General Information

Of the seven continents, Australia is the smallest by land mass and the second smallest by population, beaten only by

Antarctica which has no permanent residents. While Australia may be small compared to other continents, it is the sixth

largest country in the world by land mass. There are approximately twenty three million people living in Australia. The

most populated city in Australia is Sydney, followed closely by Melbourne.

History

The first Australians were thought to have come about forty thousand to sixty thousand years ago from New Guinea and

Indonesia, establishing a population of at least 350 thousand before the first European contact. The first people to

document their contact with Australia were the Dutch, led by Willem Jaszoon. After the Dutch came the Spanish, led by

Pedro Fernandez de Quiros. Australia comes from Terra Australis which, in latin, means “land of the south”. The first

person believed to coin this name was Captain Matthew Flinders, who wrote “A Voyage to Terra Australis” which was

published in 1814. The British arrived almost fifty years later and laid claim to Australia about ninety years after that.

Geography

The majority of Australia's population is concentrated on the southern and eastern coasts, while the rest of the land

remains relatively unpopulated: vegetation covers 91 percent of the country. Because the population is so concentrated,

Australia is one of the world's most urbanized countries. Australia has a very diverse climate structure, including

equatorial, tropical, desert and grassland climates. Much of the plant and animal life native to Australia cannot be found

anywhere else. The highest point of Australia is Mount Kosciuszko in the Snowy Mountains in Kosciuszko National Park,

New South Wales, which reaches 2,228 meters above sea level. The lowest point of Australia is Lake Eyre, one of the

world's largest natural inland drainage systems, which reaches 15 meters below sea level. Australia is bordered by the

Pacific Ocean to the east and the Indian Ocean to the west.

Demographics

Australia has a capitalist economy which is ranked one of the largest in the world. Australia has the third highest life

expectancy in the world, ranking below only Iceland and Switzerland. About 25 percent of Australians were born in

another country, the largest influx being from the United Kingdom. English is the dominant language in Australia,

followed by Italian and Greek. Even though English is the most common language of Australia, the country does not have

an official national language. The Protestant religion is most popular, followed by the Roman Catholic religion.

Landmarks

The Sydney Opera House is one of Australia's most easily recognized landmarks. It was opened to the public in 1973 and

has become the busiest venue in the world. The opera house holds three thousand events every ear. Another landmark

characteristic of Australia is the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland. This reef is the world's biggest coral reef,

made from about three thousand individual reefs, and is home to several endangered species. Kangaroo Island is also

home to interesting wildlife. Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia and hosts wildlife tours the native

brush and beaches.

We had to make bigger our image and goodwill more coherent and to communicate

through it our whole set of values. We re-evaluated most of the things: our new name,

new logo, office design, the exterior design of transportation, the brochures, billboards

and launch a campaign to promote new company and image of the company. It was also

now that we assumed the new slogan: "We just don't say the best, We do the best”

National Tourism Award winner - No venture can be successful without a vision and

determination to excel. Behind our steady growth is the focused and well-planned

business strategy of its dynamic leader. Our directors with their exceptional vision,

foresight & strategic planning have ensured the commendations of all in the travel

WE ENDEAVOR TO BE RESPONSIBLE tour operator and respect nature and the

environment we work in. Tourism is a key element in the global economy, but it also has

its downside. Environmental protection is nothing new to us, which has been

committing itself to environmental activities since 2000. Since then, we have regularly

taken part in cleaning projects on various mountain paths that have been affected by

intensive tourism.

We operate our own environmental cleaning projects to keep the environment neat,

clean and green. We also organize ecology training and attract volunteers to participate

in our environmental projects. Moreover, we aim to bring awareness to our employees

on the necessity to care for nature and the environment.

We encourage activities such as reducing the use of paper, plastic and electric energy in

office activities, re-use and recycling.

Dreams Wishes&Sanyog Gupta Foundation

For us charity begins at home. We would soon launch a charitable organisation name

“Sanyog Gupta Foundation”. The foundation will help out all waifs and stray

children, needy people for living and other health related financial aid.

We made an announcement of this foundation in an interview to the newspaper here in

New Delhi, India. I have been thinking of opening a foundation like this for long and

when I am settled mentally and financially I decided it's the right prospect to announce

our foundation, because for us charity begins at home.

The charitable sector is an imperative and captivating one, economically socially and

culturally. Every one of the world's great religions emphasises the moral imperative of

charitable living. There is no code of ethics, whether religiously based or secular, that

does not mandate the strong to look after the week, shares Sanyog.

We have made a start by planning, organising, directing, staffing and controlling and

soon the project will hit the ground. We would be glad to be given any help from the

corporate world to raise funds for the foundation.

Day 01: Arrive Port Moresby – AlotauArrive Port Moresby, meet assist with connecting flight to Alotau & transfer to hotel. Afternoon tour of Alotau and Surroundings.

Port Moresby, also referred to as Pom Town or simply Moresby, is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the shores of the Gulf of Papua, on the south-eastern coast of the Papuan Peninsula of the island of New Guinea. The city emerged as a trade centre in the second half of the 19th century.

During World War II it was a prime objective of conquest of the Imperial Japanese forces during 1942–43 as a staging point and air base to cut off Australia from Southeast Asia and the Americas.

In 2000 it had a population of 254,158. As of 2011 it had a population of 364,145, giving it an annual growth rate of 2.1% over a nine-year period. The place where the city was founded has been inhabited by the Motu-Koitabu people for centuries. The first European to see it was Captain John Moresby in 1873. It was named in honour of his father, Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby.

Although Port Moresby is surrounded by Central Province, of which it is also the capital, it is not part of that province, but forms the National Capital District. Day 02: Alotau (B+D)After breakfast, full day tour of market, village and experience some cultural performances.

Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province, in the southeast of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the northern shore of Milne Bay. Alotau is also the annual forum for Australian and Papua New Guinean ministers. Its Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the episcopal see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alotau–Sideia.

The town is located within the area in which the invading Japanese army suffered their first land defeat in the Pacific War in 1942, before the Kokoda Track battle. A memorial park at the old battle site commemorates the event. Alotau became the provincial capital in 1969, when it was shifted from Samarai.

There is a road from Ulumani to Alotau which passes the local Gurney Airport, named after squadron leader Charles Raymond Gurney of the Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed in the area in 1942. The airport is located 12 km from the town.

Alotau is the gateway to the Milne Bay Province, which contains some of the most remote island communities in the world. Milne Bay is noted for its coral reef and scuba diving experiences.

Day 03: Alotau – Rabaul (B+D)After breakfast, transfer to Alotau airport for flight to Port Moresby. Arrive Port Moresby, meet and assist with connecting flight to Rabaul. Arrive Rabaul and transfer to Hotel.

Rabaul is a township in East New Britain province, on the island of New Britain, in the country of Papua New Guinea. New Britain is an island about 60 kilometres to the east of the island of New Guinea. Rabaul was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash of a volcanic eruption.

During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres away. Rabaul is continually threatened by volcanic activity due to having been built on the edge of Rabaul caldera, a flooded caldera of a large pyroclastic shield.

Day 04: Rabaul (B+D)After breakfast, proceed for sightseeing in Rabaul to the World War II relics and sites and monuments, Volcano Site, Rabaul Market, village for village experiences and performances of some cultural dances or activities. Return to the Hotel.

Rabaul was planned and built around the harbor area known as Simpsonhafen (Simpson Harbour) during the German New Guinea administration, which controlled the region between 1884 and formally through 1919. From 1910 Rabaul was the headquarters of German New Guinea until captured by the British Empire during the early days of World War I.

Day 01: Arrive Port Moresby – Mount HagenArrive Port Moresby, meet assist with transit flight to Mt Hagen and transfer to hotel. Afternoon tour of Mt Hagen and Surroundings.

Although Port Moresby is surrounded by Central Province, of which it is also the capital, it is not part of that province, but forms the National Capital District.

Day 02 : Mount Hagen – Goroka (B+D)After breakfast, proceed for vehicle tour along the Waghi valley to climb over the Daulo Pass into Goroka. Stop at a Mindima village for Cultural performances of Mud men, Black and white Skeleton Man, and the Spirit legend performance and the fire maker.

Goroka is the capital of the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea. It is a town of approximately 19,000 people (2000), 1600m above sea level. It has an airport (in the centre of town) and is on the "Highlands Highway", about 285 km from Lae in Morobe province and 90 km from the nearby town of Kainantu also in the Eastern Highlands. Other nearby towns include Kundiawa in Simbu Province and Mount Hagen in Western Highlands Province.

It is the home of several national institutions; CRMF Christian Radio Missionary Fellowship, the PNG Institute of Medical Research, the National Film Institute, the Melanesian Institute, the Raun Raun Theatre Company and the University of Goroka. Several NGOs also have presences there, including Oxfam and Save the Children.

Coffee is a common cash crop in the area; smaller industries include trout farms, pigs, bee keeping and food gardens (broccoli, kau kau or sweet potato, carrots, ginger and peanuts are examples of produce that grow well here.

Day 03: Goroka (B+D)After breakfast, proceed to drive along the town to the market, Raun Raun Theatre building, Coffee Factory building, the JK McCarthy Museum and Daulo village.

Day 04: Goroka – Port Moresby (B+D)After breakfast, flight to Port Moresby meet and transfer to Hotel. Afternoon tour of Port Moresby City and surroundings includes visit to the Adventure Park, Parliament Building, Hanuabada Village Look Out. Return to the Hotel.

During World War II, some Papuan men enlisted in the Papua Infantry Battalion and others as carriers over trails and rough terrains (porters) as supply support to Allied and Japanese armies during long jungle marches.

Historian William Manchester makes it plain in his biography of General Douglas MacArthur, American Caesar, that acting as porters was well down the natives' list of acceptable voluntary activities and that they would fade away without great inducements. Many Papuan residents of Port Moresby either returned to their family villages or were evacuated to camps when the threat of Japanese invasion loomed.

The city became, by September 1942, home to an important Allied complex of bases and thousands of troops were eventually stationed in the area or more often, staged through it, as it was the last Allied bastion on the island and, conversely, a key staging and jumping off point as the Allies began conducting offensive warfare themselves, pushing back the Japanese advances.

The Papua New Guinea National Museum and National Library are in Waigani. A mansion was built in Port Moresby just west of the old legislative building, but the last pre-independence chief minister and first prime minister of the sovereign state declared it not nearly grand enough.

How much does a night on safari cost? This is a common question, but one that is extremely difficult to answer. There are many factors that go into pricing one night on safari such as: the time of year (many lodges have seasonal pricing), the standard of accommodation, and what is included.

What are the best times of year to travel? To simplify an answer to a complex question, we have put together a month by month guide of the best times to visit each of the countries in Australia that we feature. We have taken into account, weather, temperature, wildlife viewing, and seasonal events in our selections. There are benefits of visiting countries in the off season.

In terms of a safari experience, the wet season might mean more chance of you getting wet, but it might also mean a better chance of getting up close to the wildlife and enjoying the green landscape.

Are children able to go on safari? The minimum age limit required to stay at a safari lodge or camp is determined by the property itself and varies from place to place. Generally speaking, children must be over six years old to participate in game drives. Some lodges do not accept children under 12 years old. There are exceptions to this rule, particularly if you charter your own safari vehicle and private guide.

What travel documents do I need? All visitors are required to carry a passport that is valid for six months beyond the intended length of stay. Nationals of certain countries do not require visas - this depends on the country you are visiting. It is advisable to check with the Consulate of the country you intend visiting for the latest visa and entry requirements. We assist our clients with information regarding the visa requirements for each destination visited.

How do I phone the country? You can dial an international country direct. First dial the your country's international code (+) for dialling out of the country (for example, 00 in England). Then dial the specific international code required for the country you are calling (see below), the area code of the region you need and then the specific number.

Up to 20 seconds may pass before you hear ringing. In certain countries, ringing resembles an engaged tone. In these cases, an engaged tone will be a short signal repeated rapidly.

Is English spoken widely?Yes. English is spoken throughout Australia, especially by those involved in the tourist trade. Many countries use English as their language of education in schools and universities. Is vegetarian/halal/kosher food available?Yes. Special dietary requirements are catered for throughout Australia. Please give advanced notice to places where you intend staying if meals are included in your package. Most restaurants offer selections for vegetarians, depending on their forte.

Local specialities can be surprisingly good! With the exception of a few upmarket lodges, halal and kosher food is not available at most camps/lodges.

When are the banks open?Banks in Australia are generally open on weekdays during office hours or mornings only. Some countries have banks that open until about 11:00am on Saturdays.

Are there any medical precautions? As vaccination requirements change from time to time, we suggest you consult your local doctor or health department for prophylactics and the latest health precautions. Some countries require advance inoculations (and certificates thereof). Most lodges have qualified emergency first-aid staff members.

I am a single traveler is this ok?You don't have to worry about the fact that you are travelling alone. We also have a lot of single travellers. That's the great thing about these trips is that you are in a group so you won't feel alone at all. There is no single supplement on our rates so everyone pays the same.

Is there an age limit on tours? With regards to age limits, we have had younger and older passengers travel with us without any problem. We just ask that you are fit enough as we have participation trips. Other trips are only open to participants aged 18 and older.

You will be required to put up & down your own tent, help out the cook with cooking & cleaning duties and do security. You will need to be able to climb the ladder steps to get on & off the Overland truck. Passengers over 60 years are required to have a medical certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Page 43: AUSTRALIA & PACIFIC - sanyog.travel€¦ · Largest City: Sydney, Australia – 4,921,000 (2015) Number of Countries: 3 Highest Point / Lowest Point: Mount Kosciuszko / Lake Eyre

43

How do I charge my batteries for my camera/ iPod/ laptop? We recommend you bring along 2 sets of rechargeable batteries + 2 sets of normal batteries, so you can be guaranteed of having working batteries at all times. Some of the campsites will have electricity points (bring along an international converter plug) where you can recharge your batteries.

If you know you take a lot of photos, then rather spend a bit more on buying an extra card with a high storage capacity and bring along extra batteries.

There are many Overland trucks travelling through Australia, how to choose one? There are a lot of overland companies out there in Australia offering similar experiences. Mostly the trucks run a similar route, but depart on different days, so you will probably see trucks on the road or at your campsite, irrelevant of who you choose to travel with.

On choosing an overland company, remember you need to check up on their experience in the industry, the backup they offer on the road and what the general commentary is out there about the company. At the end of the day you get what you pay for, so always check what's included and what's not and Previous travellers feedback.

Are there luggage limits? The check in luggage limits on the regional commercial flights is 20 kg pp (44 lbs per person) plus you are allowed 1 carry on bag. Unless otherwise specified, if your Australian safari itinerary involves any light aircraft transfers in Nulkaba, Kotara or Gunnedah, there is a limit of 15 - 20 kg (44 lbs) per person.

What about wild animals whilst on safari? Most private camps in Australia are unfenced, so listen to your camp staff and guides. Don't push any safety issues – you will not be in any theme parks where the animals are tame. Don't ever go strolling away from the camp or from your guide.

Is self driving safe in Australia? When self driving in Australia, please bear in mind that the standards of driving are not as high as that of the average road user in places like Europe, Britain and North America. The roads are generally good and well marked, but one must drive defensively, always anticipating the worst from your fellow road users. It is advisable to carry cash with you as there are toll gates on certain national roads where you will need to pay a fee.

What about crime in Australia?Crime has been a much reported evil of certain areas in Australia, particularly the big cities. We have had no problems of this nature happen to any of our Australia safari clients. The hotels we suggest are in good areas and you are invariably out of the rough city centres.

Are there any specific requirements for passports? It is the responsibility of the client to ensure that their passports are valid for travel to Australia, for at least 6 months after the date of termination of services, provided by Australian travel gateway. The passport must also have at least 3 - 4 blank pages in it. This is critical as you will not be allowed into South Africa without meeting these requirements.

What type of electricity can I expect in Australia? In Australia current is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles per second. Please note that some game lodges do not have electricity and run on generators. You will not find plug sockets in the rooms/tents at lodges.

In Australia, appliances all run on 220/240 volts. Outlets are round 3-pin, 15 amp type. Points for electric shavers (electric current 250VAC) are available at major hotels and most state-owned rest camps and resorts. It is advisable to bring battery operated or conventional razors if visiting remote areas during the course of your holiday.

Will I be able to see the great migration? As nature is unpredictable, we are hesitant to give a guarantee, but we have been in the business for a long time and are your best resource for getting as close to the action as possible. We know the best river crossings, hot air balloon safaris, and mobile camps to make the Great Migration a memory that will last a lifetime. We've got a great blog post that we hope you find useful, but speak to our travel advisors for answers to your specific questions.

Which beach destinations can I combine with a safari?Australia offers wonderful opportunities for a multi-centre holiday that includes an exciting wildlife safari, a relaxing beach stay, and a cultural city visit. We have put together some of our favourite itineraries that highlight the diversity of the dark continent, but bear in mind that these are just suggestions. All of our holidays are tailor-made to your specifications, so please contact our travel advisors to create your own adventure.
