Navarro’s Pre-Releasefriends purchased themajority of our bestPinot as futures atNavarro’s Deep Endbarrel tasting in August 2006. The2005 Deep End Blendwas aged in 70% newFrench barrels and the remainder in oneyear old barrels. Itwas bottled unfilteredand reveals hints ofviolets, dark cherryand strawberry pre-serves on toast.

The 2005 vintage was a great one in Europe and also exceed-ed expectations in Philo. We produced 44 separate vineyardlots of Pinot Noir and after aging them for almost a year we

chose the best barrels from the five best lots; we selected for finesse, complexity and depth. There was less wine produced than previousvintages due to a light harvest and most was purchased right out of the barrel well before there was any publicity. As wine competi-tion results rolled in we had reason tobeam. This bottling garnered four GoldMedals and was declared Best NewWorld Pinot Noir at the New World International Wine Competition and then Best Pinot Noir at the Los AngelesCounty Fair. Needless to say we wish wehad 667 cases rather than the paltry 67we have remaining. Gold Medal winner.(3 bottle limit)

Beyond expectations

Over the past thirty-three years a wood-pecker family has decorated the redwoodsiding on the winery with a lacework

of holes. We are reluctant to remove the planks. We enjoy the persistence of our feathered neighborsstoring acorns in the same barn where we squirrelaway casks of wine. Like them, spring is the time to

pull out our treasures: ninewines that have been hidden in Navarro’s cellars since theharvests of 2004 through2007. We have five new GoldMedal winning red wines; four are available in very limited quantities. Navarro’spopular house wines, CheninBlanc and Navarrouge are offered with case specials forless than $11 per bottle whichis sure to make you tap out atune. The 2006 dry Muscatdisplays seductive floral aro-

mas and a crisp finish; a stunning 2006 Cluster SelectWhite Riesling completes Navarro’s spring treasures. The bargain priced samplers and case specials are offered until April 30th on a first come basis.

another level where thegrapes weren’t wrinkled butthey weren’t as sweet as desired. Since the affectedclusters in the latter categorydidn’t display visual signs of a problem, Navarro’s pick-ing crew had to test each vine cluster by cluster. It was a long, acerbic day which gives us a tummy ache justthinking about it. Sour clusters were removed and thrownon the ground; the vineyard floor was littered with almost

half our anticipated crop. Theremaining sweet, fragrant fruitwas harvested the next morningand cold-pressed. The free-runjuice was fermented and agedin seasoned oak casks; we fin-ished it dry but made sure thatthe exhilarating florals linger.Try it with curry and your tummy will hum. Gold Medalwinner. By late September 2006 the nighttime temper-atures were steadily dipping to about 40°F.Cold nights are tolerable for a while but at

some point a vine seems to decide that the season is over and shuts down. In our climate Muscat candisplay berry shrivel: clusters stop accumulatingsugar after they begin to color and the fruit tastes

sour with little flavor. Usuallyit’s easy to spot because theclusters turn flaccid and theberries appear withered so wesimply don’t pick them. In2006 there were two levels ofberry shrivel: sour fruit thatobviously had no sugar and

A wrinkle in time

Two mature sheep; the minia-ture babydoll on the left is afull grown ram—not a lamb. Philo is often waterlogged fromDecember through March sowinter vineyard grazing ofsheep is unwise because it causes soil compaction. Sarahhas been breeding and expand-ing a flock of babydoll sheepwhich are less than 24 incheshigh at the shoulder; their sizeallows them to weed under thevines during the dry season saving Navarro lots of tractorfuel. As we replant or modifyour vineyards we are designingthe trellis systems tall enough to be miniature sheep compatible.

For decades JohnYoung has consistently delivered flavorful CheninBlanc grapes to Navarro. His vines are about fiftyyears old. The canopy on his trellis shades thegrapes from the middaysun but allows sufficientair circulation to avoid rot. Add CheninBlanc to your list of simple pleasures. Pop it open with whatever is fresh fromyour garden or a local farmer’s market. By the bottle it is a good deal and by thecase you can’t afford not to try it since it works out to only $9.75 per bottle.

that will remind you of the simple pleasure of bitinginto a ripe, juicy pear. Chenin Blanc is the third mostwidely planted grape in California but sadly most ofit has been planted where it is way too hot. Navarro’sChenin Blanc is coaxed into perfection on a chillybench above the RussianRiver where morning fogensures that the grapes’natural tartness won’t be blunted. Despite thewine’s straightforwardflavors the grape is notall that easy to grow in a cool climate. Thevariety is notoriouslythin-skinned making it

Normally Zinfandel is the second most important ingredient in Navarrouge butin this vintage that position has been

usurped by Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact CabernetSauvignon makes up 26% of this blend. We knowof Meritage wines that have less Cab. But don’t getus wrong; this is no claret. There is no Merlot orCabernet Franc lurking in the blend. Mendocino is

Navarro’s Old VineCuvée is a blend of the best barrelsfrom the best lots and paradoxi-cally this blend was completed bythe addition of four barrels fromthe last 2005 Zinfandel to arriveat Navarro’s crusher. These vinesare farmed by the Berry familyand were planted in the sixties. All were fermented in open topfermentors, punched down byhand to keep the tannins suppleand aged eleven months in Frenchoak barrels. Gold Medal winner.

Hang time has become a trendy term among winemakers. Conventional wisdom holds thatthe longer the time span between when the

berries color and when they are harvested the more flavorful the grapes. We have no controlled experimentsregarding hang time but we’ve noticed that sometimesthe best grapes are the first ones harvested…not the last. This wine is a case in point. The first Zinfandel grapeswere harvested on October 1 from a very old planting at Tre Sorrelle Vineyards, romantically located on Lovers Lane near Ukiah. The vineyard was plantedby the late Bruno Pallini andis now farmed by three ofhis granddaughters: Tia,Michelle and Debbie. Old vinesaren’t as vigorous as teenagers; they don’t produce as much fruit and they take longer to ripen it. The Petite Sirah andMourvèdre vines at Rosewood are now intheir mid-seventies so one can easily imaginehow they struggle toripen their crop. Onthe palate it reminds us of blackberries and driedred cherries; soft tanninssupport a wine that is solidbut not heavy. The Petite Sirah is amazingly full, especially given the modest alcohol. When we first arrived in Philo the then current textbooks denied the existence ofbotrytis in California; wine grapes until theearly 70’s were grown in warmer and drierclimates of the state. It never occurred to us that we would end up making sweetwine from rotted grapes.Thirty years later when-ever a cool summer presents us with a laterthan normal harvest, weleave our best Rieslingfields for last and prayfor wet, cool miserableweather. Botrytis cinerea’sgrey filaments are called conidia andpenetrate directly into the skin of the grape enabling the fungus to dehydrate the infected berries.

For the third time in a decade Navarro’s Cluster Select Late Harvest scored 98 points to win California’s best wine at the State Fair.

The luscious tropical fruit flavors are balanced by an unusually snappy, vibrant finish. What makes An-derson Valley Riesling so special is its bracing acidity.Since acid, sugar and alcohol all act to keep a winefresh, it’s no surprise that of all the wines we produce, this is the onethat will age the best. According to JancisRobinson in The OxfordCompanion to WineCabernet Sauvignon ages the best of any redwine but not nearly aslong as a white winemade from botrytizedgrapes. That has beenour experience too.
