1913A desire to complete his University education

has brought George Hoke, senior law student, back to school this fall after a "vacation" of 20years .

Hoke, who was an honor student in the juniorlaw class of 1913, returned to Norman to finishwork for a law degree though he has alreadybeen admitted to the bar and practiced law .

Recalling the University as it was in the pre-wardays, Hoke believes that school spirit and enthu-siasm, as demonstrated now, wouldn't have achance if compared with the 1913 variety, thatthe professors seem less formal and academic, andthat the rules for law school political campaign-ing remain unchanged .

"As I remember it, there was a lot of pep andschool spirit . Before every football game, bonfires, speeches and parades were held, and almost everystudent turned out . Fred Capshaw, Buster Am-brister and Claude Reeds were the team celeb-rities ."

Hoke also remembers when class fights wereevents to be looked forward to by everybody, in-cluding the clothing stores .

"The freshmen and the sophomores lined upon opposite sides of the oval with wires, chainsand ropes . The object was to tie the other sidedown . It went on all night, and going to classthe next day you could see them asleep and stilltied to a tree or post."

This business of holding hands with co-eds inpublic, Hoke says, was taboo in 1913 .

"I imagine they would have been laughed offthe campus ."Campus political battles were then carried on

mainly along the lines of the fraternity menagainst the non-fraternity group . In the lawschool, then located in the basement of the oldEducation building, the situation was different. Iremember that the quickest way for any candi-date for class election to defeat himself was tocampaign in his own behalf. The lawyers all hadtheir individual political ideas."

In Hoke's day, 4-inch mustaches were culti-vated by the older men, and women's hats wereadorned with imitation birds and flowers . TheUniversity campus then contained four or fivebuildings and was surrounded by farm land .

All the fraternity houses were on the north sideof the campus, except the Kappa Alpha house ."The K. A .'s were located in a slight hollow onthe east side of the campus, and everyone referredto the place as the `valley of the moon,' " Hokesaid .

After leaving school here in 1913, Hoke servedon the Mexican border, and served overseas dur-ing the World war . He practiced law and was amember of the state legislature from Pawneecounty in 1925, during which time he aided inthe passage of a bill that released funds for theconstruction of the University residential halls .Hoke and his family have established residence

at 906 South Flood avenue.-From the NormanTranscript.

Heserved in the aviation branch of the army duringthe World war and when the armistice wassigned he came back to Tulsa to work as a phar-macist in the Wm. Penn Drug store . After success-ful service in this drug store he bought the Col-lege Pharmacy and, putting his system into prac-tice, he built a remarkable business success in hisown drug store . So successful was he that inAugust, 1932, he took over the Win . Penn Drugstore from the Credit Men's association and beganto operate it as he had operated the CollegePharmacy with the result that the prescriptionbusiness at this drug store has tripled since hepurchased the store."
