SAILING, BOATING AND FISHING – LATE NEWS SUPPLEMENTClub and State Tests for National 16ft Title Selection

Queensland Test SeriesThe test races for state representation in the forthcoming Australian Championship at Botany Bay, Sydney, during the Christmas & New Year holidays have provided sailing enthusiasts with sailing of the highest order.

The first race, sailed on Saturday, November 6th, was sailed on an ebb tide with a light north-east breeze. The fleet of 20 skiffs got away to a good start, & Ron Wright, with his new skiff “Joy”, soon showed out, &, giving a grand display of sailing both on & off the wind, led right through the race. “Gralex”, “Mercia” & “Vi V” were close rivals to the leader, & towards the end of the race, when the wind freshened, “Vi V”, who was in fourth position, sailed through the lee of “Gralex” to take up second position.

With the final run on the wind to the finishing line, “Joy” still held the lead & crossed the line 30 seconds ahead of “Vi V”. “Gralex” & “Joyous Too” surprised by sailing past “Mercia” & taking the 3rd & 4th positions, with “Mercia” finishing 5th.

Many skiff supporters were a little cynical regarding the course selected by the association, but as the championship races are to be sailed on a similar course, the association was doing the right thing by by sailing the tests on such a course, & the sailing proved that the finish on the wind instead of off the wind did not make any material difference to the competitors.

The second test was sailed on Sunday, 7th November, & a strong north-east wind was too much for many of the competitors.

Capsizes and retirement from the race saw only 8 skiffs complete the course. From a capital start, “Vi” lost no time, & opened up a lead, followed by “Mercia” & “Joy”.December, 1948

On the run to the finishing line “Vi” showed her superiority, & again went away & crossed the finishing line 34 seconds ahead of “Mercia”, followed by “Joy” &, after a space of 6 minutes, came “Gralex”, “Joyous Too”, “J.M.H.”,”Tilba” & “Apex”.

The 3rd test race went to “Vi V”, with “Mercia” & “Joy” second & third. Qld representatives for the title races are: “Vi V”, “Joy VI”, “Mercia”, “Gralex”, “Joyous Too”, “Edna” (Maryborough), “Satini” (Townsville) & “N.B.S” (Cairns).

GEORGES RIVER CLUBPREPARATIONS

The Georges River Sailing Club is turning Doll's Point into a “luxury camp” at Christmas for the Australian 16 footers Championship, to be be held for the first time in history on Botany Bay. Club President (Mr Dick McPhillips) says he expects visitors from all parts of Australia. To solve the living problem at least 12 caravans & 6 huge tents will be used for accommodation with all mod. Cons. The club is also putting on a £50 special invitation race for the visitors as a Christmas present.

Manly Sailing Club – Les Stewart's “Austral”, which recently completed a fine double in winning the first heat of the club championship & the handicap race held in conjunction, was number one representative for the Manly

Sailing Club in the N.S.W. 16Ft test races for State representation in the National Sixteen Titles.

Other Manly representatives were brother Dud Stewart in “Scamp” and Clarrie Seller in “Nor-Easter'.

St George 16 Ft Sailing ClubThe first test race on November 5 was conducted over the N.S.W. Skiff Association Test & Australian Championship course at Botany Bay. This event, sailed in a “black” nor-easter, was easily won by “Oh Johnny” (Billo Hayward) from “Miss Ellen” (Vince Minter) & “Resolve” (F. Rolleston).

The second test was sailed over the same course on Saturday, November 12, in a medium S.E. breeze. This race was anything but a walkover, and “Oh Johnny” crossed the finishing line with only a small margin from “Laurel” (Pat Collis), “Nereis” (R. Roberts) & “Marney” (L. Riley).

Toronto 16-ft Club“Rebel” (Keith Scroder), scratch boat, has won 3 races this season – one in an interclub fixture with Belmont Club, where she was receiving only one minute start from Boyd Humphreys. Representatives from this club for Botany Bay tests were: “Rebel”, “Myee” (Arch McKinnon) & “Pam” (N. Bull).

Belmont Sailing ClubRepresentatives for the N.S.W. 16 footer test races from Belmont Sailing Club were “Aenead” (Boyd Humphreys), “Robco” (Col Humphreys), & “Aero” (N. Miner).

“Aenead”, a new boat this season, won the club champioship & has recorded the fastest time in all but one of the races held by the club this season. It's a fine record.

maintained her lead to cross the line 1 minute 40 seconds ahead. “Janet” was 3rd, 4 minutes 35 seconds behind “Jenny III” & “Alstar” 30 seconds behind “Janet”. “Alstar had spinnaker trouble on the final run to the finishing line.

A boxing tournament will be held at Bulimba Picture Theatre on November 3, in aid of Brisbane 18-Footers Club & QueenslandAmateur Boxing & Wrestling Association. Olympic representatives are putting on a display.

A club raffle is being conducted. First prize is a 10ft sailing boat (donated by Norm Wright Jnr), second prize is a model valued at £5. Tickets are available from Allan & Starks Ltd.

The Club members are endeavouring to raise as much money as possible to send 5 boats to Sydney in January 1949 to contest the Australian Championship.

Last season was one of the best on record from the financial & sporting sides. Queensland's 5 representatives in the Australian Championship filled the first 5 places, “Culex II” being the winner. The trophy for the most consistent boat during last season was won by “Jenny III” with 145 points from “Culex II” with 122 points. “Culex II” won the trophy for the most number of fastest times over the course with 9 times. “Jenny III” second with 8. “Culex II” also won the Club Championship from “Jenny III”.

Racing: On Saturday, September 25, only 1 boat, “Jenny III” braved the weather. The conditions were extremely unsuitable for sailing so the race was

called off. The elements were more favourable on Sunday 26th, when 4 boats faced the starter for thefirst official club race of the 1948 – 49 season. “Australia” did not start. This boat will be on the water by the end of October. W. Parsfield, back again after a severe illness, sent the boats away to a good start. “Alstar” having a slight advantage over the rest of the fleet.

After 5 minutes “Alstar” & “Culex II” were fighting for the lead & “Janet” was next, followed by “Jenny III”. “Janet” while in a handy position to the leaders broke her throat halyard. On the balloon, jib run to the Gibson Island buoy “Jenny III” had gained on the leaders considerably, & after rounding soon passed “Alstar”. “Culex II” rounded the Hamilton buoy ahead of “Jenny III” &

“Culex II” will in future be sailed by E. Smith. “Alstar” should do much better in future when the crew has a regular for'ard hand.

The Sunday, October 3 (Smith Memorial) handicap from a scratch start resulted in a good win for “Jenny III” despite trouble experienced in hauling in her ringtail. “Janet” ran second, “Culex II” third. The race was sailed in a brisk westerly.

ObituaryIt is with regret that we report the death of one of our youngest members, Neville Glynn. Neville passed away on Thursday night, September 16, 1948. Neville was a member of the crew of the Australian & Club champion “Culex II”. To his family & relations, club members express their deepest sympathy.
