Jackson said: “Ourcore modelstrategyisabout internationalmulti-regionalsilhouettes.Ratherthan saywe’regoingto design itall n Europe orChina, we lookforthe biggest
opportunity. So withthe C6, the biggestopportunityforusishereinChina.Hencewedeveloped itin the Shanghaidesign studio.

Dogged bycontroversyoverthe pastdecade, the famousNorfolk sportscar maker’s aura had beenseverelydented.
The sackingof previous boss DanyBahar, whose boldplansincludedfiveconceptsthatnever madeitto production,wasfollowed bylegal actions thatfurthertarnished Lotus.
And despite newMalaysian ownerDRB-HICOMinvesting
£100million toget the companybackon track, the reality was thatLotus still had lossesof nearly£80m fortheyear 2013-14 alongside an ageing and limited modelline-up.
Itwas worse still, as Gales pointsout: “We had 1,200workers making just1,200 cars a year. You don’tneed1,200people tomake 1,200 cars.”Gales knew Lotusneeded arealitycheckto survive before itcouldprosper, and thatmeant toughdecisions. He cutthe workforce by261 jobsattheend of2014 – a movehe says saved thebrand.
“Withoutthose toughjob cuts and majorcostsavingsacrossthe business, Lotuswould notbe here today,”explains Gales.“Peoplewanted toturn Lotus into aBritish version of Ferrarior Porsche;thatwas rubbish.We decided togo backto ourroots. Lotusisa maker of lightweightsports cars. Ourcarsfeel differentto any othersports car; theyare likean extensionof yourbody.”
Thecostsavings started instantlywith Gales setting upa ‘lightweightlaboratory’; he puteverycomponentused inbuildinga Lotus on a largetable, and attached price andweighttags,with theaimof reducingboth.Manyparts werere-engineered eitherinternallyor byLotus suppliers, andsavings offiveto 10 percent weremade; notonlydidthiscutlosses, itallowed Galesto pass savingson to customers– the price of the entry-levelElise fellto under£30,000.
No stone wasleft unturned, from securingtougherdealswithsuppliers toswitchingto economyclass forexecutivetravel. Gales alsopinpointed a lackofdealersgloballyas amajorweakness: “You need good dealers tosell cars andthere were manykeycitieswhere we weren’trepresented.”
In two yearsGales hasincreased Lotus’sdealernetwork from 137 toover200, andsays: “Ourdealershave investedheavilyin the business astheybelieveinLotus.”He acceptsdealersneed newproducts, somethingLotushasbeen short
of recently, butstresses: “We need togenerate cashflow topayfornew models; the businesshas tobe sustainable.”
Inthe shortterm Gales says thatthe newmodelswill bespecialeditionderivati
