Australian Print Workshop (APW) is a unique centre providing both established and emerging artists with access to a wide range of printmaking equipment and expertise.

Established in 1981, APW fosters the development of printmaking as a vibrant and progressive art form. Through its annual programs, the Workshop represents the very best in contemporary printmaking in Australia.

Collaborative ventures with artists, arts and business organisations, both locally and internationally have produced new and challenging works in the print medium. Through these projects APW has become acknowledged worldwide as a centre for excellence in printmaking.

Australian Print Workshop Gallery presents exhibitions of contemporary limited edition prints, providing a showcase for works produced at the Workshop by both established and emerging artists.

APW Gallery offers a large selection of limited edition prints available for purchase, including works from APW exhibitions and special projects.

Australian Print Workshop’s Winter School program is a great opportunity to explore the power of printmaking with guidance and tuition from APW’s highly skilled team of Printers, using APW’s world-class printmaking facilities.

Located in the heart of vibrant Gertrude Street Fitzroy, APW’s professional printmaking studio is spacious and air-conditioned, providing well maintained and ample printing presses, equipment and facilities.

All APW class participants receive a kit of essential printmaking materials. Classes are suitable for beginners and cater for those wishing to renew their skills or further their creative development.

APW Winter School classes are ideal for art teachers preparing for the school year, as well as senior secondary students wanting to enhance their art folio.

Conditions of enrolment APW classes fill quickly, please email or phone to check availability.

Full payment must be made at time of registration. Refunds will only be given if:

• Payment is received after the class in which the applicant wishes to enrol has been filled.

• The workshop in which the applicant is enrolled has been cancelled.

• The participant notifies APW of their withdrawal at least 14 days before the start date of the workshop.

• A fee of $50 will be charged for each withdrawal.

Learn a range of etching techniques including hard and soft ground, dry point, aquatint, lift ground, a la poupée and chine-collé. Develop and combine the processes gaining insights into professional studio practices and experience the pleasure of printing your own limited edition.

stone lithography Gain an insight into stone lithography, often described as the most painterly of printmaking techniques. Draw and paint onto the surface of finely grained Bavarian limestone. Learn how to prepare the stone, process a drawing and set up for printing. Explore drawing and painting techniques using lithographic pencils, crayons and tusche washes. Understand the intricate process of making a stone lithograph and develop the skills to produce a limited edition print.

APW Combo Class Pick up a combination of skills in this three-day intensive class. Use drawings or photographs as guides to draw, scratch and incise directly into perspex plates, creating images with texture and tone. Create spontaneous and colourful monotypes, merging painting and printmaking, to create beautiful one of a kind prints. Learn how to combine the mediums and utilise chine-collé techniques to create multi-plate images, with water colours and oil-based inks. Ideal for teachers to take back to the class room setting and high school students preparing their final art portfolios.

Plate lithographyLearn the basics of plate lithography, including how to prepare and draw on an aluminium lithographic plate. Use litho crayons and tusche washes to draw your image, etch the drawn plate and prepare the paper for printing. Develop the skills to print a small edition using a direct lithographic press.

relief Printing Investigate the bold and graphic nature of relief printing. Learn how to prepare blocks and carve images; to print single-colour lino blocks, multi-colour reduction lino blocks and multi-colour wood blocks utilising professional registration techniques. Experiment with Japanese papers and hand colouring techniques. Learn how to use APW’s antique Columbian and Albion relief presses to print your own limited edition prints.
