    City Life

    Australian cities have the same problems

    as other cities of the World. There are

    poor people, homeless people, people

    with drinking problems, etc. The

    problems are big ones, but at least the

    cities are small and the friendliest people

    live in the smallest towns. Melbourne

    has beautiful parks and gardens, and

    some fine old buildings, but it is not like

    Sydney. Sydney is full of exciting new

    ideas. Melbourne is perhaps a little old-fashioned.

    Sport

    Australians are lucky. They have a perfect

    climate, and an endless amount of land. They

    have wonderful waves for sufers on their

    beaches and more snowfields than Switzerland.

    They also have a strong wish to win. The main

    sports are surfing, tennis playerand cricket.

    Australian animals:

    Platypuses

    Kangaroos

    Rainbow lokikeets

    Koala bears

    Crocodiles

    Tasmanian Tiger

    kookaburra

    Australian and the World

    Australians have taken a long

    time to discover that they are

    nearer to Asia than to Europe.

    What do you think?

    Food

    Have you ever heard of Vegemite?No, dont worry.

    Its salty black stuff with a strong taste that Australians

    eat on their bread.

    And whats a tinny? Its a can of Australian beer,

    strong, and always very cold.

    And whats a peach melba? Go and try one. Youll love

    it. Its a delicious pudding made with peaches, cream,

    cake, and nuts.

    Australian wine is good, and more and more people are

    drinking it, but beer is still the most popular drink.

    A lot of Australians think you

    shouldnt worry too much

    about life. Are there any

    problems at work? Is there a

    strange noise in the engine of

    the car? Isnt there enough

    tucker for the picnic?

    Dont worry, they say.

    Shell be right. (Everything

    will be alright .)

    It is only a little smaller than the United

    States of America, and it is bigger than

    Western Europe.

    Did you know Australia is one of the oldestlands in the World?

    During millions of years, wind and water

    have slowly taken the earth from the hillsand filled the valleys with it.

    Australia has three

    different climates. North

    of the Tropic of

    Capricorn the weather is

    tropical hot and wet. In

    the centre, the climate is

    very dry, and the land is

    mainly desert. In the

    south, it is pleasant, with

    cool winters and warm

    summers.

    There are six different states

    in Australia: Western

    Australia, Queensland, New

    South Wales, Victoria,

    Tasmania and South Australia.

    There are also two territories:

    Northern Territory, and

    Australian Capital Territory,

    with Canberra, the nations

    capital city, in it.

    Each Australian state has its

    own government, and its

    own capital city. The state

    capitals are Perth, Brisbane,

    Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart,

    and Adelaide.

    Welcome to Australia!

    LanguageWhat language do you think Australians speak?

    English, of course. Well, a kind of English anyway.

    Dont be surprised if you cant understand everything

    they say. Do you know what a sheep station is, for

    example? Its a big sheep farm. And what about a

    jumbuck? Thats a sheep. But dont worry about it.

    Australian English isnt really difficult. A lot of words

    are made by shortening English words.

    Shortened word:

    Arvo = afternoon

    Aussie = Australian

    Gbye = goodbye

    Gday = hello (good day)

    Ta = thank you

    Uni = university

    Very common Australian words:

    Amber fluid = beer

    Bonzer = very good

    Crook = ill

    Pom = an English person

    Tucker = food

    Seppo = an American

    Sheila = a young woman

    Ocker = the kind of Australian man who likes drinking

    and talking about sport
