St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School

St. Mary’s is a warm, loving, Christ-centred community,

founded on our motto,

‘Through God’s Love we will Achieve’.

As a Catholic school we offer our children the opportunity

to grow as young people and encourage them to develop a

closer relationship with God, in an atmosphere of mutual

love and respect.

Ours is a positive learning environment, where all children

are valued and encouraged to achieve their potential.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)Curriculum

How your child will be learning

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding

through 7 areas of learning and development.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:

• Communication and language

• Physical development

• Personal, social and emotional development.

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas.

These are:

• Literacy

• Mathematics

• Understanding the world

• Expressive arts and design

At the end of the reception year children are expected to achieve expected levels called the “Early

Learning Goals (ELGs)

More information can be found on our class information page

Phonics

‘Through God’s Love We Will Achieve’

• Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills

• It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare

children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.

• It’s a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the

age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven

• There are six overlapping phases. A summary of how Letters and Sounds are taught can be

found on our website www.stmarysrc.worcs.sch.uk/children/reception/reception-class-

information/

• Children will cover Phase 2 to Phase 4 in Reception Class. In Phase 2 a letter sound is

introduced each day. It is important that children have good attendance at school to make

sure they do not miss out on learning these important skills.

Reading

‘Through God’s Love We Will Achieve’

• Your child will read with an adult in class at least once a week and a comment will be made in their

home-school reading diary.

• Children will be read aloud to every day. We also share stories in small groups.

• We expect children to read at home every day. At this early stage you play a very important role and

reading a story to your child every day really helps the children have a good foundation for

developing their own reading skills.

• We expect their home-school reading diaries to be signed when you have heard your child read.

• Book bags, reading records and home-school reading diaries must be brought to school everyday.

• Please do not put your child’s water bottle in their book bag as they make leak and cause damage to

their books.

• There will be a “Reading with your child” information meeting. Please complete the parent/carer slip

so I can arrange the most suitable time for this meeting.

ReadingBut most importantly, read to your child and encourage them to read with

you.

Read anything and everything, not just reading scheme books!

Real books with pictures, rhyme and enjoyable stories are crucial here.

Try to encourage your child to talk about the pictures, predict what will

happen next.

It is most important to make reading enjoyable for your child, so try to

relax and stop if either your child or yourself begins to gets anxious.
