is capable of programming the flash memory of control units. This is particularly necessary when an ECU is replaced with a new blankunprogrammed ECU.

Additionally, vehicle OEMs often release updated software for ECUs toimprove their functionality. programmes an ECU with thecorrect and most up-to-date version of the ECU software. It will nevercopy software from a control unit to another, as this method does notguarantee the correct functionality of a new control unit.

Coding is the process whereby a programmed ECU is configured with extraparameters to correspond to the exact vehicle specification. For example,an airbag module needs to be coded so that it knows which side of the carthe driver’s seat is positioned. will always code a control modulewith the correct data for the fitted hardware. It will never 'best match'coding data, nor will it copy it from a similar control unit.

Step by step proceduresto automatically adaptkeys to both theimmobiliser and centrallocking system of thevehicle. With theexception of Peugeot,Citroën and VAGvehicles, there are noneed for PIN codes!

CIP updates provide software revisions for common problems, knownsoftware errors and vehicle systems functional improvements. Furthermore,

CIP incorporates the following functionality:· Retrofit / Conversions· Performance Tunes

Programming codingin one with CIP

is the only aftermarket tool to offer Coding Individualisation andProgramming (CIP) software.

Above and beyond the dealer, allows a higher level of modularity with thepossibility to carry out targeted work on a particular vehicle control unit orsubsystem - resulting in faster repair and control unit replacement capabilities.

The can programme all modules on LAND ROVER vehicles from '98model year onwards. Software files are constantly updated to keep up with fixesfrom LAND ROVER. Most new powertrain and body control modules requireprogramming before they will work on the vehicle. The can alsoprogramme keys and alarm remotes for all LAND ROVER models.

is the first and only aftermarket vehicle diagnostic tool capable of opticalprogramming on MOST (Media Orientated Systems Transport) compatible vehicles.

Developed in-house, the ' Optical Interface' can significantly reduceprogramming time on vehicles fitted with a MOST port.

BMW software can implement a Retrofitting or conversion by individualrequest, allowing access to a higher level of individualisations and optionalequipment upgrades on a model to model basis.

As an example, is the single only tool incorporating a coding procedure forpairing compatible aftermarket Audio Video and Bluetooth vehicle equipment to theBMW Professional Radio and Navigation systems.

offers unparalleled capabilities in configuring imported cars to conform totransport regulations in the country of destination.Available configurations are as follows:

· Language change· Instrument cluster conversion· Daytime running lights· Fog lamps· Maintenance intervals· Marker lights· Engine tune configuration· Radio frequency conversions

allows a garage to alter Car Configuration Files to suit customers’ needs.Alarm, lighting and other options can be changed on all vehicles. Certainconfiguration options on the are not available on the dealer tools, allowing your customers greater freedom to personalise their vehicles.

allows the vehicle's configuration to be changed for the fitting ofaccessories such as tow bars and fog lights. The vehicles’s configuration can also bechanged to allow for conversions. For example cruise control can be added toDiscovery IIIs or self-levelling suspension can be removed from Discovery IIs.

provides diagnostic and calibration functions that exceed the dealer tool.Fault code reading, dynamic data, component activation and standard heightcalibration is available for all LAND ROVER models equipped with air suspension. For Discovery III, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport there is the additional ‘heightlowering’ function which can lower the vehicles standard ride height at the touchof a button.

SCN Coding Function

Full variant coding

Special Functions

Trial substitution

Nick Cragg, SNS Liverpool Ltd, Liverpool, UK

The MERCEDES-BENZ tool provides special functions which the dealertool does not. Examples of these include TV activation and air bag unlockingfunctions.

TVs by default, are restricted from being viewed whilst the car is in motion. Using this limitation can be removed on a number of vehicles. Similarly, an

airbag which is normally interlocked to a vehicle, can be unlocked to allow codingto be changed or the airbag fitted to another vehicle.

Injector coding / classification is an important function on theMERCEDES-BENZ software. This function will allow the user to replace theinjectors for new and used parts and more importantly, the ECU will know theexact specification of the injector fitted. This process is critical as the IMA code isused by the controller to determine the injector fitted, which in turn determineshow the fuel is delivered.

The WSP (Immobiliser) module has a unique method of coding the keys. This methodrequires the new key to be put in the ignition then a random generated number isdisplayed on and the correct code is then entered using . Allvehicles fitted with a WSP will require this method to code new keys

PORSCHE has full transponder key and key fob programming capability.New immobiliser modules can also be coded to the vehicle. Key and remotereprogramming can also be performed, eliminating the requirement to replace thethe keys when replacing an alarm module.

Another feature is Control Module Substitution. This allows the user to trial a modulefrom a donor car without locking it to the problem vehicle.

Vehicle Handover is the process that initialises modules from their “InTransportation” state. The procedure is performed when new vehicles aredelivered to customers and also after the replacement of certain ECUs.

A control module can be configured to function differently for various vehicleconfigurations. Examples include the language setting on the instrument cluster, roof operation from the key remote or the configuration of daytime running lamps. All new control modules need to be coded when first fitted to a vehicle.will determine the correct coding data based on the hardware fitted and the vehiclespecification.

Many control modules are flash programmable. As part of on-going support, vehiclemanufacturers periodically release updated software, often to overcome runningissues. With PORSCHE, any workshop is in a position to carry out theseupdates as is the only aftermarket diagnostic tool capable of full FlashProgramming.

Mick Clare, Service Manager, Paragon, East Sussex, UKInjector coding andclassification

Security SystemProgramming

offers full variant coding on all modules. This gives users the ability toperform variant coding on any control module. Any new or existing controlmodules, can be coded to suit the options or requirements of that specific car.Retrofitting of components is also possible.

SCN coding is used by an increasing number of ECU's as the method for coding.SCN coding replaces the old method of multiple options, where the user selectsand edits each coding option. SCN coding codes the control module withpredefined coding based on the VIN and part number.

has an SCN Coding fuction built-in, enabling users to code allthe latest control modules on MERCEDES-BENZ vehicles.

Using this feature, the coding options are determined from the oldcontrol unit. The new unit is then coded with the correct options.users do not need to manually set all of the coding options.

Vehicles that are fitted with Electric Parking Brake systems require a diagnosticroutine to replace basic service items such as brake pads. Simple to use guidedfunctions on the step the user through the service process.

Calibration is necessary after any routine service work of the suspensionsystems. is capable of calibrating the suspension systems.

New vehicles are now subject to tight emission laws and regulations which requirethe vehicles to monitor and flag any related issues of the way in which a car's engineis running. Once reset, the Readiness Codes must then be reinitialised, requiring thecar to put through an extensive list of specific driving conditions. helps theuser to sequentially work through each step, ensuring all conditions are met plus, willhighlight any potential problem areas.

JAGUAR allows the user to carry out key and remote programming orreplacement on all JAGUAR vehicles. gives the operator the ability toquickly substitute any control module involved in the security system from anothercar; for example engine control modules, instrument clusters, body modules anddoor modules. will then perform an “Immobilisation Reset”, aligningthe modules and allowing the engine to start. Substituted modules can then gostraight back to their original vehicle if required.

JAGUAR has complete flash programming capability. JAGUAR frequentlyrelease updated tune files and gearbox programs. Any workshop offeringcomprehensive servicing of JAGUAR vehicles needs this functionality. On X150 (XK)& X250 (XF) chassis, all modules are flash programmable, also allows therestoration of configuration data, to restore a corrupt vehicle to the specification itleft the factory.

Many control modules contain information relating to the configuration andspecification of the vehicle to which they are fitted. Modifying this data canenable or disable the functionality of particular components. Operations such asreplacing electronic control units due to failure, or modifications to the vehiclesuch as fitting Bluetooth or an ipod interface are all possible usingcomprehensive coverage.

Suspension system problems are common on JAGUAR XJ’s. Workshops equippedwith an JAGUAR are in prime position to take on any work involvingdiagnosing, reconfiguring or calibrating air suspension systems.

In order to replace rear brake pads or other components on JAGUARS fitted withan Electronic Parking Brake, a diagnostic tool such as is required to resetthe motor to the service position, moving the pads right back away from the disc.

TVs, by default, are restricted from being viewed whilst the car is in motion. Thislimitation can be removed on various vehicles using the specific TVfunction.

There are a growing number of vehicles where servicing is no longer a simpleprocedure. All variants are now covered by VAG.

A guided function on aids the user in adjusting the pump timing ofdiesel engines. Clear instructions are provided to time the pumps, taking intoaccount the engine's current operating conditions.

Associated diagnosis and repair instructions are included for a variety of faultcodes. provides the user with highlighted tests to work through, helping to reduce the time spent rectifying a fault.

Understanding the large number of coding options available is always going to bea difficult task. Via the ‘Descriptive Coding’ feature on the , the availableoptions are identified and presented in an ‘easy-to-use’ fashion, permitting theuser to configure the car quickly and easily.

Vehicles requiring language changes can be easily adapted to a new languageusing the . The 'Language Change' function also providesusers with the latest software versions to recover DIM (Driver Information Module)hardware issues. Additionally, language changes are available in languages notavailable from VOLVO, such as Polish.

Engine Control Module (ECM) and Electronic Throttle Modules (ETM) often needrefreshing with the latest software to overcome running issues or 'check engine'light situations. These upgrades can be requested and then downloaded throughthe website.

Another frequent issue that can easily resolve through softwareupgrades is harsh up-shift and down-shift problems which produce drivabilityissues. Using the , most problems can be easily resolved and eradicatedthrough software upgrades.

For all upgrades, the unit has an in-built test function that willdetermine and notify the user if upgrades are required and will provide theoption for the user to programme the control module.

With large touch screen buttons and an extensive on screen help menu, thetool is easy to use. The speed at which processes information

is also of note when compared to other diagnostic tools.

This software feature gives users the ability to select the parameters theywish to view, giving increased flexibility for users. They can record and playbackthe chosen parameters to pinpoint a problem more precisely.

has an enhanced quick test to allow multiplex network testing. Thisenables the user to view any modules that are fitted to the multiplex networks sothat modules with incorrect programming or those that have faults present, canthen be quickly identified.

provides comprehensive BSi and UCH module coverage includingconfigurations and fault history. This allows independent garages to set up thesecritical modules and individually analyse each element of the module.

This extracts the extended information stored in the module at the time the faultoccurred.  The stored information is reported alongside the live data for easy analysisand comparison.
