STRENGTH and diversity — that is the catchcry for the Kia 2500 light truck range, and it is right on the mark.

The Kia 2500 can be adapted to meet the needs of just about every possible business with a utility vehicle that drives like a car while to top it off, you don’t even need an HT licence. Another plus is that these trucks do not require the fitting of a hubometer.

There are four variants in the range — a dry body truck, a refrigerated truck, a walk-through model and the flat deck version, our test drive vehicle.

The flat deck truck has a very useful 1000kg payload for its 1.8 cubic metres of deck space.

It has a low loading height of only 733mm which makes manual loading possible, fully-hinged side panels and a loading area tailgate that can be lowered by up to 180 degrees, a folding-type stopper for longer loads, rubber-wrapped rear gate chains and multiple tie-down points.

With a turning circle of only 5.02 metres and power-assisted steering, it is simple to drive and will go just about anywhere. The flat deck also has reversing sensors.

All four models are powered by a 2.5-litre common-rail diesel engine delivering maximum power of 96kW at 3800rpm and 255Nm of torque at 3500rpm giving a fuel economy of 9.9-litres/100km.

It has a very-smooth-to-operate six-speed manual transmission.

All the K2500 trucks come with a driver airbag, ABS brakes with front discs and rear drums, and a load-sensing proportioning valve and dual rear wheels.

Kia provides a three-year warranty, three years of 24/7 roadside assistance, and a servicing interval of 15,000km, or one year.

One thing is certain, is that anyone spending a lot of time in the 2500 range is going to be comfortable.

The hard-wearing vinyl seats are

designed to provide all-day comfort while to minimise fatigue the driver’s seat features extra-thick cushions in the seat back and bottom as well as adjustable lumbar support.

The front centre seatback folds down to reveal a multi-functional console for practical storage adding to the storage space within the centre console.

Remote controls located on the steering wheel operate a full CD and stereo system as well as integrating with Bluetooth.

Four separate vents mean the air conditioning system can rapidly warm or cool the cabin.

This really is the truck for all reasons — everything from a mobile office to a mobile factory. Strength and diversity indeed.

Kia delivers versatilityThe 2500 range meets every demand

IN 1967 Ford Australia introduced a Falcon that would become synonymous with the brand and car. That designation was GT.

In the ensuing years new Falcon models evolved the GT name remained in the line-up and in 1969 with the XW series Falcon GT the most revered name in Australasian motoring was introduced — the GTHO.

In 1970 the XW GTHO was powered by the Cleveland engine (as opposed to the 1969s Windsor) and became the GTHO Phase 2.

By 1971 the XY model Falcon was in production and, of course, a GT was in the line-up.

As time went on a GTHO model came to fruition and is now the model that most people associate with the Falcon GT.

The XA model was released in 1972 but by 1973 a planned GTHO phase 4 was scuttled due to the infamous supercar scare.

One vehicle was produced on the Ford production line with GTHO VIN tags and three other GTs were prepared to GTHO

specifications for racing. The year 1974 brought us

the XB model — the last GT to be produced until 1992 when the 25th anniversary limited-edition EB GT was manufactured.

Thirty years after the 1967 XR GT was introduced the EL GT was also built in limited numbers to commemorate the anniversary.

By 2003, and the release of the BA model Falcon, the GT was once again put into full-time production which continued through the BF and current model FG Falcon.

In 1980 a group of dedicated Falcon GT owners formed the GT Falcon Club of New Zealand.

Today the club has members from all over New Zealand and once a year holds its National Convention in different centres around the country.

This year it is the turn of Gisborne.

The club will be holding a Show ’n’ Shine display at Gisborne Motors Ford dealership on Saturday, October 27, from 9.30am through to 1pm.

I recently went from my home in Wainuiomata to Palmerston North to attend a classic truck meet and the Mack truck 50-year (1972-2012) celebrations.

I parked my 1945 Chevrolet next to a very well-cared-for International KB Series flat deck ute, so I decided to draw it.

The proud dairy farmer owner said his dad had bought an International just as World War 2 started but it was taken by the government for military use, so after the war he bought the 1948 International KB Series ute.

These models were almost the same as the pre-war trucks but had extra chrome grille pieces added.

The 214 cu in flat head (side valve) six- cylinder engine with a four-main-bearing crankshaft that had full-pressure engine lubrication, developed 82 bhp at 3400rpm but with a low compression ratio of 6.3:1.

It could idle at 350rpm which was extremely slow for an engine and I guess would have suited the farm haymaking work of those days.

Most other trucks would have overheated or had oil starvation problems idling at such a slow speed.

International built its first car in 1907 and its first truck in 1909, but in 1952 a survey showed that half the vehicles International had built by that time were still in service.

By 1940 International was producing 50 different truck models, among which was the K series pick up or utility.

This model, typically of the era, had a high-domed roof cab with a long pointed engine hood or bonnet, but the headlamps were set in the front fenders (mudguards) — a rather modern idea for trucks.

The all-steel cab also had a fully-

adjustable bench seat for three adults and the instrument panel had an ammeter, oil pressure gauge, fuel tank gauge and water temperature, while the speedometer had an easy-to-read sweep hand that went up to 80mph.

The dash featured a glove box that was the same size as the instrument dash so changing these trucks from left- to right- hand drive was simplified.

The wheelbase for this KB model was either 113 or 125 inches with three different differential ratios — 3.72:1, 4.88:1, or 5.11:1.

There were two different types of rear axle systems — a semi-floating for the smaller trucks or a fully-floating system for the larger models.

Both front and rear axles were heavy beam with semi-elliptic leaf springs and Lovejoy hydraulic shock absorbers. The hydraulic drum brakes acted on all four wheels.

Two transmissions were available — one a three-speed with synchro on second and top gear, or a four-speed straight gear teeth-crash type.

Both used a centre-floor gear change lever. A heavy duty 10-inch diameter dry clutch was used for both transmissions.

The electrical system was 6 volt. International became America’s

fourth largest truck manufacturer in 1946 having 12.05 percent of the total market with 113,546 vehicles made. In 1947 production totalled 153,009; in 1948, 155,784, and the Chicago company employed 15,000 workers.

The nickname for International trucks in the USA was “corn-binders”.

International trucks were used worldwide and were well-known as good reliable vehicles.

Working for GisborneTHE new-look vehicle testing station is working

for all of Gisborne and is one of the few remaining community owned testing stations in New Zealand.

Gisborne motorists getting their warrant of fitness from Gisborne Vehicle Testing (GVT) will quickly notice the changes made during their next visit.

The refurbished testing station has just become the home of the AA agency.

As well as being able to get warrants of fitness, driver licensing, update ownership records, register your vehicle, get new registration plates, buy road user charges and benefit from bulk buy discounts GVT now offers AA memberships, passport photos, IRD number applications and maps. Businesses can even open a corporate account.

“We have become a one-stop shop,” said manager Bruce Walters.

A real focus on people from staff in both the vehicle testing area and AA departments, and an upgrade in the premises and processes has resulted in fast moving queues, significantly reduced waiting times and a friendly feel throughout the facility.

Motorists will feel like they are in a VIP lounge with a water cooler, newspapers and a television all available as they wait.

“We are a commercially savvy operation,” said Bruce.

“The benefit of this is for all of Gisborne. “We return all profits to Gisborne District Council

and ultimately to the ratepayers.“The more work we do, the more funding is kept

here locally.” Gisborne Vehicle Testing is already in the top tier

of New Zealand WoF facilities for its quality of work and volume of customers and understands it must constantly evolve to remain competitive and an asset unique to Gisborne.

Forming a mutually beneficial association with AA, one of the most reputable organisations in the country, has helped the testing station

emphasise its own reputation for quality and reliability.

“We are proud to be the home of the AA agency,” said Bruce.

AA is delighted to be associated with Gisborne Vehicle Testing said David McLister, General Manager of AA Government Contracts.

“It ensures that AA continues to provide membership services to its members in the Gisborne area, and the opportunity to join with Gisborne District Council and be the dominant provider of driver licensing and motor vehicle licensing transactions for the region, is a real ‘win-win’ for the wider Gisborne Community.”

Luxury only for those with lolly

Rolls Royce customers want a vehicle that is exclusive, and that is what they get here. Photo by Jacqui Madelin

BLIP the throttle and somewhere a long way forward a 6.75-litre V12 engine flexes its muscles.

But I can’t hear it and I can’t feel it —this long-wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantom seems more hovercraft than earthbound as I swing the massive wheel and point it down the long tunnel of trees ahead, hoping like hell there’s nothing coming as this car is well over 6m long, almost 2m wide and weighs close to three tons. There is no space for other traffic.

Yet it’s a remarkably effortless drive, the rise of those patrician wings, suggesting the car’s edges, while a gauge up front gently informs me we’re using just 10 percent of the 720Nm of torque on tap — which is barely idling, as 75 percent of it is available from 1000rpm. The hushed tones of my passenger are crystal clear given the whisper-quiet ride.

This long wheelbase Phantom Series II will do zero to 100 in 6.1 seconds, thanks to 338kW and an eight-speed ZF auto. It drinks at 14.9l/100km, and surrounds us in hand-polished wood, sheepskin carpets so deep your shoes disappear and the sort of over-engineered gadgets that would make a tech-head weep but will be overlooked by the super-rich who buy this car. After all, starting price is $775,000 — but 90 percent of buyers option it up from there.

Although the LWB feels more like an aircraft carrier to pilot than a car, the Ghost is a mightier proposition. Still very much a Roller in terms of image, finish

and materials, it is much smaller — at 5.4m long and 2.4 tons — and quicker.

The 6.6-litre V12 engine with its 420kW and 780Nm propels its occupants in effortless silence from zero to 100 in 4.9 seconds — 1.2 less than the bigger Phantom. Its slightly smaller wheel and tighter steering make this the Rolls to have if you drive yourself; certainly it’s a better fit for the tight back roads around Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood factory in England. Yet it’s also a car in which to be driven — the plant’s “taxi” fleet is comprised of these $565,000 cars.

Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Muller-Otvos — yes, he is German — says to work here he must understand “Britishness”, which is part of the appeal and means “a Rolls-Royce will never be built in other markets”.

Demand is growing but he isn’t planning a smaller car.

“We are not chasing volume, it is wrong for such a brand. Our customers want a car that is so exclusive. Instead of numbers, BMW expects profit, hence increasing emphasis on the bespoke department that can make each Rolls as unique as your own fingerprint.”

Best cancel my order for an orange Phantom with yellow leather, then — it’s been done. And forget the Desert Gold hue that uses 0.19g of gold powder per litre of paint. I’ll have baby blue, with gold wheels and a 24-carat gold “Spirit” up front — at $105,000 it’s the perfect finishing touch.

The sheer size of the Rolls Royce Phantom will have other awestruck drivers giving way

Sherwood supreme

NEW ZEALAND Red Bull X-Fighter Levi Sherwood’s recovery from a couple of horrendous crashes is complete.

The 21-year-old put on a masterful display at Cockatoo Island, Sydney, to claim the championship and became the youngest competitor to take the million dollars and the title.

Sherwood was even on points with Thomas Page before the final but the Frenchman blew any chance of winning by crashing early in the final.

The Kiwi kept a clean sheet and went on to win in all categories.

At the beginning of the seven-month title chase, Sherwood said his main aim was stay in one piece after damaging his liver,

lungs, kidneys and breaking a few bones. He won half the events staged this

year — Dubai, Madrid and Sydney. At the Sydney event he outscored Eigo Sato 87.40 points to 84.50 in what was described as a near flawless run. “It’s been a long series and there have been ups and downs along the way,” he said.

A million-dollar run

Napier's $1m buses banned from road

Two second-hand buses which have been refitted for a new Art Deco service in Napier at a cost of about $1 million to ratepayers are unroadworthy and back off to the workshop, before they've hit the road.

Bought in France, remodelled in the United States and in the country barely a week, they were to have been pushed into service almost immediately to meet a new summer demand, but have been ruled unsafe for the road with multiple faults found by vehicle testers.

Plans were today being made to transport them by truck from Hawkes Bay to Tauranga for Bay of Plenty company Kiwi Bus Builders to complete the job which should have been done by California refitters H.B.Industries, hopefully still within a budget criticised by some opponents since the bus plans emerged two years ago.

Adopting the bus-stops-here approach, Napier City Council chief executive Neil Taylor conceded today the number and nature of the faults and omissions was “very frustrating and very disappointing”.

They include a spare wheel missing from one bus, indicators that don't function, internal lights not working on one of the buses, a driver's seatbelt improperly fitted, two seats not properly fixed in

position, and other issues such as missing window seals and blemishes in the paintwork.

“Stupid things,” he said. “Things where you ask, 'Why didn't they just fix that?”'

The buses, including purpose-designed open-air viewing platforms, were intended to be in service this month, running tourists between the sea frontage of Napier City and the popular eat-out and bar areas of Ahuriri.

A particular target is the cruise-liner season, with 65 visits scheduled from October 30 to the first week of April.

Mr Taylor praised the efforts of bus operating contractors Nimon and the Tauranga company trying to rectify problems which were not of their making, but said it was clear the buses would not be in use for the “whole of the summer” as the council had planned.

The council is in the meantime withholding a final payment to H.B.Industries, Mr Taylor said.HAWKES BAY TODAY

Anniversary Edition GTS announced

After HSV announced their new special 25th Anniversary edition line up a few months back, we suspected they may be holding out on releasing the GTS until the upcoming Sydney Motor Show. And we were right.

The 25th Anniversary GTS is well worth the wait though, building on an already impressive list of standard features, including a 325kW, 6.2L engine.

The cars feature a new design light-weight, 20-inch forged wheel in a satin graphite finish, which reduces overall weight by 22kg over the stock GTS wheel package. The vehicle’s “Vector” hood scoops and side vents also receive the satin graphite treatment. The previous option-only 6-piston brake package will now

come as stock, as does the blind-side zone alert.

Just 15 of the vehicles will find their way to New Zealand, and they should land around the end of October, all going to plan. Each will be equipped with a personalised build plate, along with 25th anniversary ornamentation including seat embroidery, exterior badging, sill plates, and EDI “start-up” screen.

With the $7600 worth of upgrades, plus the vehicle’s collectable appeal, the price is an impressively low $104,900 — just $3000 more than the regular GTS. Not bad at all, if you ask us!

Growth propels Kia into top 100

Kia Motors Corporation enters the exclusive list of the Top 100 Best Global Brands, according to the 2012 study released by Interbrand, the world's largest brand consultancy agency.

Kia's increase in brand value is now estimated at US$4.1 billion (NZ$4.9bn), which firmly sets the automaker at 87th place on the list. This is a 50 per cent increase from last year's estimated brand value and far exceeds the average automotive brand value growth rate of 11 per cent.

This year's edition of Interbrand's annual 'Best Global Brands' study was executed through a comprehensive brand performance analysis using best practice research methodology by expert analysts.

The study measures a corporation's financial performance in terms of the raw financial return to investors and the role that a brand plays in the actual purchase decision. It also looks at brand strength, which is the ability of a brand to make money in the future.

The strong increase in Kia's brand value closely mirrors the company's recent surge in global sales, which have posted three consecutive double-digit year-or-year gains to cement Kia's position as the world's fastest growing major automotive brand.

Over the three years from 2008 to 2011, Kia's annual global sales have grown 81 per cent to nearly 2.5 million vehicles.

Claire Chai, vice-president of Kia

Motors Corp marketing division, said, “Entering the 'Top 100 Best Global Brands' validates Kia's commitment to continuously provide exciting and inspiring brand experiences. And it's amazing to see what we can accomplish by staying true to who we are - a young and dynamic challenger that goes beyond expectations.”

In New Zealand, Kia is sitting at 10th spot for the year to date with new car sales.
