NORFOLK ISLAND CENTRAL SCHOOL
AUWAS SKUUL NYUUSAUWAS SKUUL NYUUSAUWAS SKUUL NYUUS Volume No. 26 Week 10(B) 22 June 2015
Principals Report I would like to take the opportunity to personally thank Robin
Adams for the support that she has extended to me and to my
staff, our students and their parents during these past years. We
have significant programs running in our school that exist directly
because of her support and insight. As a school we wish to say a
big thanks to Ms. Adams and her team and all of the members of
the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly who have extended great
support to our school in past times. Good luck to everyone for the
future and your next chapter.
We had lots of things happening at the school last week.
Congratulations to Rowan Peterson and Nikki Beadman for their
wonderful organisation and commitment to the K-6 Careers
Market. This was a very successful event that could not have
happen without the support of our community members and
senior students who spoke to our students career paths.
Congratulations also to our debating teams and to the My
Kitchen Rules team. These event would not happen without the
strong support from our staff, Ms. Dixon and Ms. Johnston and
participating community members.
We have welcomed Mr. Ivan Gant into our school this week. Mr.
Gant is the Senior Pathways Advisor for NSW Public Schools and
is based in the Tamworth Office. Our discussions have been brisk
and with a variety of stakeholders. Our considerations have been
around the building of partnerships and processes that provide
opportunity for the students at Norfolk Island Central School to
participate in School Based Traineeships (SBATS) and
apprenticeships into the future. Thanks Ivan for your
consideration and commitment to our students and their
families.
GLIMPSE OF THE WORLD OF WORK FOR YEARS 3-6
Last Wednesday afternoon the students from Years 3 to 6 explored the world of work at a careers market specially designed for their age group and made possible by the generosity of several members of the Norfolk Island community and our own Year 12 VET students.
As part of the School to Work program, students are encouraged to find out about the careers that they might like to consider in the future and to see how all the things they learn at school can be applied later in their adult lives.
At the careers market, students found out about the airline industry by talking with two members of the Air New Zealand flight crew, as well as careers relating to the VRA (Ben Hayes); The response was very enthusiastic and each career
Customs and Quarantine (Snowy Tavener); the Hospital (David McCowan); Tourism and Travel (Glen Buffett); Hairdressing (Carla Dale); Hospitality (Pauline Porter); Supermarkets (Peter Walkinshaw); Construction (Will Partridge, Levi Richards-Singer; Jeht Nobbs); Aged Care (Siobhan Maxwell); Child Care (Suzanne Hardy); and IT (Seamus Donohoe, Logan Pitcher).
representative was bombarded with questions throughout the afternoon. What’s more, the students have given us a long list of other careers they would now like to learn more about, so we have certainly tapped into a real area of interest!
Thank you to all who were involved with the Mini Careers Market, you have given far more than the time you spent – we are so appreciative!

PART 3 - Being the Anchor in the storm.
Becoming a strong adult, means allowing children to them to
test themselves. Consider being their
anchor instead of their disciplinarian.” Sometimes teenagers
seem so disagreeable that you wonder
if the value your opinions or you. Research tells us that parents
matter a lot and it is hard to believe
but they rate parents over their peers, especially for all of the
important decision making and life
Choices (providing you have a good relationship).
How to Build a Relationship in Stormy Times – from Dr. Louise Hayes
Find ways TO BE together each day – not quizzing or questioning, just being peacefully in the same space.
Avoid too much eye contact, especially for males.
If they talk during these times, just listen, save judg-
ments, questions or rules for another time. Watch their favorite TV show (even if its not your favorite),
sit on the couch and watch together Drive them somewhere. Many parents say that they find
out more information in the car than anywhere else. Do chores together, peel the vegies, wash up, walk the
dog – anything as long as it is peacefully together. Take them for a coffee/hot chocolate, go to a sporting
game
In finishing this series, the key message is ‘to begin your rela-
tionship together’, build the relationship ‘bank account’ and
keep it topped up. This is a major component that will help
your teen sail through the stormy seas and grow into a strong
adult.

K-2 Lorax Costumes for School Concert Dear Parents,
As you may have read in the newsletter, we are performing “The Lorax” for our school concert. K-2 students will be the
animals in the truffalo forest. We are currently investigating costumes and have found some animal onesies at a reasonable
price - $20.
At our last concert, parental feedback was very positive about the purchase of a costume rather than you needing to go to
the trouble of making one. We think this is a great option and will begin the ordering process now to ensure we have them
on island in time.
Could you please send in $20 to the school office as you are able. If it is easier, you could pay for the costume by 4
instalments of $5. Costumes will be taken home by your child after the final night of the concert.
Thank you, Helen Pedel, Tanya Delaney, Michelle Hayes, Gill Brown
INJECTIONS — Phyllis Brown and David McCowan (Hospital Director), will be at

postponed last month due to the hospital being short staffed.

K -2 News End of term
Congratulations to all students in K-2 for a busy and hard working term. Reports will be handed out this week. Please see your
child’s home teacher if you have any concerns. We hope that all students have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Grandparents Old Fashioned Games Day – Week 10 Friday 26th of June – 10:30 – 12:30
As part of our unit Families Past and Present, K-2 classes are holding a Grandparents Old Fashioned Games Day thisFriday the
26th of June from 10:30 – 12:30 outside the library.
Hopefully grandparents have received their invitations sent out last week. We understand that students may not have
grandparents that live on Norfolk Island, but we should have plenty of grandparents that we can share! Please RSVP to your
child’s home teacher via the diary if a grandparent is able to attend.
The session will start with a morning tea to share with grandparents. All students are asked to bring a small plate of food to share
suitable for a morning tea (a family recipe or an old fashioned recipe would be fantastic!). Students will then rotate between
groups led by grandparents to enjoy some old-fashioned games such as elastics, marbles, skipping and so on.
Hihis Chocolate Game
Students in the hihis group have been working hard to learn their doubling facts so that the class can play the
chocolate game – involving two dice, knowing your doubles and chocolate! Please let Ms Delaney know via your child’s
diary if a suitable replacement needs to be organized for your child due to dietary issues. Thank you!

MKR Round 2
On Friday under the watchful eye of the previous MKR winner, Ashleigh Wilson, Year 11 Hospitality students where again in the kitchen
cooking up a storm as they competed in the 2nd
round of MKR. Judges Linda Gant, a visiting restaurant owner from Cassilis in NSW, was
joined by Kerri-Ann Brooks from Governor’s Lodge and Sarah Christian, representing this rounds sponsor, “The Butcher in the Mall”. The
judges were presented with restaurant quality dishes ranging from rice paper rolls,
pork belly and cheese cakes. Unanimously the judges announced the dessert made my
Adam Buffet and Shae Wilson, a Passionfruit Meringue Pie to be the dish of the day
and consequently saw the pair take out this round. Demonstrating consistency in the
preparation and presentation of their items was Ruby Menzies-Thompson and Paige
Adams, again collecting second place. Unfortunately Amy Elliott and Tori Reeves were
eliminated, allowing Leilani Shepherd and partner Josh Christian to progress to the
third round.
All students are to be congratulated on the effort displayed on the day and thank you
to the judges who gave up their time to attend the activity and provided invaluable
feedback to the students.
Working Bee
On Sunday the 28th June starting at 1:00pm a working bee to finish building the Stephanie Alexander Garden will
be held. Thank you to everyone who assisted yesterday in the building of the 2 garden beds. Many hands make
light work.
.
Our formidable Year 9/10 debating team of Amelia Murray, Vanessa Brown, Ivy Carr and Brancker
South defeated Dave Mayo's school Dorrigo High School today in the third round of the Premier's
Debating Challenge. This is their third debate in the zone, having already had one win against
Nambucca Heads A team and one loss to Nambucca Heads B team.
The topic was "That we should ban sexualised music videos" and we were the Affirmative. The
adjudicator commented on how well our team used their time and acknowledged that while he may
have disagreed with their side of the debate, they were more convincing in their model and rebuttal.
With two wins out of three in this zone, the team could still qualify for the region quarter finals. We will
find out if we have made it through to the quarter finals early Term 3. Congratulate the students when
you see them on their fantastic efforts so far.
Astronomy night for Science Club - Primary Students. Mr Pettit and Mr Pinson will be running an astronomy evening from 5.45pm to 7pm on Wednesday night
24th June, where students will have the opportunity to look through a telescope and focus on the
moon, stars and planets. Held in the quad outside the Science Lab. No cost but students must bring a
supervising adult, and make sure they dress warmly!
