CHECKYOUR TYRE PRESSURE

Tyre pressures on a 4WD are hugely important, especially if you are planning to go off-road these holidays. Over or under inflated tyres will wear faster and increase the risk of damage, so it pays to check and adjust your tyre pressures to suit the terrain.

Before you load up and head off-road these holidays, make sure to pack some bare essentials:- A tyre deflator with in-built pressure gauge- A 12V air compressor- A tyre repair kit

In general, heading off-road will mean reducing your tyre pressures – how much depends on a number of factors. A general guide is to start at about 30% lower than your highway pressure, and work your way down to a safe and functional pressure.The idea is to increase the footprint of your tyre to increase traction, and to give your tyres some give so that they form around objects and not ride high on them – giving increased traction and comfort. A larger footprint also reduces your vehicles impact on the terrain and limits sinking into softer terrain. The softer the terrain, the lower the pressure – but remember to also lower your speed, especially on cornering. Go too low on pressure and you run the risk of popping the bead off the rim.… and don’t forget to pump the tyres back up when you hit harder terrain!

• Replacewithanewsplitpinandensurethelegs are bent around the axle nut so it won’t fall out.
