(,,t RIVE RINA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Well what a turnaround we have after four rounds of the Carlton Riverina Football League season.

Last year's grand finalists Coolamon and East Wagga-Kooringal are outside the four, Wagga have yet to win a game after finishing third last season and only Turvey Park (4th last year) have managed to retain their four spot early in the season.

Turvey Park is in third position behind unbeaten leaders Narrandera with Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong second and Ariah Park-Mirrool fourth.

There is still a long way to go before the

finals but it certainly appears as though there is going to be a couple of new faces in the final four makeup.

The Representative squad has had a couple of training runs already and appear keen to go all the way in the Winfield Championships this year.

Selectors have a hard task ahead of them settling on the final 20 to represent Riverina as there is quite a number of form players in the league at present.

While a few of the older faces will be missing from this year's team there is still plenty of experience on hand and with some promising young players in the squad the league is sure to be very competitive.

It appears as though Riverina 's first match will be against Tungamah League at Mulwala on May 27.

Here's hoping the players make the selectors job very difficult between now and then.

Bclcive coach Rocky's idea of dividing the players mto the two religious groups for competitive work at training didn ·1 balance too well with one group doubling the other.

Congratulations to Digger Carroll on reaching his nincthieth birthday. Believe his sons did most of the celebrating. ·

The idea of bringing representatives of the Albury Umpires Assoeiauon for a talk with the players proved very successful, ~o they should be all clued up with the rules now.

A big welcome back to Lozza 'Bear' Gibson and the way he started off 111 his first game, he should have a couple more season left in him yet. Finally a word to the opposition Mark Gooden 's mark would probably rate as the best mark taken on our ground. Level with hig Lozza ':,, shoulder:-. gives you some idea how high up he was.

df, ,r: wa:, hr:,t da~~. althnugh Leeton caused a few anAiow, momcnb before the ~1ren ~oundcd. Shaun Quade wa~ ab~olutcly magnificent and there :,cems little doubt that when Shaun i~ firing on all cylinder~ he lifts the rc~t of the ~idc. Peter Sculley wasn't far bchmd him and it is good to sec Scull back in form after a couple of 4uict game~. Other good players. and there were many, were Phil Horan. StL:w1e Litchfield. and Barry Cox.

The Reserve~ were sent out good thing:, to wm again but after mis~ing the start, being caught in a pocket for most of the way and not showmg any ~tamina in the run home, they finished unplaced. The :,electors have ordered a swab on all the runners, claimmg thne were none. Those that did show a bit of dash during the event were Geoff Gilbert. Niel Litchfield, Steve Richens. Robbie Guymer and Paul Horan.

The Under 19~ were completely outclassed by a very good Leeton side. and it ~eems that Maurie and the boys will have to go back to ~cratch and have a think about their game. The ability is there so if you work at it boys you'll break through for a win. London Hotel A ward winners were Brendan Semmler. Kent Lally, Paul Griffin, Andrew Clark and Doug Dowdy.

Today 1t\ the 'Local Derby' against the Bombers and after what :,hould be three good games. let\ celebrate three home side wins.

were about as fluent as a flock of albatros~cs. How we managed to win will remain one of lifcs unsolved mysteries. but. the points are on record now and every little bit helps. Trying to decide on best players was "d1fficult' to put it nicely. but Brett Vearing certainly de~crves top ranking. followed by Hans Hevstratten, Leo Lucas. ·Brvon' Johnstone and Ruff Lucas. I hope we've seen 'the last of the dismal performances and can look forward to some better football in the matches to come.

The Reserves returned to the winners circle again inflicting a crushing defeat over the Tigers in what was a VERY physical encounter. Both sides played rugged football but we emerged victorious after coming right away from the Tigers in the final term. In what was a fine team effort, Buster Fairman, Jack "it's not dead it's alive rat" Walker, Phil Short. Dale Watterson, Gary Ryal! and Ian Gordon produced some of the best form of the match.

The Under l 9s were beaten in the last quarter by the Tiger:,. The match was close all game and the Bombers only failed by ten points to get their second wm for the season on the board. Philip Recs won the Bowling Club and the Coache~ Award and Brian Gaynor the Socb. whilst also to play well were Brian Gordon, Ross Seymour, Brian Prentice and Rodney Gregory.

This week we travel to meet our arch-rivals Ardlcthan

CM_. C_0_O_UI_M_O_N_G_R_A_S_S_H_O_P_P_E_R_S~ 4 Last week saw the second deT JI feat in as many games. We have seemed to forgotten the fundamentals of football. You chnnot win games without doing all

GREEN, WHITE v the hard work which goes with it, i.e.: backing-up, running, and of course the basic skill of passing

the ball. Good players were as scarce as hens teeth, hut none tried hard then Brett (woolpack) Allen, Greg (crazy) Curran, Daryl Bruest. Gary Buchanan, Herbie Pleming and coach Russell.

The Seconds finally showed some of their potential with a fine win over Ginnys Gang. But it took a inspirational and stirring speech by Robbie at quarter time to get them going. Gary Barbander had more kicks than a footy tester at Ross Faulkners factory to take out the main award, while Rod (paddy) Sheather rucked well to win the second award.

The Thirds went down to a much bigger combination. Again the boys seem to leave it to everyone else to get the hard ball and wait to be receivers, but I'm sure with a bit of hard training they will be a better side. The award winners were Shane (tank) Buchanan, Jamie (mildew) Robinson and Wayne (muscles) Kew.

The Trivia Night was a huge success. Everyone was hard guessing some of Tom's questions, but of course Tom's very good at trivia. More club news later from this fine publication or from your friendly Committeeman.

It make-, you feel proud to he a Bulldog when we beat Coolamon with guts and determination, even though the final scores were close we would have been stiff to lose as we were the better side all day. Gerald Pieper's perform

ance was top -,helf along with good players in the Cox brothers, Terrv Ness and Mr. Consistency Peter Cotterill. N~ssy won the Miltons Gea'r Award and the Coach's Award leaders in the Miltons Gear Award arc Cotterill and Greg (Knuckles) Tooze with 16 votes each.

The Reserves once again were in a winning position at half time, but lack of fitness told after the break. David Butler returning from injury won the A.C.I. Award with Richard Sutton winning the Coach's Trophy. But no one tried harder than Ginny all day. In the Reserves A.C.I. Award P. Tooze, T.McGrcgor and D. Butler arc equal leaders on 9 votes a piece. Jason Geise and Bill Bishop were the award winners in the Under 19s good win. The Committee would also like to thank the Under 19 boys who double-up each for the Seconds.

Flag favourites Narrandcra will be tough, but if we display last weeks endeavour we can toss them. Hope to see you all in the Club Bistro after the game.

SYDNEY SCENE with Swans rover Steve Wright

SWANS v FOOTSCRA}' The Swans lacked dbcipline and dircctwn in

the first half of last week's game against Footscray at the Western Oval and ultimately paid the penalty. We lacked drive from the centre hounccs and failed to handle Footscray's running players such as RoyaL Wallis, McKenna, Hawkins, Egan and McLean.

In the third quarter the Swans looked a hettcr side using a lot more teamwork. With the use of the wind the Swans played their best football of the match in this term. In the last quarter the Bulldogs had the wind using it intelligently kicking to position. They defended very well holding the Swans to one point for the quarter. Only a handful of players did well for the Swans

Ian Roberts, Craig Braddy, Bernie Evans and \teve Taubert.

TIP FOR THE YOUNG PLAYERS: Always keep your eyes on the ball and never give up!

year sponsorship for the Riverina District Football League involving Tooheys Breweries. I wish to thank Tooheys and their local representative Mr. Joe Adams for having the confidence in our league. I am sure the R.D.F.L. and its affiliated clubs will do their utmost to assist in promoting our league through, the theme "/ FEEL LIKE A TOOHEYS".

With the assistance of Tooheys the League will conduct, in conjunction with our best and fairest medal count night on Sunday, August 19, a MISS TOOHEYS R.D.F.L. FOOTBALL PRINCESS competition. Prizes to the value of $500 have been allocated to the placcgetters, also $1000 will be divided amongst this years 1st Division grand finalists.

On the medal count night, Wagga Travel will again sponsor the Gerald Clear medal winner, to a travel sponsorship.

Tooheys will also be featured at our VFL sponsored VCFL Country Championship games of which we are now into the semifinals, due to a forfeit on May 19 by South West Gippsland Football League.

This action has prompted league executives to cancel the May 19 bye and move all games forward by a week ( see revised draw on page 42).

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Wayne Stevens and Barry McPherson of Collingullie-Ashmont and David Condon of The Rock-Yerong Creek on their selection in the NSW Teal Cup Squad. The continued selection of players from our League for state and Sydney Swans representation proves the R.D.F.L. is producing and maintaining strong standard of football.

In closing I would like to appeal to all clubs to give Tooheys a go, as they are prepared to give us a go. JOHN YATES President R.D.F.L.

The recefll announcement of a two-year sponsorship by Tooheys Breweries for the Riverina District Football League. will be a tremendous boost for the League. Pictured is R. D. F. L. President Mr. John Yates (right) thanking Tooheys representative Mr, Joe Adams for their valued

support.

RIVERINA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The rather unbelievable forfeit by the South West Gippsland Legue to the R. D. F. L. in their quarter-final match of the V. C. F. L. District Leagues Championships has enabled the R. D. F. L. to progress to the semi-final of the V. F. L. sponsored competition.

A heavy financial commitment met by the S. W. Gippsland League in 1983, left them short of finance to make the journey to Wagga, which means of course, that the

R. D. F. L. have only to win one more match to qualify for a position in the final of the competition.

This match will be played at V. F. L. Park in July, and surely that is incentive enough for the R. D. F. L. to strive for a win in their June 9th encounter against an opponent who won't be determined until the May 19th round of quarter-final matches.

The fact that the forfeit has eventuated means that the competition draw in the R.D.F.L. Division One will be brought forward.

Last week saw the defeat of two fancied teams, namely M. C. U. in Division One and Whitton in Division Two.

Collingullie-Ashmont and Cootamundra are now clear leaders in their respective competitions and remain alone as the teams yet to be beaten in Senior company.

Last weeks performance was in total contrast to the previous week. We moved the ball well, backed up and kicked well which made it easy for the coach, committee and supporters to sleep well on Saturday night. We hope BLACK & WHITE that for everyone's sake this level can STRIPES

be maintained. In a very even team Andv Donelan returned with a vcng~ancc to win the Magpie of the Weck award. Mick 'Kryptonite' Henderson showed us that as well as guts he has the ball skills, and for his great game he won the Courage Award. Every player deserves mention for a great team effort.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the 2nds performance. It was rather pathetic to see. We know you arc capable of much better, so get behind each other and Barry and show m, what you can do Stevie Rainbird won the Magpie of the Weed and Phil Kartinycri the Courage Award.

The Ul9s performance was dismal and although they are usually smaller than most of their opposition they showed a distinct lack of desire and we hope this was onlv a oncer. Dean Hallam won the Magpie of the Week and Stuart Wcilly the R1vcnna Spraying Service Towel Award.

Social coming events include Sunday May 27 is the Footballers Bowls Day at The Rock Bowling Club. This 1s always a great day, so get your teams orgamsed. Whites arc to be worn.

200 Club Tickets arc available from all committeemen so don't be afraid to ask for one. Vice-versa goes to the committeemen and they are reminded that they must be returned, all sold by June 16.

Today we tackle our near neighbours the Gullie, an~ I think we all realize that victory could very well put us m the four Don't let last weeks form slip for such a crucial game.

the VFL Jumper (no.2). PnLc~ posted ~oon.

Firstly, my apologies for the m ahsenct: of our notes last week. The mvsterious forces that caused their non-appearance are vet to be identified. ,. Congratulations to our old BLUE & WHITE

friends Marrar. Correct me if rm STRIPES

wrong, but local historians tell me that, until last SaLurday. Marrar had never had a first grade victory at Barellan.

In a game where strong defences were the dominant feature, the Towel was won by Wayne Flagg. The Encouragement Award to John Conlan.

The Netballers gained maximum points in both games. well done girls! Your smiles were complemented by those on the faces of our Reserve Graders, who notched up their first win. Persistence and dedication does pay off!

Our hard working Ladies Auxiliary elected officer bearers for 1984, they are Evelyn Brown, President; Rhonda Male, Secretary: Nola Trembath, Treasurer. Congratulatmns ladies and keep up the good work.

A Family Bonfire Night will be held on the Queens Birthday Weekend. More details soon. A Masquerade Ball will be held on June 30 at the Barellan Hall.

Players! Don't forget, contnbutions for the trip away are being accepted by 'Fago'. Pay now and ensure yourself of a place.

showed their class and stood head ...... and shoulders above all on the BLACK, RED SASH ground. The Mug was won by Gary

Armstrong with a strong effort at . fullback. Gary looks like having a

big season. Danny Miller took the wine and showed why the club spared no expense to lure him away from his newly married wife on a Saturday afternoon. Andrew Willis had a great game first up and got the Socks.

1'.he 2nds with a lot of young players in, went down agam. Best players David Fox, Cheekv, Paul Patto and Neil Turner. ,

Sorry to see the President and Reserves Coach m violent confrontation at half time in the seconds, regarding the President going to full forward. Work out who's boss boys, your'c only making a spectacle of yourselves.

Apart from the win a Barcllan the other highlight of the week was Gary Shea's 21st birthday. Happy birthday Gary.

In order to give this column a bit of class this week we have included netball news. A Grade went down in a close one 27-21. Best play1..rs Sheree Drake and Jenny Hathcrway (Jenny was a sensation in her first game I believe). B grade showed great improvement to only lose 38-23. Best Anna and Helen Langtry.

This week we welcome old rivals Marian Dons. Over the years we have played many great and many not so great games together. I'm sure todays contest will he one of the above. Sec you all after the game. Welcome home 'Horney'.

Well, as said earlier, the First's effort is perhaps best treated as 'water under the bridge'. T.R.Y.C. were far too good! Coach Ian 'Macca' McKenzie was the only player worthy of the Pewter and accordingly won it. Marty McFadden tried hard as did others I'm sure, but ..

A good roll-up at our club meeting has the social committee all set to 'entertain us'. Social gatherings will be announced in this column regularly. Thanks to the players and their girlfriends who helped out at the Plaza last Saturday. Well done. A special thanks strapper 'Larry'.
