32 Rue du Chateau, Auray Southern Brittany
where we are
A short two to three hour drive from St Malo, the old town of Auray
lies on the southern coast of Brittany. The area is noted for its delightful
sheltered coastline with dozens of small harbours and pretty off
shore islands.
Southern Brittany’s road network is easy to get around, making it ideal
for either short trips or longer days out to explore. Whether active
pursuits, browsing round the traditional markets or simply lazing on the
beaches are your interests, Auray, and the surrounding holiday area will
not fail to please!
The local coastline offers wide sandy beaches as well as many sailing
pursuits. Carnac, with its superb beaches and famous ‘menhirs’ – ancient
ritual stones – is the French equivalent to Stonehenge. Trinite sur Mer
boasts an extensive and beautiful sailing marina and the nearby Quiberon
peninsula provides opportunities for horse riding, water skiing and
sea fishing.

ABOUT THE GîTE32 Rue de Chateau is a pretty stone built town house dating from 1660. It nestles in the mediaeval cobbled street leading down from Auray’s traditional marketplace to the ancient port of St Goustan.
This is where Benjamin Franklin sailed to when enlisting the help of the French during the American War of Independence, and the port has been at the forefront of Brittany’s naval history since the beginning of the 17th Century.
Rue de Chateau is a delightfully picturesque pedestrianised street containing many galleries, artisan studios and houses. The street connects the town centre and the port, which are both a five minute walk from the gite. Access immediately outside the gite is available for loading and unloading only, with parking available a few minutes walk away in the town centre.
The house is privately owned and has been used as a family holiday home for many years. Comfortably sleeping 4-6 (although 8 can be accommodated), it has been very tastefully modernised to a high standard, whilst at the same time retaining its historic charm.
