THE PURCELL SCHOOL the Purcell School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, and is Britain’s oldest specialistschool for talented young musicians. it is a co-educational boarding and day school, based in Hertfordshire. the School holds the uneSCo Mozart Gold Medal in recognitionof its unique contribution to music, education and international culture. the School’sPatron, HrH the Prince of Wales, accepted the award at a special ceremony at theuneSCo headquarters in Paris.

An education at The Purcell School is available toeveryone. The aim of the School is to provide adynamic, exciting and supportive environment inwhich young musicians can flourish. The School isfunded largely by the Government's Music andDance Scheme which, along with its own scholarshipfunds, ensures that all pupils join the School on thestrength of their musical potential irrespective oftheir parents' ability to pay.

The curriculum allows pupils to study a full range ofsubjects with a special emphasis on Music. At GCSElevel, pupils will typically study 8 subjects. At AS, 3 or4 subjects, and at A2, 2 or 3 subjects. Being on the edge of London, the School takes advantage of all that the city has to offer, but enjoys a semi-rural environment. The proximity to Londongives access to the eminent international musicianswho comprise the instrumental teaching faculty.

Most Purcell pupils go on to music college and sometake up places at Oxbridge or other universities. Weare very proud of our former students who haveenjoyed national or international success, includingNicholas Daniel, the first winner of the BBC YoungMusician of the Year competition, and the 2010winner, Lara Melda.

The School has exceptional facilities; state-of-the-art classrooms, a professional recording studio,

superb practice rooms and a recital hall withexceptional acoustics.

Pupils are given outstanding opportunities forperformances. We hold lunchtime concerts everyweekday, and all pupils perform at these. Chamber music and orchestral recitals take placeregularly, and every year performances are given at the Southbank Centre, St Albans Abbey andWigmore Hall. Visiting conductors have included Sir Simon Rattle, Paul Daniel and John Rutter. Inrecent years masterclasses have been given byZakhar Bron, Andras Schiff and Natalia Gutmanamong others.

Entry to The Purcell School is by audition. Qualifyingpupils receive funding from the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme whilst others aresupported by generous trusts and benefactors.
