Thanks to the UMC men and women who helped prepare and serve the Monday meal. Thanks to the George Souders II family for helping to decorate. Thanks to Cindy Hartman, Marilyn Jarrell, Bob Davis, and Tosha Hind, Pastor Brian, Pat & Bill Short for spending their evenings helping with VBS. The average attendance was seventy per night. The majority came from our community not the churches involved. Without the help of the other two churches none of the congregations could have accomplished being in mission to so many children. Thanks again to all the members of this congregation who helped.

Pastor Dave

Job Openings We currently have a couple of job openings for which we are taking applications: Christian Education Coordinator, Youth Director, and Choir Director. If you are interested in any of these positions (or know someone who might be), please speak to Pastor Brian or Donna Brandmeyer for more information.

Where has the summer gone? From the time the School Age children finish the school year we have approximately 10 weeks of summer to occupy all of the children. A lot of planning is made in respects to transportation, packed lunches, water play ratios, water clothing/shoes for the creek, sunscreen, family and staff’s vacations, surviving the heat safely, and finally the cost are taken into consideration. All of these pieces of the puzzle are put together to keep children, parents and staff happy. We continued to keep our two school age groups divided for the summer. The Younger School Age classroom occupies our soon to be Kindergarteners up to our first graders. The Older School Age classroom located in the Wilson classroom is where our soon to be second graders up to fifth graders spend their time while at the Ark. Both age groups have been quite busy this summer. Both School Age groups have had opportunities to visit such places as: Alexander Hamilton Library for the Summer Reading Program and activities , Antietam Humane Societies’ Shelter Buddies Reading Program where they have read to the animals, Funcastle for mini golf, Renfrew Park for a stream study and nature walk, Sunshine Lanes Bowling, Hagerstown Discovery Center & City Park, Crystal Grottoes Caverns offered a very educational and cool visit, Cunningham Falls to enjoy the lake, hike and picnic, showed some of their creativity for a Painters Workshop to create their own master pieces, roller skating at Red Bridge Roller Rink, visiting the theater for a movie, regular weekly visits to Northside pool and every local park along with the shade it offers has been attended once if not more. Just typing the collection of our trips helps me to recall why our summer has flown by so fast, but also reminds me of every comment made by the children, “Ms. Amy and Ms. Keri, we had so much fun!”

Please feel free to join us for our end of summer celebration that will be held at Noah’s Arks front play yard. It will consist of an opportunity for some fun and fellowship with the families that Noah’s supports and cares for with your blessing. Amy

Greeters: Everyone who comes through the doors on Sunday morning is met with a smile and a bulletin. Our greeters are the first "face" Christ Church’s guests see and they are our hand of welcome. If you would like to be a greeter at our 10:45 AM service, please contact Normajean Boyd at 717-655-5574.

2019 Altar Flowers Chart is posted on the bulletin board in the Second Street entrance to Frank Hall. Sponsoring the altar flowers is a beautiful way to give thanks to God for someone in your life, past or present. We will acknowledge these honorariums and remembrances in the Sunday bulletin. If you would like to present flowers in honor of or in memory of a loved one, please check the chart to see what dates are available, then write your info on the chart. Then, contact the florist of your choice to order the flowers. …. New to sponsoring flowers at CUMC: Beside the chart, there is a yellow “How to” guide sheet for sponsoring flowers to help you with the process.
