Automotive Engineering 2018 - 2019

For the future you want

Edinburgh College is a leading provider of automotive and mechanical engineering. Automotive programmes on offer range from classic vehicle restoration, vehicle accident repair, transport maintenance and advanced vehicle diagnostics. Our students learn about the design, manufacture, operation and repair of a wide range of vehicles. The purpose‑built workshops and lecture rooms in the Sighthill and Midlothian campuses provide students with all the necessary resources to engage fully in their chosen programmes of study.

As well as our full-time courses listed in this prospectus, we offer modern apprenticeship programmes in light vehicle, heavy vehicle, paint & body repair and parts. Apprentice training

programmes enable individuals, already employed within the motor industry to engage in knowledge and competence based learning which builds towards an SVQ 3 modern apprenticeship qualification. Many of our former students have progressed into senior roles as master technicians and service managers.

We offer bespoke training to the automotive industry on subjects as varied as hybrid/electric vehicle maintenance, air-conditioning (F-Gas), hydraulics & pneumatics and electrical diagnostics. So, whether you are a newly qualified technician, an apprentice, or have worked in the industry for many years, our courses will give you the innovative skills to place you ahead of the competition.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

FACILITIES

We have a partnership with manufacturing giants Nissan, Mitsubishi and SEStran to place us at the forefront of technology with our own fleet of electric vehicles. In addition, the college has teamed up with Transport Scotland and The Energy Savings Trust to expand electric charge point provision in our local areas. This presents fantastic opportunities throughout your training to ensure you are kept up-to-date with technology from sector leading manufacturers.

Our purpose-built automotive workshops include a fully equipped industry standard paint spray booth and up-to-date diagnostic tooling. Our strong partnerships with the automotive industry, ensures we continue to invest in our workforce and facilities to meet the demands of the modern industry.

AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING

Stefano, a Vehicle Painting apprentice at the college, was selected as the winner ahead of competitors from across the UK.

Stefano, who works for DSL Autos, qualified for the final after competing against fellow apprentices from across the UK at a competition event in London. A panel of experts then compared Stefano’s work against the other four finalists before declaring him the winner.

He received his prize at the competition awards ceremony in the Hilton Birmingham Metropole in Birmingham.

Stefano said: “The whole thing is pretty surreal! When I compared myself to who I was up against for the award I have to say that I wasn’t feeling very confident but I guess I had nothing to lose so I just relaxed and enjoyed myself. When I saw my name and picture come up on the screen I couldn’t believe it. Huge thanks to my employers DSL Autos and to all the lecturers at Edinburgh College. Having their support throughout the competition really helped and I can’t thank them enough.”

Tibor lives in Edinburgh but is originally from Hungary. He achieved an IMI Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and was recently recognised for his outstanding achievements at the college award ceremony.

“I chose Edinburgh College because I wanted to improve my skills in the automotive industry and the college was able to provide this. I was also interested in gaining new qualifications and experiences.

The best thing about studying at Edinburgh College was that I gained my Level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications in one place. It’s a really friendly and supportive environment with a professional attitude to students. I’ve gained really good skills and knowledge for when I finish college and enter the industry for work.

The biggest challenge I faced was English, as it is my second language. It wasn’t easy to overcome but luckily the support from my lecturers helped me to get to as high a level as possible.

My advice to any future students is not to be scared to join Edinburgh College. It will definitely help you to gain the right skills to get into the industry you want. The college gives you industry-recognised qualifications.

Studying at the college helped me to gain employment at Stagecoach Group as a bus mechanic in 2015. I was working nights at the garage and still managed to attend college during the day. I wish to continue my studies with qualifications in HNC or HND engineering in the near future.

I’m proud that I have achieved my qualification and the experiences I have had. I am also proud to be awarded Automotive Student of the Year 2017.

I remember the day I went to my college interview in 2013 – it feels like yesterday. I never thought that I would get so much out of it but I did and I’m delighted.”
