வணக்கம்! Greetings!

Last four months feel like four years. The achievements from ATS volunteers during this period are numerous. We launched our brand new website based on Wordpress. It is loaded with functionalities includ-ing a contemporary interface, membership management, events management, payment process-ing etc. Special thanks to the architect Jey Iyempandi and Kavya Jey for all their hardwork in mak-ing it happen. Jey is the CEO of the popular indusladies.com which draws 16 million users a month and that background has tremendously helped shape up our website. We introduced ATS Membership to gain mindshare and to improve our services. Our member base has steadily been growing ever since. Thanks to Saravana Bavan for defining and driving the membership program. We formed an Advisory Board with notable people from various backgrounds to guide our jour-ney. The ATS Advisory Board includes distinguished individuals such as Mr. Sam Kumar, Entrepre-neur (JG Development group), Mrs. Vinitha Subramanian, Director of Natyalaya, Dr. Singara Vadivel, Tamil Writer, Mr, Gangeyan Kanthasamy, Social Worker, and Dr. Satish Thirumalai, Den-tist. We welcome everyone of them and looking forward to nurturing ATS under their leadership and guidance. A few volunteers have stepped up to join the newly formed Board of Directors and we welcome them to the team. Vijay Balasundaram will be focusing on cultural programs to bring the best to our community. Saravana Bavan will be managing the membership program. Arul Nambi will be responsible for a key area, sponsor relations. A Karthik will be looking after the web and content committee. Congratulations and thanks to the new Board of Directors. We had a very successful Pongal vizha event which was colorful and entertaining. It displayed tal-ents from local community and as far as San Antonio and included scrumptious pongal themed food. Executing an event of this scale is not easy and wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts from several volunteers. There are too many to name but let me mention a few who went the extra mile. Shankar, Arul Nambi and team spent days planning, procuring, and serv-ing food and carried out a flawless effort. Saravana Bavan , Varun, and Ashok manned the ticket-ing and membership booths along with Lakshmi, Aashna, and Meghna. MCs Krishna, Aarthi, and Madhini did a fantastic job. Suguna, Mohan, Hari, and Manju handled the backstage with utmost efficiency. A Karthik was instrumental in handling participant registrations. The sound and lighting were the most complicated and time consuming operations of the event. Bala, Anil, and Senthil very patiently and professionally managed it. Shanmugam watched the whole event with one eye through the lens of his camera so that everyone can enjoy the pictures. Suganthi, Suguna, Akila, and Priya spent days on stage decoration which turned out to be one of the best we have seen. As always, PG Ram and his family were around helping us until we locked the doors. Thanks to all volunteers for their support and dedication. It’s volunteers like these that make the big differ-ence. ATS ச ொங்கல் சகொண்டொட்டம் ஆஸ்டின் தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தின் வபோங்கல் வகோண்டோட்டம் ஜனவரி மோதம் 31-ஆம்

பததி ஆஸ்டினில் உள்ள பைனியர் பமல்நிரைப் பள்ளியில் மிகவும் பகோைோகைமோக வகோண்டோடப்பட்டது.

இந்த நிகழ்ச்சிரய நம் ஆஸ்டின் தமிழ் பள்ளி மோணவர்கள் தமிழ்த்தோய் வோழ்த்து போடி துவங்கி ரவத்தோர்கள். முதைோவதோக ஆஸ்டின் தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தின் வசயைோளர் திருமதி. சுகந்தி பகோவிந்த் வைபவற்புரையோற்றினோர். தமிைர் திருநோளோம் வபோங்கல் விைோரவ வபருரமப்படுத்தும் விதமோக கண்களுக்கும் கோதுகளுக்கும் இனிரம தரும் வரகயில் பல்பவறு கரைநிகழ்ச்சிகள் இடம் வபற்றன.

சிறுமியர்களின் பைதநோட்டியம், குைந்ரதகளின் நடனம், போட்டு, கீபபோர்டு வோசித்தல் மற்றும் ஆஸ்டின் தமிழ் பள்ளி மோணவர்களின் தமிழ்போைம்பரிய நடனமோன கும்மி பபோன்ற பல்சுரவ கரை நிகழ்ச்சிகள் போர்ப்பவர்கரள

மகிழ்வித்தது. வைக்ஷிதோ நிருத்தியோையோ நடன பள்ளியின், உரிரமயோளர் திருமதி. பவித்ைோ

ைோமதோஸ் மற்றும் மோணவர்கள் கைந்து வகோண்ட போைதியோர் போடல்கள் உள்ளடங்கிய பைத நோட்டியமோன “கோவடி சிந்து”, நம்ரம முருகனின் திருக்பகோவில் அரமந்துள்ள பைநி-க்பக வகோண்டு வசன்று சுவோமிரய தரிசித்த திருப்திரய அளித்தது. யுவதிகளின் அபிநயபோவகம், கண்ரணயும் கருத்ரதயும் கவரும் கைண நிரைகள் நடனத்திற்கு பமலும் அைகு பசர்த்தது.

நிகழ்ச்சியில் அக்னி நடன பள்ளியின் ”Flash Mob” மற்றும் சோன் ஆண்டனிபயோ தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தின் சோர்பில், நம் தமிைர்களின் நோட்டுப்புற கரைகளோன கைகோட்டம், வபோய்க்கோல் குதிரை, மயிைோட்டம், புைியோட்டம், கும்மி, ஒயிைோட்டம் பபோன்ற தமிைர் மைபின் சிறப்புற்ற, ஆடல்கரை வடிவங்கரளயும், அைகியரையும், கரைநுட்பத்ரதயும் மிக அற்புதமோக வவளிப்படுத்திய விதம் போர்ரவயோளர்கரள வவகுவோக கவர்ந்தது, ஆச்சர்யப்படுத்தியது. விஜய் டிவி-யின் சூப்பர் சிங்கர் ஜுனியர்-1 நிகழ்ச்சியின் வவற்றி நோயகன் திரு. கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி சிறப்பு விருந்தினைோக பங்கு வபற்று, தன் வசீகை குைைோல் போர்ரவயோளர்கரள தன்வயப்படுத்தினோர்.

விைோவில் சுமோர் 400க்கும் பமற்பட்ட நம் ஆஸ்டின் மக்கள் வருரகத்தந்து, வமன்பமலும் சிறப்பித்தனர். வைக்கம் பபோை ஆட்டம், போட்டம், வகோண்டோட்டம் என்று இந்த விைோவிலும் கைகைப்புக்கு பஞ்சம் இல்ரை. பமலும்

நிகழ்ச்சியின் இரடயிரடபய போர்ரவயோளர்களின் அனுமதிச் சீட்டு எண்ரணக் வகோண்டு குலுக்கல் முரறயில் பரிசுகள வகோடுக்கப்பட்டது.

ஆஸ்டின் தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தின் குழு அரமப்பு உறுப்பினர்களோன, தரைவர் அன்பு கிருஷ்ணசுவோமி, துரணத் தரைவர் சங்கர் சிதம்பைம்,

வபோருளோளர் போைோ வபத்தண்ணன், வசயைோளர் சுகந்தி பகோவிந்த், மபகந்திைன் நோகைோஜன் ஆகிபயோர் விைோ பமரடயில், தன்னோர்வோளர்கரளயும் மற்றும் ஊக்கமளித்து உதவிய ஆஸ்டினின் பல்பவறு நிறுவனங்கரளயும் வகளைவித்தனர். பமலும் இந்தியோவில் வபோங்கல் வகோண்டோடும் முரறரயப் பற்றியும் அவமரிக்கோவில் வபோங்கல் வகோண்டோடப்படும் முரறரயப் பற்றியும் கருத்துகளும் முன்வமோைியப்பட்டது. நம் தமிழ் பண்போட்ரடயும், வபோங்கல் திருநோரளயும் நிரனவுக்கு வகோண்டு வரும் வரகயில், பைவிதமோன வபோங்கல் உணவுகள் பரிமோைப்பட்டது. இந்த அறுசுரவ விருந்து நம் மக்களுக்கு மைரும் கிைோமத்து நிரனவுகரள வகோண்டுவந்திருக்கும் என்பரத மிகவும் வபருரமயுடன் கூறிக்வகோள்கிபறோம்.

இந்த ஜூரை பகோரட விடுமுரறயில் வதன் தமிைகத்தின் திற்பைப்பு, பத்மநோபபுைம், குத்தோைம் உள்ளிட்ட, பைவச அனுபவம் அளித்த இடங்களுக்கு முதைில் வசன்பறோம். ஒரு மணி பநைத்துக்கு பமல் குளித்தோலும் வவளிபய வை மறுத்த என் 7 வயது மகரள மிகவும் சிைமப்பட்டுத்தோன் திற்பைப்பு அருவியில் இருந்து வவளிபய வை ரவத்பதோம். குத்தோைம் ஐந்தருவியில் தரைரய நரனக்க மிகவும் சிைமப்பட்படோம். ஒரு வபரிய கும்பல் எல்ைோ இடங்கரளயும் ஆக்கிைமித்துக் வகோண்டு பிறரை வநருங்கபவ விடவில்ரை. பிறகு வமயின் அருவிக்குச் வசன்று ஆரச தீைக் குளித்து வந்பதோம். எங்கள் அதிர்ஷ்டம், சோைலுடன் நல்ை சீசன் பபோைிருந்தது. நோற்பதோண்டு கோைத்தில் இப்பபோதுதோன்

Did you know kitchen wastes, junk mail, and paper products make up over 30% of our garbage? What if there was a simple, non stinky way of reducing your garbage’s carbon foot print by 30%, while reaping the benefits of introducing the miracle of life cycles and science to kids at the same time?

Welcome to Vermicomposting!

Vermicomposting is the process of using worms which eat the micro-organisms forming on the kitchen waste and other compostable material into a black, earthy-smelling, nutrient-rich humus.

How it works:

All worms are not created equal. For composting you need Red Wiggler or Red Earthworms familiar to the fishing population. Your worms have one mission in life: to eat your garbage and cast (i.e. poop) it into super rich soil. It’s really not as disgusting as it sounds (I once had my doubts); it doesn’t produce any noticeable smells (seriously) and it can easily be concealed, even in a tiny living situation

Why bother:

Other than reducing your personal waste, including food scraps, junk mail, bank statements, receipts, newspapers and more, composting helps to reduce your need for chemical (especially petroleum-based) fertilizers. When added to plants' soil, it helps loosen packed Earth, give structure to sandy soils, aid in aeration, reduce the need to water by increasing soil’s ability to retain water, and, in general, provide a happy, healthy, chemical-free home for

OUR MISSION

Provide a platform to bring together like minded folks with an interest in gardening with a special focus to grow and exchange harvests (Eg. “Uzhavar Santhai”) of Indian vegetables locally

Getting started with your own worm bin:

So, how do you get started? There are 5 basic things you will need:

Container - Worm boxes can be purchased or made. Plastic storage containers are

convenient and come in a variety of sizes. These containers are easily transported and

are a nice alternative to heavier wood bins.

Bedding - The bedding for vermicomposting systems must be able to retain both

moisture and air while providing a place for the worms to live. Most of us have plenty of bedding resources in our home,

office or school. Here are some suitable sources of bedding.

Shredded cardboard or Coconut fiber (Found at Round Rock Gardens, or pet stores) are great bedding material

Water - Water is needed to moisten the bedding. Place the dry, shredded bedding in a large container and add water until it

covers the bedding. Allow the bedding to absorb as much water as possible before putting it in the worm bin. This could take

from two to 24 hours, depending on the bedding used.

Before putting the bedding in your bin, squeeze the water out from the bedding as much as possible. The bedding should

feel like a well-wrung washcloth.

Worms - The worms used in vermicomposting are called redworms (Eisenia foetida), also know as red wigglers, manure

worms, red hybrid or tiger worms. A local resource to get them “Fresh” is at http://www.texaswormfarm.com/ (We got our

worms from here). How many? You can get 1/2 lb (Approx 500 worms) for about $15, enough to support a large bin.

Kitchen Waste - The kitchen waste fed to worms can come from a variety of sources, including all vegetable and fruit waste

(don't be surprised that some seeds may germinate and potato peels with eyes sprout), pasta leftovers, coffee grounds (with

filter) and tea bags. Worms may have a problem with garlic and onion skins. The easiest method is to spread the scraps in a

thin layer on top of the bedding.

Harvesting - Generally, a worm bin will have produced a significant amount of good vermicompost at between two and

-சுகந்தி வகொேிந்த் சகொங்கு நொட்டு சரமயல் - தமிழ் நோட்டின் ஒவ்வவோரு பகுதிக்கும் தனிப்பட்ட சிறப்பு என்றோல், அதில் உணவும் அடங்கும். இந்த பகுதியில் வகோங்கு நோட்டின் உணவு முரற மற்றும் வசய்முரறரயப் போர்க்கைோம். பதரவயோனரவ வமோச்ரச - 1 கப் கத்தரிக்கோய் - 6 ( நீளவோக்கில் நறுக்கியது) வவங்கோயம் - 1/2 (நறுக்கியது) கடுகு - 1 டீஸ்பூன் கறிபவப்பிரை - சிறிது புளிக்கரைசல் - 1/2 கப் ேதக்கி அரரக்க: சின்ன வவங்கோயம் - 15 வைமிளகோய் - 6 சீைகம் - 1 டீஸ்பூன் மல்ைிப்வபோடி - 1 படபிள் ஸ்பூன் மிளகு - 1/2 டீஸ்பூன் சசய்முரற வமோச்ரசரய 8 மணி பநைம் ஊற ரவக்கவும். பிறகு அரதக்கழுவி குக்கரில் ரவத்து 6 விசில் விட்டு பவக விடவும்.வதக்கி அரைக்க வகோடுத்துள்ளவற்ரற சிறிது எண்வணய் விட்டு வதக்கி நன்கு அரைக்கவும். கடோயில் எண்வணய் விட்டு கடுகு தோளித்து, வவங்கோயம் கறிபவப்பிரை பசர்த்து வதக்கவும். பிறகு கத்தரிக்கோய் பசர்த்து வதக்கி, அதில் அரைத்த விழுதில் போதிரய பசர்த்து , புளிக்கரைசல் பசர்த்து வகோதிக்கவிடவும்.

அதில் பவகரவத்த வமோச்ரச மற்றும் மீதி உள்ள அரைத்த விழுது பசர்த்து வகோதிக்கவிடவும். வமோச்ரச குைம்பு வைடி. கரடசியோக சிறிது பவகரவத்த வமோச்ரசரய அரைத்து பசர்த்தோல் குைம்பு வகட்டியோக வரும். பதங்கோய்ப்போலும் பசர்க்கைோம்.
