A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL PARTNERRIO TINTO IS PROUD TO HAVE SUPPORTED THE COSSACK ART AWARDS SINCE ITS INCEPTION 22 YEARS AGO, AND AS PRINCIPAL PARTNER SINCE 2002.The Cossack Art Awards is not only a major event on the Pilbara arts programme, it is becoming more widely known throughout Australia. It highlights many remarkable works of local, state and national artists, as well as showcasing the historic and beautiful town of Cossack. Integral to our support is the Artist in Residence programme. This year Lesley Munro, winner of the Best Overall Artwork Prize in 2013, will be visiting Cossack in the lead up to the 2014 Cossack Art Awards.
While it’s the visual appeal of the artworks that draw us in, it’s the stories and images behind the pieces that impact us. The stories told in the exhibition are not only important to the artists, but also to the community and the region, continuing to form a unique genre of recording historical interpretation and cultural significance.
Storytelling articulated through artistic expression can be extremely powerful- challenging and thought provoking. It is an important reason why Rio Tinto has long been a major supporter of arts and culture throughout Western Australia.
One area that deeply reflects our commitment is our ongoing support of programmes with the City of Karratha. In 2012 we formalised a five year partnership worth $4.85 million with the City of Karratha, to focus on the delivery of events and festivals in the region. This has resulted in the increased delivery of high quality arts and cultural events including Moonrise Cinema, Red Earth Arts Festival, Australia Day celebrations and the Cossack Art Awards.
We thank the City of Karratha for its leadership of the iconic Cossack event, and value its vision for the delivery of arts and culture in the region. We look forward to continuing to partner with the council and local communities in Cossack and other significant programmes and events.
Andrew Harding Chief executive – Iron Ore
A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MAYORWELCOME TO THE 2014 COSSACK ART AWARDS. I AM DELIGHTED TO PRESENT THE AWARDS AGAIN THIS YEAR ALONGSIDE OUR PRINCIPAL PARTNER RIO TINTO, WHOSE STRONG COMMITMENT TO ARTS AND CULTURE IN OUR REGION HAS HELPED GROW THESE AWARDS INTO THE NATIONALLY SIGNIFICANT ART PRIZE THEY ARE TODAY.The City of Karratha has undergone significant change over the past few years as we continue our transformation from a mining town into a major regional city of the north – a vision that is becoming a reality after officially being declared the City of Karratha in July. With that we have seen an increase in population and demand for improved community infrastructure, services and quality of life which would be expected of a city our size.
We recognise that arts and culture play a vital role in creating vibrant communities and it is events like the Cossack Art Awards that have been pivotal in our region’s city transformation. As our community continues to grow into a thriving city of 50,000 people, so too will our treasured community events and facilities.
With a dedicated cultural precinct in the planning which will feature a performing arts centre, art gallery and outdoor amphitheatre, the City of Karratha is committed to continuing to support arts and culture development in our region, with the Cossack Art Awards shining bright as the jewel in the crown of the City’s arts calendar.
I look forward to watching the Cossack Art Awards grow in popularity and quality every year as they continue to attract the very best talent across the Pilbara and Australia, and take their place amongst the most highly regarded art prizes in the country.
Peter Long City of Karratha Mayor

His most powerful works are portraits of young aboriginal men which belong to series which he calls “Contemplation”. His bold use of colour and shape in semi abstract paintings of the Kimberley landscape is also an instantly recognisable feature of many works. His etchings usually feature Australian fauna, in particular emus. Two books have been published which focus on his artistic output, one in 1999, Mark Norval His Story and Work and most recently Mark Norval Kimberley Artist published in 2009.
EXHIBITION
The Cossack Art Award Exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 3pm from Sunday 20 July to Sunday 10 August, in the Post and Telegraph Building and the Bond Store, Cossack, WA. Entry to the exhibition is free.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Rio Tinto’s Artist in Residence Prize, Lesley Munro, last year’s winner of the Cossack Art Award, will be the Artist in Residence at Cossack for 2014. With beginnings in watercolour and printmaking, Munro’s practice has developed from themes within landscape, often locating and documenting a sense of place, with an underlying interest in surface abstraction and process. Her major practice is currently in painting, at times combined with sculpture.
Rio Tinto Rail Operations general manager Zara Fisher said the Artist in Residence program is a valued component of the Cossack Art Awards.
”Rio Tinto is proud to support the Artist in Residence program through our long-term sponsorship of the Cossack Art Awards with the City of Karratha,” Mrs Fisher said.
“Not only does the program provide a great opportunity for the community to engage with Lesley Munro as she creates a new body of work, they can learn new skills and techniques through her series of workshops.”
Lesley Munro has spent many years observing the colours and spaces of the night, travelling through the darkness and expressing her responses in paint and photography. Her afternoon/evening workshop, Beyond The Gloaming, will consist of initial exercises in colour and tone to help participants understand how to capture some of the magic of the evening. This will be followed by a painting session on site, working through the afternoon until after dark.
The workshops are free and will be held on July 26th and 27th from 2pm to 7pm. Places are limited so please send an email to [email protected] at your earliest convenience to secure your place.

The 2014 Artist in Residence (AIR) program, valued at $15,000, is offered to the Best Overall Artist. The artist is invited to spend six weeks residing in Cossack in the lead up and opening week of the 2015 Cossack Art Award. At the completion of the residency it is intended that the artist will have developed sketches/maquettes and/or completed pieces towards a new body of work.
The presence of the artist in Cossack is of great value to the community and as such it is intended that the artist be available for a minimum of two public events such as an artist talk and a workshop. By spending a significant amount of time in the residency space located within the Cossack townsite it is also intended that the artist will be available for conversation with staff and visitors. The final format of the AIR program will be agreed upon by the artist and the City of Karratha.

BRIEF HISTORY OF COSSACK AND THE ART AWARDS
THE BEAUTIFUL COASTAL TOWN OF COSSACK, LOCATED SOME 1600 KILOMETRES NORTH OF PERTH, HAS A BRILLIANT HISTORY DATING BACK TO 1886 WHEN FRANCIS T GREGORY UNDERTOOK THE FIRST EUROPEAN EXPLORATION OF THE PILBARA REGION IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA’S NORTH WEST.
A port was soon established to support the local pastoral industry and since then the town has supported a variety of activities, including the development of a significant pearling industry. As industry in Cossack grew and declined so too did its population. The once thriving multicultural town of more than 400 people was virtually abandoned by the early 1950s.
Today, the retired town of Cossack serves as a popular tourist destination and its beautifully restored buildings, a perfect place to host the region’s most highly anticipated art prize.
The Cossack Art Awards had their genesis in the early 1990s. They were the brainchild of former Cossack caretaker Brian Hoey, who developed the concept of exhibiting the works of local artists in the newly restored buildings of the historic Cossack settlement. Artists
eagerly submitted works to be displayed within the enchanting architecture of magnificent granite and bluestone masonry.
In the early years the Cossack Art Awards were held in the Bond Store, with local resource companies Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd (Rio Tinto), Robe River Iron Associates and Woodside Offshore Petroleum as major sponsors. In 1998 Philip Crabb, mining entrepreneur and tireless advocate for regional Western Australia, became the inaugural patron of the Cossack Art Awards. In 2004 Michael Wright of Voyager Estate also became a patron of the awards.
Entries to the awards have multiplied over the years, resulting in additional demand for wall space. Since 1999 artworks have not only been displayed in the Bond Store, but also in the Post and Telegraph Building.
Sponsorship and patronage has also increased and the Cossack Art Awards have grown to become the richest acquisitive art award in regional Australia.
In July every year, the beautiful and historic town of Cossack comes alive with the work of hundreds of talented artists from across the region and Australia for the Cossack Art Awards. Attracting thousands of visitors each year, vibrant entries dress the walls of the heritage listed buildings for three weeks of public display.
In 2014 we celebrate the growth of the Cossack Art Awards over their 22-year history, the outstanding contribution they make to arts and culture in the Pilbara region and the future of the awards in years to come.
