About US

We like to think that THE OLD MARKET [or TOM for short] is the best place in Brighton & Hove to see a show. Our MAIN HOUSE is a recently-refurbished, 300 seated, 500 standing capacity room with stunning roof beams, comfortable seating and high spec kit. Next door, TOM’S BAR and WATERLOO ROOM offer a great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere each show brings. The Old Market is owned and managed by two of the city’s most successful artists, the creators of international smash-hit show STOMP.

Look out for TOM’S TAGS throughout this programme and online. These indicate our hand-picked shows, highly recommended by us. We aim to encourage, and provide an excellent framework for, the presentation and production of performance arts.

Celebrating theatre-makers, performers and creatives who employ new technologies to hone their craft...

Highlights:

Through an ambitious, ongoing programme of support and development, The Old Market brings together performance arts and new technologies. Kicking off with a thrilling programme of work this Brighton Digital Festival, we’re inviting creatives and technologists to create amazing live performance, and to share their discoveries. In addition to numerous events - many of which are completely FREE - you can also join the conversation, discover work in development and meet the artists: check out theoldmarket.com/DIGITAL2015

Immerse yourself in a virtual reality world; Circa69’s THE CUBE [12-13, 19-20 & 26-27 SEP] is a short one-on-one performance that’s sure to blow your mind. Creator of The Cube Simon Wilkinson also leads a fascinating free talk on THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ATTENTION and the creation of immersive performance [07 SEP].

Out of doors - and also free - is an event by ‘projection-mapping superheros’ SHARED SPACE & LIGHT, whose TALKING POSTS [17-22 SEP] will be positioned out on the streets near The Old Market. These lamp posts are not what they seem…!

Other highlights of the programme include: ADAM BUXTON’s inimitable BUG [02 SEP], in which he selects an array of tasty musical video treats to titillate and delight; READY SALTED CODE’s digitally-driven dance show [data]storm [13 SEP], which uses big data and wearable tech to unpick computer science through ballet; ADDICTIVETV’s ORCHESTRA OF SAMPLES [19 SEP], live mixing an international ‘supergroup’ of 200+ musicians who’ve never met; and, for toddlers, we’re bringing over Imaginart from Catalonia to present their outstanding immersive experience, SENSACIONAL [26-27 SEP] [well worth watching their brilliant video for a flavour of the fun!]

Love, Laughs, Power and SuperheroEs frame our sparkling new theatre seasonDark puppetry pioneers GREEN GINGER tackle the grotesque in OUTPOST [28-29 SEP], their brand new production about nationalism, leadership and the terrible consequences of using another man’s toilet. Acclaimed writer GARY MCNAIR delivers a sucker punch blow with his deconstruction of the darker side of stand up comedy in his hit show DONALD ROBERTSON IS NOT A STAND UP COMEDIAN [05 OCT], brought to us by SHOW AND TELL.Comic book action comes fizzing to life with PANIC LAB’s dynamic adventure show R.I.O.T. [13-14 OCT] - expect lots of Lycra and laughs! The laughs keep coming, with PAINES PLOUGH’s critically acclaimed, heart-wrenching and poignant EVERY BRILLIANT THING [19 & 20 OCT], a life affirming show about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love. Finally, macabre favourites KILL THE BEAST bring us another award winning tale promising hilarity, mayhem and mystery: HE HAD HAIRY HANDS [3 NOV].

Also fusing formats, in his new show BEARDYMAN: ONE ALBUM PER HOUR [21-22 OCT], the legendary musician and comedian improvises a whole album live, based on your suggestions.More gigs this season include: SHURA [30 SEP]; SWEET BABOO [01 OCT]; SLEAFORD MODS [06 OCT]; THE ENID [20 NOV]; NICK PYNN AND KATE DAISY GRANT [22 NOV]; ALBERT HAMMOND JR [26 NOV]; and many more.

TOM’s Bar

TOM’s Bar is an important part of The Old Market, and we don’t like to think of it as ‘a run-of-the-mill, pricey theatre bar’. As such, our prices equal or better those of other local bars, our service is always personal, and unlike most, we promise to stay open after your show.

We’re proud to serve a great range of high quality refreshments. Welcoming staff serve a range of wines, draft beers, spirits, ciders and snacks.

TOM’s Bar also provides an intimate setting for smaller events, and for show previews too exclusive for the Main House next door.

We look forward to seeing you at TOM’s Bar soon!
