Prem studied in classtwo He went to themunicipal school near hishouse His teacher wasalways bubbling with newideas

One day she asked thechildren to find and fill anempty matchbox
ldquoFill the matchbox withas many different thingsas you can over oneweek The one who packsin the most number ofdifferent things will get aprize next weekrdquo

Prem liked the idea
At home Prem tried toput his eraser and pencilsharpener in thematchbox He managedto fit in only one They were toobig
This made him thinkWhat are the things I canput in

While he was doing his homework the lead from Prems pencil broke and fell off
He put the piece in his matchbox
After sharpening his pencil he put a small wood shaving in his matchbox
Prem started looking carefully for tiny things

He could smell the pohahis mother was cooking
In the kitchen he found asmall mustard seed acumin seed and a seedof a red chilli He putthem in along with agrain each of sugar riceand wheat
He added grains ofmaize millet green gramand other pulses

The next day he put in asmall rubber band apiece of wool one strandof hair and a piece ofthread
Prem now kept lookedfor tiny teeny-weenythings
The next day he added arose thorn a sunflower petal a small twig a tea leaf atamarind leaf and a small stone

There was still some space in thematchbox
So Prem put in a small piece of paper apin a needle a bead a nail and a smallbutton
The matchbox was still not full
On the last day of the week Prem put ina lemon seed an orange seed and apumpkin seed Now the matchbox waspacked It couldnrsquot hold any more

At school each childcounted the number ofthings stuffed in his orher matchbox
Some children hadcollected fifty things Onechild had managed tostuff over a hundredthings

When it was Premrsquos turnhe shook his matchbox inthe air There was not asound because it wasstuffed fully When Prem emptied hismatchbox everyone wassurprised

He had stuffed over a hundred-and-fifty littlethings in his matchboxNo one had come evenclose to him
So Prem won a new boxof crayons
