 Chapter 1: Understanding the  AutoCAD 2007  Interface After starting AutoCAD 2007 you face a page, which is your design work space. It contains the elements that you will use to create your designs & receive information about them. The following illustration shows the main parts of  the AutoCAD 2007 window. Fig1.1 : Typical  layout of  the AutoCAD 2007 screen.  1. Title Bar Placed at the top of  the window this shows the name of  the program AutoCAD 2004. The name of  the current drawing (or Drawing 1.dwg, if  the current drawing has not been saved) appears in the Title Bar of  the drawing area or document window. If  the drawing window has been maximized,  the name of  the drawing appears in the main Title Bar. 2. Menu Bar Located below the Title Bar, it contains the default AutoCAD menus. Menus are defined by menu files that you can modify or design on your own.

    1. TitleBar

    PlacedatthetopofthewindowthisshowsthenameoftheprogramAutoCAD2004.Thenameofthecurrentdrawing(orDrawing1.dwg,ifthecurrentdrawinghasnotbeensaved)appearsintheTitleBarofthedrawingareaordocumentwindow.Ifthedrawingwindowhasbeenmaximized,thenameofthedrawingappearsinthemainTitleBar.

    2.MenuBar

    LocatedbelowtheTitleBar,itcontainsthedefaultAutoCADmenus.Menusaredefinedbymenufilesthatyoucanmodifyordesignonyourown.

  • 3.Toolbars

    AnumberoftoolbarsappearonthescreenbelowtheInlineBar.CommandscanbeactivatedbyclickingthebuttonsonthevariousToolbars.AppearanceofvariousToolbarsisoptionalandtheirpositioncanbeshifted.ThemostcommonToolbarsthatappearbydefaultincludethefollowing:

    a.StandardToolbars

    Containsfrequentlyusedbuttons,suchasRedo,Undo,ZoomaswellasMicrosoftOfficestandardButtonssuchasOpen,Save,Cut,Copy,andPasteetc.

    b.ObjectPropertiesToolbars

    Itcontainstwotoolbars.OneisLayerstoolbarandanotherisPropertiestoolbar.Itcreatesnewlayersandmanageslayers.Setsobjectpropertiessuchascolor,linetypeandlineweight.

    c.DrawandModifyToolbars

    Provideaccesstocommondrawandmodifycommands.ThedrawandModifytoolbarsaredisplayedwhenyoustartAutoCAD.Thesetoolbarsaredockedontheleftandrightsideofthewindow.Youcaneasilymovetoolbarsandturnthemonandoff.

    4.DrawingArea

    Displaysdrawings.Thedrawingareasizevaries,dependingonthesizeoftheAutoCADwindowandonthenumberotherelements(suchastoolbarsanddialogboxes)thataredisplayed.Thiscontainsthefollowingmainfeatures:

    a.CrosshairsorCursor

    Identifiespickanddrawingpointswithinthedrawingarea.Usethecrosshairs/coursor,whicharecontrolledbyyourpointingdevice,tolocatepointsandselectanddrawobjects.

    b.UserCoordinateSystem(UCS)icon

    Showstheorientationofthedrawing.AutoCADdrawingsaresuperimposedonaninvisiblegrid,orcoordinatesystem.CoordinatesystemsarebasedonX,YandZ(or3D)

  • coordinates.AutoCADhasaFixedworldcoordinatesystem(WCS)andamovableusercoordinatesystem(UCS).TohelpyouvisualizeUCSlocationandorientation,aUCSiconisdisplayedinthelowerleftcornerofthedrawingarea.

    c.ModelTabandLayoutTabs

    Switchyourdrawingbetweenmodel(drawing)spaceandpaper(layout)space.Yougenerallycreateyourdrawingsinmodelspaceandthencreatelayoutstoplotandprintyourdrawinginpaperspaces.

    5.CommandWindow

    Displayspromptsandmessages.InAutoCAD,youstartcommandsinoneofthreeways:

    Chooseanitemformatmenuorashortcutmenu, Clickabuttononatoolbar, Enterthecommandonthecommandline.

    However,evenifyouchoosecommandsfrommenusandtoolbars,AutoCADmaydisplaycommandpromptsandthecommandhistory(pressF2buttononkeyboard)inacommandwindow.

    6.StatusBar

    Displaysthecursorcoordinatesinthelowerleftcorner.Thestatusbaralsocontainsbuttonsthatyoucanusetoturnoncommondrawingaids.Theseinclude:

    SNAP(snapmodeF9)

    ORTHO(orthomodeF8)

    OSNAP(objectsnapsF3)

    LWT(lineweightdisplay)

    GRID(drawinggridF7)

    POLAR(polartrackingF10)

    OTRACK(objectsnapstrackingF11)

    MODEL(model/paperspacetoggle)
