Overview The Women’s Australia Open championship is a flagship event for Golf Australia and remains a key marketing tool for promoting the sport to Australians. In 2014 the event showcased a field comparable with the biggest female events worldwide, which resulted in unprecedented coverage across all media outlets, with record domestic ratings on ABC and impressive international TV coverage. The field comprised 5 of the top 10 players and 4 former world number 1’s, competing for the increased prize money of USD $1.2 million, which put into context surpasses the Australian Masters, Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship on the men’s circuit, further underlining the events status as one of Australian golf’s flagship events.

Economic Impact Summary The economic activity, generated through visitation and corporate support was stronger than ever in 2014. Based on evaluation of the 2014 event, Golf Australia has estimated the economic impact of the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open held in Adelaide in 2016 to be $7.819 million. This figure has been independently calculated using methodology from the Dept. of Infrastructure and Regional Development and evaluates the money spent on travel, accommodation, transit, food & beverage and discretionary spend during the time spent in the host city.

Brand - TV Audience/ Exposure Repucom International is commissioned to independently evaluate the media value of the event to the host State. In 2013 the 100% Media Equivalency figure was $2,180,517. Domestic Coverage The event is broadcast across Australia through ABC TV with a peak audience of 688,000 during the final round. It also receives significant coverage through Golf Australia’s national website network, which boasts 4.28m annual user sessions, and a social media community of 60,7000

Corporate Involvement – World’s Best Brands Corporate support is a vital component of the event and Golf Australia is proud of the long term involvement of the world’s leading brands including: State Government Investment $1.2m per annum for a term of 3 years.

Golf Australia is proud of the evolution of the Women’s Australian Open. Coming from being the national title with little international participation, modest media interest, a small number of spectators and a limited prize pool, the championship s has grown to become one of the marquee female only sporting events in Australia. Australia’s national title in 2014 showcased a field comparable with the biggest female events worldwide, which resulted in unprecedented coverage across all media outlets, with record domestic ratings on ABC and impressive international TV coverage (details p.10). The economic activity, generated through visitation and corporate support was stronger than ever. Golf Australia has estimated the economic impact of the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open held in Adelaide in 2016 to be $7,819million (details p.3) The event again demonstrated social responsibility, raising over $ 80,000 for charities, as well as staging Pro Am and clinic opportunities for handicapped persons. Golf Australia is looking forward to continue building on the great tradition of the event, an important inspiration for golfers of all ages, in particular females.

TOURNAMENT REPORT

Day One

World Number 2 Norwegian Suzann Pettersen posted a 6-under par 66 to take a one shot lead from the first round. Pettersen made the most of the excellent morning conditions, shooting nine birdies and three bogeys on the way to the lead over a group of four players tied in second place. “I felt like I played good and gave myself a lot of good chances, putted, for the most part, well. It was a little bit of a mixture but 66 opening round, I'm very, very happy,” Pettersen said.

Americans Jessica Korda and Jaclyn Sweeney, Korean Hee Young Park and France’s Marion Ricordeau all posted 5-under par 67s to be tied in second place.

Sarah-Jane Smith and amateur Minjee Lee are the leading Australians at 4-under par. Australia’s Karrie Webb finished at 1-under par 71.

Day Two

Swede Caroline Hedwall had a hole-in-one and an eagle on her way to the top of the leaderboard on day two.

Swede Anna Nordqvist had the round of the day, firing a course-record eight-under-par 64 to move into a share of fourth position at 8-under-par with Kiwi sensation Lydia Ko and England’s Holly Clyburn.

Hedwell recorded her fourth career hole-in-one, on the par 3, 16th when she holed a “soft” seven iron.

On her ace, the Swede said “Yesterday I hit a full 7-iron over the green and it was basically the same yardage today, so I hit a soft one and it covered the pin all the way and then I just saw it bounce once and hit the pin. But I didn't see it go in.”

For current Australian Amateur champion, Lee, who finished runner-up at the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters, continues her excellent recent form.

“Yeah, I'm in good form. I'm confident in my game and I'm playing good.”

The cut was made at even-par and 76 players will be vying for their share of the $US1.2million purse.

Day Three Korean Chella Choi blasted a red hot course-record 10-under par 62 in the third round. Choi, who was tied for the lead with Lee at 13-under par, equalled the individual low round record at the tournament set by Lydia Ko in 2013. She played the back nine in 6-under-par and had eagles on the 8th and 18th holes.

For Australian Amateur champion Lee it was a 4-under par 68 she described as a “mission” and booked her spot in the final group for the second consecutive week

When asked about the pressure of co-leading a professional tournament, Lee said she was “cruisy” on the course.

Chasing Choi and Lee is Kiwi World Number 4 Lydia Ko who moved into outright third place with a 3-under par 69 to be two strokes behind the leading pair at 11-under par. Norwegian Suzann Pettersen finished with an even-par 72 to drop to fourth place at 10-under.

Australian Karrie Webb shot a 4-under par 68 to move to 8-under par, five strokes behind the leaders. A total of 12 players were within four strokes of the lead.

Day Four

Australia’s Karrie Webb held on to clinch a fifth ISPS HANDA Women’s Australian Open title with a one stroke victory.

The 39 year-old Queenslander finished at 12-under par with a final round 4-under par 68 to beat Korean Chella Choi who carded a 2-over par 74. “I feel very fortunate to have won today. But I liked my chances at the start of the day because of the wind picking up. If we had another day like we had the first three days, I probably was a little too far back to have a chance, so I was thankful for the weather changing and I played as good as I have in a very long time,” Webb said.

The victory was Webb’s 52nd professional title and comes with a US$180,000 winner’s cheque.

For overnight co-leader Choi, a drive out-of-bounds on the second hole caused trouble early in the round.

“I went out of bounds on the right hand side and that was a really big problem for me. It was a hard game today. I didn’t like that part but Karrie played so good today,” Choi said.

On her first trip to Australia, American Paula Creamer posted a final round 4-under par 68 to share third place with Kiwi Lydia Ko and France’s Karine Icher at 10-under par.

Australian Amateur champion Minjee Lee finished in a tie for 11th place as the leading amateur after slipping to a final round 78 in the windy conditions but Webb heaped praise on the 17-year old from Perth.

“She's got more talent in her little finger than I ever did at 17. She should hold her head up high. She's played very well the last two weeks, probably the best out of anyone consistently the last two weeks. She should be really proud of herself. You'll definitely see a lot more of her,” Webb said.

The inaugural Race to the CME Globe will kick off the week of January 20, 2014 at the season-opening Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic and be followed by the ISPS HANDA Women’s Australian Open.

Players will accumulate points at each official LPGA event from the Bahamas through the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Presented by Banamex in November.

The Race to the CME Globe will then come to an exciting conclusion on Sunday at the newly renamed CME Group Tour Championship.

Two big purses and two big winner’s payouts will be on the line during the final day of the CME Group Tour Championship. The winner of the CME Group Tour Championship will take home a $500,000 first-place prize, while the player who has accumulated the most points in the season-long points competition will be announced as the Race to the CME Globe champion with a $1 million unofficial money payout – the largest in all of women’s golf.

For all LPGA events with a cut, points will be awarded to LPGA members who make the cut. For all events without a cut (except for the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Presented by Banamex), points will be awarded to members who finish among the top 40 and ties. And for the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Presented by Banamex, points will be awarded to members who finish in the top 20 and ties.

The field at the $2 million CME Group Tour Championship will consist of the following: the top 72 players on the Race to the CME Globe Points Standings at the conclusion of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Presented by Banamex, any LPGA member – not otherwise qualified – with at least one official LPGA win during the season and any non-member with at least one official LPGA win during the year. Points will then be reset for the CME Group Tour Championship to ensure that the points race will be won at the season-ending tournament. Reset Points will give top yearly performers an advantage but not guarantee victory. The points that a player earns at the CME Group Tour Championship will be added to her Reset Points, and the player with the highest points total will be named the winner of the Race to the CME Globe.

In a superb week, the 2014 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open again delivered the world’s best golfers on one of Melbourne’s internationally renowned sandbelt courses to compete for Australia’s national title and the Patricia Bridges Bowl.

This historic occasion saw the championship return to Victoria Golf Club – host of the inaugural event in 1974 - for the first time in nearly 30 years. With amateur star Minjee Lee and rising star Cheyenne Woods making national headlines in the preceding weeks, the ISPS HANDA Women’s Australian Open captured national and international attention as the second event of the year on the US LPGA Tour and the penultimate event of the Australian Ladies Professional Golf season.

Returning to Melbourne in 2014, the host club gave golf and sport fans from Victoria and beyond the opportunity to experience one of Australia’s highest-ranked courses, in Australia’s most famous group of golf clubs – the Sandbelt. Ideally situated 30 minutes from the city and surrounded by popular bayside surburbs, Victoria Golf Club again proved its class as a major championship venue.

Complementing the outstanding facilities were the appearances of half of the world’s top ten players – a true credit to the attraction Melbourne and this championship provides to competitors from all over the world.

World Number 2 Suzann Pettersen, World Number 3 Stacy Lewis, Word Number 4 Lydia Ko, World Number 8 Karrie Webb and World Number 9 Lexi Thompson headlined the star attractions as the LPGA Tour kicked off its Asia-Pacific swing through Melbourne, Thailand and Singapore.

With a week of exhilarating golf in store, the championship lived up to every element of having “the world’s best” on show.
