Life Cycle Works We have used the summer holidays to complete some life cycle works to the building. The dining room floor has been resurfaced and the boys’ accommodation block has been repainted with some added blocks of colour. The dining room, lower coffee bar and darts area have also been repainted and have had splashes of colour added which has added warmth and brightened up the white walls. The girls’ accommodation blocks will be repainted in the October holidays.

Macmillan Coffee Morning Papdale Halls of Residence held a Coffee morning on Friday 5 October. Several residents helped bake and decorate buns, staff also donated sweet and savoury items. We managed to raise £224.66, with more donations due in. Well done to all involved and thank you to everyone who donated, baked and attended.

Comfort fund Each year we ask parents to consider making a contribution of £10.00 towards the Residents Comfort Fund. Donations enable us to meet the requests of residents for various activities in the Halls as well as support our weekly activity planner. At present residents have been asking for more arts and crafts, new board games and DVDs. Our electric organ has also seen better days and is currently not able to be played. Donations to the fund would allow us to purchase a new organ/keyboard for all the residents to enjoy. For anyone wishing to contribute to this they can do so by cash, or cheque made payable to Papdale Halls of Residence, receipts will be issued for all donations.

Coming up next term Halloween Party There will be a Halloween party on Wednesday 31 October at 19:00, fancy dress is optional but encouraged.

Children In Need Papdale Halls will be organising lots of fun activities and competitions in aid of Children In Need, more details to follow.

Monthly Campaign Board The coming months will see campaigns on, Puberty, Salt and Sugar content, Diabetes.

Photography Competition The next photography competition theme is animals, all residents are encouraged to participate. Entries need to be printed, no bigger than A4 and no more than 2 entries per person. The winner will receive a certificate, £30 Amazon voucher and will have their photo framed and displayed in the Halls. Keep an eye out for closing date for entries.

Hoy Primary School comes to visit 8 pupils and their teacher came in to stay at Papdale Halls of Residence on the 18 September. The pupils were in Kirkwall to attend a hockey taster session at The Pickaquoy Centre. Many of the pupils had not stayed at the Halls before and were excited for the experience. They joined in with some board games in the evening and caught up with previous pupils/friends who have moved on to S1. This was a great opportunity for them to come and experience the Halls, in preparation for when they come in to continue their studies at Kirkwall Grammar School. We hope we see them again soon for other trips and transitions.

Anti-Bullying Policy During the next academic year, we will be reviewing and updating our policies and practices in relation to Anti-bullying to ensure that they meet the new national guidance and our own local guidance. We will be looking to work with parents and residents in the development of our own Anti-bullying policy and we would encourage any parents who would like to participate in this to get in touch by either emailing [email protected] or by phoning us on 01856876060. You can find the reviewed Education, Leisure and Housing Anti-Bullying Policy (2018) on our website. We would welcome views from all parents and carers on strategies to prevent, support and educate young people within Papdale Halls on the effects of bullying.

Funding for Books We recently applied for and were successful in obtaining £3000 funding for equipping the library with new books and for new materials for supported study. There will be a meeting with the residents to decide on which books to get and a survey will be taken to see what equipment will be best for supported study. Huge thanks must go to Cooke Aquaculture in supporting PHoR, and we will see the money is well invested for the residents. PHoR continues to seek funding from many sources and hopefully will be successful in some of them.

A message from Kirkwall Grammar School Parent Council My name is Charlotte Harrison and I am the Chair person for Kirkwall Grammar School Parent Council and the Orkney representative for the National Parent Forum of Scotland. I am very honoured to welcome you all to the Grammar School and hope your transition is a happy one.

The Parent Council works in partnership with teachers, parents and pupils to offer support wherever we can. Currently, we are supporting the school by fundraising for additional in-school counsellors and reviewing the support for learning resources. We have additional funds to support another development which will help hopefully, with attainment but we have not reached a decision yet as to what project we will undertake. These are just examples of our fundraising projects, but we are still working through bullying issues, mobile phone use and many other positive initiatives.

The Parent Council usually meets on a Monday evening at the school at 18:30 and the meetings are normally two hours. Tea, coffee and biscuits is always available! We generally meet twice a term, but our sub groups may meet at additional times throughout the term.

The Parent Council consists of parents from each year group plus a Papdale Halls representative, 2 co-opt teachers and the head teacher. We also have our committee members – chair, vice-chair, treasurer and secretary. From time to time we will invite a guest speaker or a Council official to the meeting. At our meeting in January, Kevin Denver carried out a presentation pertaining to Emotional Trauma and how it effects children and young peoples’ physical, mental, emotional and social well-being, and in turn how this effects their learning at school.

All our meetings are run with mutual respect, we encourage everyone to contribute in a safe confidential environment. If you think you would be interested in joining the Parent Council, please feel free to email me for further information, or speak with Claire Jacobsen at the Papdale Halls of Residence.

Again, I hope the transition for your child (children) is one of excitement and a positive experience. If you have any questions, please contact me at the email address below.

Kind Regards

Charlotte
