Cooperative ITS: Vision
Communicating vehicleCommunication scenarios diversity (V2V, V2I, I2V, Internet)Communications diversity (WiFi, DSRC, 3G, Satellite, ...)Application diversity (road safety, road effi ciency, infotainment, ...)
Thierry Ernst – IPv6 World Congress – Paris –February 2011 5
Cooperative ITS: IP address requirementsITS and IP
Most ITS I non-IPIP-based ITSs are using IPv4 and are proprietary (no standards)Everything will be connected to the Internet (once)Number of cars worldwide
1997: 600 millions2030: 1200 millions (at present trend)
Several IP addresses per vehicle On-board units (OBU / Router) maintaining Internet access through several medias (3G, 802.11p, ...)Application Units (AU / Host) running ITS applicationsHand-held devices running multimedia applicationsOEM: Gateway between IP and CAN
Forthcoming ITS standards are only considering IPv6EU: ITS station reference architecture (ETSI – ISO)US: IEEE P1609 (WAVE)
Thierry Ernst – IPv6 World Congress – Paris –February 2011 6
Cooperative ITS: Standardization and pre-Deployment
EC standardization mandate M/45365 standards to be developed by ETSI – CEN (2009-2012)IPv6 explicitly in the title of several standards to be developed by CEN/ETSI IPv6 required for many use cases
ITS IPv6-related standardsETSI TC ITS: TS-102-636-6-1 “IPv6 GeoNetworking” + test suitesISO TC204: 21210 “IPv6 Networking”IEEE: P1609 “Wave”CEN TC278+ ISO 15118: TC22 Electric Vehicle
EC's ITS Directive (Aug.2010) will enforce the deployment of Cooperative ITS based on ETSI/CEN/ISO standards
Standards to be completed in 2012Deployment expected in 2015

V2V safety communications are non-IP
Single hopMulti hop: GeoNetworking
All the rest is IPv6Traffi c effi ciencyInfotainmentSafety but not V2V
The architecture allows both modes (IP & non-IP)

Vehicle ITS Station: In-vehicle IP network
V2V & V2I communication crucial for ITSVehicles will be fully networked / in-vehicle networkIn-vehicle devices will require (continuous) Internet connectivity Internet connectivity will be provided transparently to the applications through a range of access technologies
2G/3G/4G, IEEE 802.11 a/b/g, IEEE 802.11p, DSRC, ...

CVIS: IPv6 Communication between subsystemsImplementation based on ISO CALM standards
Media: M5 (802.11 variant), 2G/3G, infraredNative IPv6 or OpenVPN/L2TP
Deployed in several test sites, most notably:Trondheim (Norway)Gothenburg (Sweden)Helmond (Netherlands)
Major demonstration held at the Cooperative Mobility Showcase, Amsterdam April 2010
http://www.cooperativemobilityshowcase.eu/nl/en/DemonstrationsDemonstrated several use cases using IPv6Demonstrated the capability offered by IPv6 (e.g. seamless handovers between M5 and 3G media)
Major issues encounteredLack of IPv6 access offered by ISPsTraining of the engineers

Thierry Ernst – IPv6 World Congress – Paris –February 2011 16
GeoNet: IPv6 GeoNetworking Scenarios
GeoNet: scenarios requiring both IPv6 and GeoNetworking
Scenario Type 1: Sender is in the InternetPackets are transmitted in IPv6 until the roadside equipment serving the geographic area where they are geo-routed through intermediate vehicles to the fi nal destination(s).
Scenario Type 2: Receiver is in the InternetPackets are geo-routed through intermediate vehicles (using geo-unicast) until the roadside equipment where they are transmitted in IPv6 to the fi nal destination.
Scenario Type 3: Sender & receiver(s) are only reachable through the Internet
Combination of Scenarios Type 1 & 2 where source and destination(s) are out of multihop wireless range
