2010 Audi A6 3.2

Mid-size meets luxury in third generation AudiWith its third generation

nearing an end and a new version in the works, the 2010 Audi A6 liquidly moves down the highway with an assertive stance, sweeping lines and a fluid combina-tion of elegance, sportiness and performance to position itself well in the mid-size executive car segment.

Some eight inches lon-ger and an inch taller than its sibling, the A4, the A6 is one of the longest cars in its class, and while more con-servative in aura than many of its classmates, it more than holds its own on all lev-els and with aggressive pric-ing, it could be the best buy in the segment.

Manufactured in Neckar-sulm, Baden Wuertemberg, Germany, the mid-size A6 began life in 1994 as the rebadged Audi 5000 (Audi 100 overseas), as a compli-ment to the full-sized A8.

Elegant sophisticationBuilt with a galvanized

steel body and aluminum hood and front fenders, the sweetly rounded and grace-fully sophisticated A6 mea-sures 194 inches long, 79.9 inches wide and 57.4 inches high on a 111.9-inch wheel-base.

Weighing in at a robust 3858 lbs., A6 comes at you with its striking signature Singleframe® grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, taillights that are in the same family as those on its sisters, the A4 sedan and A5 coupe and LED daytime running lamps that resemble those on Audi’s A8 supercar.

Audi A6’s exterior calls luxury-class attention to it-self with two large air inlets toward the bottom of the front fascia to offer the im-pression of speed and athlet-icism. Along its sides, the A6 is classic with brawny fender arches and refined accents around the cabin. The long, aerodynamic styling and a sporty rear design and short

trunk deck gives the sedan an almost coupe-like ap-pearance, and two muscu-lar exhaust ports once again create an aura of speed.

Multiple power optionsAvailable with several en-

gine configurations, the most popular power plants are the 3.2 FSI V-6 Engine producing 265 horsepower and 243 lbs-ft of torque and the 3.0 TFSI (supercharged) V-6 Engine that creates 300 horsepower and 310 lbs-ft of torque. A 4.2 FSI quattronic V-8 engine is also an option, delivering 350 horsepower and 328 lbs-ft of torque. My test ride was outfitted with the number-one choice of buyers, the 3.2.

This lightweight new 3.2 V-6 provides a blend of power and efficiency to pro-vide good pop in all ranges and fuel economy. EPA rated at 18mpg in the city and 28 on the highway (the 3.0 su-percharged gets 18 and 26) and a week of mixed-use testing achieved an aver-age of 22.2mpg on 91 octane fuel.

The A6 3.2 FSI makes use of the Audi Multitronic con-tinuously variable transmis-sion for a constant stream of power, making optimal use of the engine’s wide torque band. The manufacturer claims a zero-to-60 burst in 6.9 seconds and a 15.2-sec-ond quarter-mile, but my tests, with the car tuned as one would normally been driven off the car lot, and at less than pristine track con-ditions, produced a solid 7.6 sprint and a 16.1 quarter-mile.

On the road, the sport-

tuned four link front sus-pension with anti roll bar, twin-tube-gas-filled shock absorbers and trapezoidal-link, and twin-tube gas-filled shocks in the rear allow the driver to feel every nu-ance of the highway, which is good for track use, but not pampering for passengers in a luxury automobile. How-ever, yaw, body roll and un-dersteer/oversteer are virtu-ally undetectable as precise speed-sensitive power rack and pinion steering helps the A6 corner with confidence and the cabin experience is quiet.

Handcrafted interiorThe 2010 A6 is as fluid and

progressive on the inside as it is on the outside. The driv-er-oriented cockpit with an available three-spoke mul-tifunction steering wheel is the center of the well-de-signed, handcrafted interi-or with graceful lines, wood inlays and Valcona leather, to create an elegant atmo-sphere.

Interior dimensions come in at 38.7 inches in front

headroom with 37.8 for rear passengers, 41.3 inches of legroom in the first row and 36.9 in row two, while shoulder room measures 57.1 and 55.9.

The cabin is filled with such amenities as new alu-minum accents on steer-ing wheel and other interior controls, third-generation MMI® with a 7-inch col-or LCD display and con-trols for the climate, central locking, audio and phone and navigation systems. A DSP extended sound system includes 10 speakers and a six-disc CD changer, iPod interface, five-function trip computer as well as infor-mation on external temper-ature, vehicle speed, naviga-tion and radio information.

Top safety pickA top safety pick on many

lists, A6 utilizes a number of active and passive safety systems and includes, dual-stage front air bags, side air bags, side curtain air bags, intelligent safety belts, adaptive lights with corner-ing lights, rearview parking

camera and blind spot de-tection assistant.

Base priced at $45,200 plus $850 in destination charges, my test A-6 Premium came in with a lower sticker about $6000 under MSRP, and was upgraded with several packages including the Cold Weather Package with heat-ed steering wheel and seats ($650), 18-inch alloy wheels, Navigational system ($1700) and rear side airbags for $350 for a bottom line of $43,050, but discounts and incentives

are available.The 2010 Audi A6 is a

luxury vehicle at a mid-size price.

The open-top, 2011 E350 and E550 look pretty on the road, ride smoothly and have the latest ameni-ties and technology to make even cool-weather driving more comfortable than ex-pected. But like past Mer-cedes Cabriolets of the early 1990s, the E-Class Cabrios have fabric soft tops, not the more complicated and weighty retractable hard-tops that are common today. And so the E-Class convert-ibles offer a good amount of trunk space.

Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, for the E350 Cabriolet with 268-horsepower V-6 is $57,725. The uplevel E550 with 382-horsepower V-8 starts at $65,675.

Both models come with many standard features, in-cluding leather-trimmed seats, seven-speed auto-matic transmission, dual-zone climate control, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, 18-inch wheels and adjust-able, 14-way, power front seats. Standard safety items include front and side air bags, a driver air bag to help keep the driver properly po-sitioned behind the steering wheel during a frontal crash, electronic stability control and pop-up rollbars that deploy in a rollover crash.

Stiff competitionCompetitors in the four-

passenger luxury convert-ible segment include the 2011 Audi A5 Cabriolet, which has a starting retail price of $42,875 with tur-bocharged four-cylinder engine, and the 2010 BMW 650i Convertible, which starts at $86,175 with 360-horsepower V-8.

Despite their E-Class

moniker, these Cabriolets ride on a rear-wheel drive platform that shares a lot with the smaller, lower-priced Mercedes C-Class sedans.

But the new convertibles’ striking exterior styling, well-crafted interior and 15.4-foot-length ensure that the Cabrios don’t come off as entry-level Mercedes.

The tester, an uplevel E550 with 5.5-liter, double over-head cam V-8, surprised with its calm, cruising per-sonality in city traffic and was an easy, welcoming car for everyday use.

Thanks to a nicely damped s u s p e n s i o n , p a s s e n -gers didn’t feel many road bumps, and even vibrations were predominantly mild. With roof closed, the in-terior was strikingly quiet for a soft-top convertible. I noticed that typical loud sounds from nearby trucks and the roar of Harley mo-torcycles in the lane next to me were kept to a minimum. Mercedes engineers call the fabric top an acoustic roof, and it’s made thick and

sturdy to insulate against the weather and noise.

It also goes up or down in 20 seconds with the touch of a button.

But I had to search to find the button. It’s tucked under a small, leather-trimmed cover in the center console.

Hallmarks of comfortOne of the hallmarks of

the E-Class Cabrios is how much Mercedes did to in-clude features that make these cars warm and less windy when the tops are down. One feature is the Airscarf, which blows heated air onto the backs of front-passenger necks through small air holes between the head restraints and the top of the seatbacks. Mercedes put this feature into its SLK two-seater. Now, it’s im-proved and effective in the E-Class Cabrios.

Mercedes also has its new Aircap — a panel that a driv-er can activate from the top of the windshield to help di-rect air flow over front and rear passengers. With side windows up, it seems to be

most beneficial for people in the front seat, rather than the back. But it left me won-dering: Isn’t a convertible ride supposed to feel like you’re in the open air and not just under a big sun-roof?

These convertibles have structural reinforcements for a stable ride, without shakes when the roof is down. The reinforcements also add weight, making the cars feel solid. Specifi-cally, the test E550 Cabriolet had a curb weight of more than 4,000 pounds, which is about what a GMC Can-yon pickup truck with V-8 weighs.

Poor gas mileageFuel mileage isn’t the best

for the four-seat E550, and it uses premium gasoline. The federal government rating is just 15 miles per gallon in

city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. My test driv-ing average was less than 19 mpg, but I didn’t try to maximize mileage.

The strong power from the throaty V-8 was intoxicating and I enjoyed the rush that came when I pressed firm-ly on the accelerator. Peak torque is 391 foot-pounds, and it comes on at 2,800 rpm and holds to 4,800 rpm. This is enough for a zero-to-60-mile-an-hour sprint in just 5.1 seconds, according to Mercedes.

The base engine, a 3.5-li-ter V-6, generates 258 foot-pounds of torque starting at 2,400 rpm.

The Mercedes has little “arms” that bring the front-seat shoulder belts forward so driver and passenger don’t have to twist around to grab them after they get in the car.

The two back seats are n i c e l y c u s h i o n e d a n d sculpted. But they remain a bit cramped in legroom and, when the roof is on, head-room.

I used every bit of the 8.8 cubic feet of trunk space when the roof was folded down. When the roof was atop the car, I had a full 11.8 cubic feet of storage room in the trunk.

Last month, the 2011 E-Class Cabriolet was among C- and other E-Class mod-els named in a safety recall of 85,300 cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration said a loss of power steering fluid could lead impair a driver’s ability to steer properly.

Convertibles aren’t the only new models for the E-Class line. There’s a new, fifth-generation, 2011 E-Class Wagon, too.

Drivers following the road to safe winter drivingFrom lower air tempera-

tures and falling snow to icy roads and even reduced vis-ibility due to fewer daylight hours, winter driving poses a number of challenges.

While you can’t change the driving conditions, you can help ensure your vehicle is prepared to navigate them safely.

Consider the following tips for getting your car in shape before colder temper-atures hit:

Maximize your visibility Re p l a c e wo r n w i p e r

blades — generally, they should be replaced every six months — and ensure that your heater and defroster are working properly to aid in window clearing.

Before you start driving, always remove all snow and ice from the hood, roof and trunk surfaces of your vehi-cle, not just the windshield, and defrost all windows.

Check your tire pressure

Recommended tire pres-sures for your car can usu-ally be found on the inside of your driver’s-side door frame. Properly inflated tires will help ensure you have the best traction possible on wet or icy roads.

Have a professional check the tire pressure often, as tires lose approximately one pound per square inch of pressure for every 10 de-grees Fahrenheit of temper-ature drop.

Prevent fluid freezingA variety of fluids are

needed to keep your car running efficiently, and re-quire different techniques to prevent them from freezing. Fill your windshield washer reservoir with a winter-rat-ed washing solution.

Keep your gas tank as full as possible. Have a shop check for your manufactur-er’s recommended mix of antifreeze (coolant) and wa-ter inside your radiator.

Light the wayMake sure your headlights,

taillights and turn signals are

all in working order. Clear them of snow each time you drive.

If driving in fog, heavy rain or snow, be sure to not overdrive the beams of your headlights. Drive at a speed that keeps you within your field of vision.

Invest in preventive maintenance

Consult your owner’s manual for recommended preventive maintenance according to the odometer reading you’re approaching.

If an oil change is called for, make sure you receive oil with the correct viscosity for your vehicle at this time of year. Oil tends to thick-en as it gets colder, and oil that’s too thick won’t do its job properly.

Examine under the hood

Have a shop take a look at your belts and hoses and test the battery. Battery ca-bles should be properly con-nected and free of corrosion or harsh wear and tear. If they’re not, fix them now.

Ask your local M idas shop for a multi-point vi-sual courtesy check, which will tell you about your car’s condition and help identify whether your vehicle may benefit from winter mainte-nance services.

Consider putting on snow tires

If you live in an area that’s prone to heavy snow, par-ticularly if you have hills to navigate, snow tires will give you extra traction and help you avoid sliding or getting stuck.

Pack an emergency kit in your car

Even the most well-main-tained car can get stranded in deep snow or inclement weather. Some things you might want to keep in the car: blankets, first aid kit, windshield scraper, jump-er cables, safety goggles, small shovel, bag of sand or cat litter or even tire chains for traction, tool kit, wa-terproof matches, highway

flares, brightly colored cloth or “help” sign, bottled water and energy bars.

Plan extra driving time Whether it’s rainy, snowy

or icy, your car is at risk of hydroplaning, slipping or sliding if you drive too fast.

Allot extra time to get to your destinations during winter months so you don’t have to rush.

“Whether you’re mak-ing a short trip to work, or embarking on a long drive home for the holidays, the last thing you want is for your car to fail and leave you stuck,” says Brian Watkins, director of training at Mi-das.

“Don’t wait to make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter driving.”

Have a professional check the tire pressure often, as tires lose approximately one pound per square inch of pressure for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature drop.

Protect yourself — and your car — this winter Cold-weather driving definite-

ly presents its challenges. Aside from the chance of getting stuck or stranded in less-than-ideal weath-er, there’s also an increased risk of accidents when roads aren’t in opti-mal condition.

In fact, 24 percent of accidents are weather-related, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

The best way to avoid a weather-related accident is to refrain from driving when conditions aren’t ide-al.

But since that’s not always possi-ble, you should take steps to protect yourself and your vehicle before the weather turns bad.

The National Highway Transpor-tation Safety Administration rec-ommends taking the following ac-tions before winter hits:

• Get your car serviced to see if you have any major issues that could leave you stranded in bad weather.

• Make sure your battery has enough power to start your car in cold weather.

• Make sure you have the proper amount of coolant to avoid freezing and consult your owner’s manual to see if you should change the cool-ant/water ratios.

• Fill up on wiper fluid and inspect your windshield wipers.

• Check tires for cracks and worn tread. Make sure your tire pressure is at recommended levels as colder air can cause them to deflate.

• Stock your vehicle with emer-gency items like a shovel, sand, blankets and jumper cables.

These preparations can also help protect your vehicle from winter wear:

• If you drive a truck, spray-on truck bedliners, such as those of-fered by LINE-X, can help protect your truck bed from rust and other negative effects of road salt and ex-

treme temperature changes.
