The Tale of the ToiletAuthor Veena PrasadIllustrator Greystroke

Itrsquos a big job itrsquos number onepriority and number two is prettyimportant too because you cannever ignore naturersquos call So whenyou gotta go you gotta go

Some people can do this businessinside their houses some have togo outside Some pour water afteritrsquos done others need not Itrsquosdifferent in different parts of theworld just as it was different atdifferent times in history

2

Toilets of the past

A very long time ago more than 3000 years ago the people of Indus Valley had beautiful houses with toilets builtinside them People could finish their business in privacy and pour a bucket of water which would flush the wastedown a drain This way they managed to keep their houses and streets clean

3

The Indus Valley situated in present day Pakistan and India is one of thethree oldest civilizations that we know of the other two being Ancient Egyptand Mesopotamia From what we can see of the ruins today the people ofIndus Valley had great building skills were good at making metal andceramic products and planned their city-wide drainage systems veryelaborately

4

Around the same time similar toilet arrangements were present in otherparts of the world Homes in Egypt and Babylonia had toilets built in andthe ruins in Skara Brae in Scotland and the Minoan Crete in theMediterranean show plenty of pipes leading out of what definitely seemslike a toilet inside a house

A little later about 2000 years ago in Rome people used public toilets Along slab of stone had keyhole-shaped cuts at intervals People would sit onthese openings and do their toilet business while having a friendly chat withthe person next to them I told you it was a ldquopublicrdquo toilet

5

How did they clean themselves doyou wonder After I tell you youmight wish you had neverwondered

They took a long stick that had asponge attached to one end anddipped the sponge into water andthen used it to wipe theirbacksides After they felt cleanthey simply handed the stick overto their neighbour who dipped itin water and used it again Let megive you a friendly tip here ndash if youever find yourself in this placemake sure you pick the very firstseat

6

Not everyone had to poop in public in Rome If you were super-rich youwould have a chamber pot at home into which you would do your businessOnce done you would simply empty the contents onto the street outsideAnd if someone happened to walk by at the time well too bad for them

About 500 years ago Queen Elizabeth of England had a toilet constructedinside her house It had a pipe leading out into a sewage pit outside Butshe never used it much because the stench from the sewer filled the toiletand she could not even breathe So back to the chamber pot she went

7

Toilets of the presentToilets these days donrsquot stink How did they achieve that

In 1775 the English inventor Alexander Cumming figured out a way Insteadof using a straight pipe to connect the toilet to the sewage line he made itS-shaped This made sure that while poop and pee and water can go downthe drain no smell can come back up Have you noticed that a little water

always stays in the toilet even after flushing This is what creates the sealand prevents the foul smell from entering the room through the drain

8

9

Just like olden times differentparts of the world today havedifferent kinds of toilets

Some places donrsquot have toilets atall Some toilets are made forsitting some are made forsquatting Some have a bucketwith water for flushing othershave a tank filled with water and ahandle that releases the waterSome toilets have paper to wipethe backside some have a tap or abucket of water to wash up

10

There are some toilets that donrsquot use water at all Like the ones on a planeWith all the turbulence you certainly donrsquot want any water in the toiletbowl The waste is removed by a powerful vacuum and stored in a tankbelow After the plane lands the waste is disposed of

There are also waterless toilets on the ground They were designed andbuilt for places without easy access to water such as remote villages inTamil Nadu and Maharashtra They have been working well so wouldnrsquot itbe a good idea to have such toilets everywhere Because the less water weuse and the less sewage we create the better for the planet right

11

Toilets of the future

How do you make a waterlesstoilet

The first step is to make sure thatyou donrsquot let the urine and thefaeces mix No itrsquos not as gross asit sounds ndash it just needs the pot tobe designed in a clever way Likehaving a sloping bamboo mat actas a sieve that will allow the wastewater to pass through but canhold the poop and send it to adifferent pit

12

Since urine by itself is not harmful (itrsquos only the bacteria that collect on openurine that cause the smell and the hazard) it can be safely let into theground or put to use Herersquos how Hydrogen can be separated from theurine and used to fuel a generator

Urine also has nitrogen phosphorus and potassium that are greatingredients for fertilizers

Now that urine is taken care of what do we do with the solid waste Well if it is properly mixed with ash and grass and allowed to rest in a pitmillions of bacteria will break it down into perfectly useful compost foragriculture

13

These toilets will help us build a world where there is no wasteInstead it is turned into somethingof use

If all houses in a city have suchtoilets no sewage comes out of them no expensive sewagetreatment plants are necessaryand no sewage will flow throughthe drains into lakes and riversWhat a great future for everyone
