This week

Dear Readers,

This week, we’re inspired by French desser ts, and thus pay tribute to two controversial French fashionistas from history: Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, and Queen Marie Antoinette. Join us on this sweet reverie as we try everything from chocolate lip balm (Try out) to sinfully sweet bath and body products (Tempt), to the most sindulgent desser ts in Dhaka (Tantalise). We discuss Coco’s contributions to couture in Trending, and in the Trial room, we talk cake with Eram Cooper about our favourite family bakery. Here’s hoping you live la dolce vita this weekend.

Sabrina Fatma AhmadEditor, Avenue T

We put a deshi spin on Marie Antoinette’s love of cakes and couture with this gorgeously embellished sari and this delicious halwa.

go with the cocoaKeep those bellos labios supple and chocolaty

This homemade lip concoction will not only soften your lips but it’s flavoured, flirtatious and fabulous to pucker up in.

You’ll need• Vaseline/petroleum jelly• Chocolate/cocoa powder• Olive/almond oil (or any

other essential oil)• A ceramic bowl• A container/an old lip balm

tin for storing the lip balm

First, take a spoonful of Vaseline in a ceramic bowl and microwave it for two minutes. It will take a liquid form when heated. Add two spoonful of cocoa or chocolate powder and a few drops of olive oil to it. Mix them together, stirring thoroughly in the ceramic bowl. Pour the mixture into a heat resistant container. Alternatively, you could use an old lip balm tin. Refrigerate it for 30 minutes; that should be long enough for it to solidify. Now just take it out and apply it on your lips. Don’t eat it though, seriously.

While Cook and crew get ready for the presentations for September (as it has been somewhat confirmed), we take a look at their most recent changes of their desktops and laptops. With a slight price drop and updated specs, you might be finally swayed to get yourself a Mac.

MacBook Pro with Retina Display (15-inch, 2014)The most significant change has been its boost in RAM, improving it from the 2013 version. It’s essentially the same machine, design and all, but the $100 price drop could be enough to jump on board. It still remains the best all-round premium laptop.

MacBook Air (13-inch, 2014)This machine has dropped to

around $1,000, bumping up its application and battery performances. It’s relatively a quick drop in price in less than two years for the base model.

MacBook Air (11-inch, 2014)Still considered the best ultraportable laptop, you can grab one of these just for 100 bucks less than the 13-inch version. While it has great battery life, you might find it difficult to operate with its smaller display.

iMac (21.5-inch, 2014)Just recently added to their line of Macs, the entry-level desktop is even more affordable than its siblings. But there’s

a catch. It’s pretty much a desktop version of a MacBook Air. Yes, that means the specs aren’t as powerful; nothing you would expect from an actual desktop. What you are getting is the signature iMac industrial design and build. There’s also the option to add upgrades to the base model, like a 1TB of space and 128GB Fusion drive. Now, we’ll just have to wait and see what new toys Apple brings us in September.

Apple’s Mac line has updates and slashed prices

The majority of us have chatting applications, like Whatsapp, to keep us updated with others but Asana keeps things a little bit more professional. This free to download productivity app for iOS and Android keeps you and your colleagues on the same page without having to e-mail each other. Rather than having a separate

group opened in your chatting app, you’ll be able to converse any work related topic, and immediately jot down a to-do list that everyone can view and check off.Asana is actually a cross-platform app that becomes convenient for your teammates to access tasks given and completed. The web app has a similar layout to what you would find in your Gmail inbox, while the mobile version is as simple as it can get. There’s no difficulty in navigating or assigning certain tasks to each other. The app also allows you to add or attach images and documents to each given task. Each due-date can also be viewed from either your Google calendar or your iOS calendar. But

you’ll have to edit the details within the app. You’ll be given the obvious notification, of course. The web version has a dedicated calendar, since the screen real estate is much larger.

It does have its limitations however, but it’s not too much of a hassle. The service allows up to 15 users, which should be just enough for a single team of folks at the office. You’re left with dragging, dropping, rearranging all the tasks to your liking so nothing seems out of place or order.

TeamworkKeeping the team in sync just got easier

You may have plenty of accounts, from social networks to online banking. Each one requires a password that is long and somewhat unique to keep away other users from breaching secure lines. Most of us like to think our passwords are good enough, but you’d be wrong. Some of us use the same password for many accounts or simply log-in with our Facebook accounts. While it may seem convenient and easy, it’s obviously not a wise thing to do. Then again, trying to remember 12 characters for each one of our web accounts is a pain in the back side.In order to keep things as safe as possible, here are a few tips to consider next time you log-in:

• One very neat trick is to create an entire password from a single sentence. For example, “I should have been born in 1972.” This phrase can result to: Ishbbi1972

• You can also download off-line password generators like Random Password Generator.

• Just to double check to see how secure your password is, you can visit How Secure is my Password? on the Internet. Just type in your password and the results will show how difficult it would be for a PC to figure it out.

• While many websites provide a password checker and verifications, it’s always good to enable a two-step-verification for the websites you visit.

• Keeping track is the real hassle. Use password managers like LastPass to keep track of all your accounts so that you don’t have trouble memorising them.

• To keep things hidden and in record in the easiest possible way, you can use apps like Evernote or simply write your passwords down in a diary of some sort, stashed away in a secure place.

The Saga is a product built on a simple yet highly effective formula, which is to offer a decently sized sedan at an affordable price. And what makes it even better is its well-honed driving dynamics that add an unexpected layer of enjoyment to the package.

ExteriorThe Saga has a stern appearance, which is mainly because of the covered 13-inch steel rims, unpainted door handles and side mirrors, and plastic covering the slots on the bumper that would otherwise be in use by a pair of fog lights in higher-spec models. Distinguishing it from the higher-spec models is the “SV” badge on the boot lid and the unpainted plastic garnish above the number plate. The ornamental finishing on the tailpipe has also been discarded. Appearance-wise, the SV makes no effort to hide its entry-level character. The truth is that, the Saga is a difficult car to fault for honesty to be sure.

InteriorOn the inside, it isn’t much different from the previous models. Seat cushions are significantly firmer than before, offering better support, but inadvertently raising the hip level to a point that makes clear visibility of the instrument cluster impossible. The new side mirrors come with integrated turn signals but they are still manually operated. Apart from these two niggles, there is little less to go wrong with the Saga’s ergonomics, although a car with such simplicity should not be difficult to get right to start with. The centre console has generous amount of spacing to accommodate small items, while the controls are placed within easy reach and painless to operate. Contrary to popular opinion about Proton’s build quality, the interior was solidly put together. Material choices are unsurprisingly not exactly plush, but you really can’t be expecting much from an entry-level budget car.

road rage

A completely new Saga that promises to keep things simple and sensible

Riding with monsters| Tausif Sanzum

As if the roads were not enough, the cars too have become trash cans. Oh mind it, these vehicles don’t even belong to the people who litter in them. Since littering the roads is too mainstream and keeping used tissues in the pocket takes up a lot of effort, so where exactly can these people riding in your car dump their mess? Stealthily hiding from you and with one quick movement of the hand, they squeeze it into an untraceable area in your car.

If cars had tongues they would scream out loud every time these people munch on a burger and leave behind the stench for the next couple of days. You should keep tissues in your car at all times, in case they don’t have anything to wipe their hands with, after devouring their food, your car seats might just have to become the napkin.

The windows are shut, the AC is on, and it’s time to light a cigarette. Even if you open the window, there is a high chance that the ashes would more or less remain in your car.

Now that they have littered and made your car a food smelling gas chamber, it’s time for goodbye. However, how can any farewell be without a little funfair. Literally banging the door in the name of closing it is the final nail in the coffin.

is it necessary to take care ofthe battery? Even if the manufacturer claims the battery is maintenance–free, it is essential that you still take care of it to extend its lifespan. You can start off by keeping the terminals clean. You can wipe the clamps with a dry rag or even use detergent as required. Also check the battery casing from time to time for any sign of damage. Bulges or cracks are signs that usually indicate that your battery needs replacement.

PerformanceMechanically, the Saga is yet to get a transformation. It is still powered by the same old 1.3-litre Campro IAFM engine stirring out 94HP and 120Nm of torque. Even the other drive train components, such as the running gear, and this includes brakes, suspension, and steering, they all remain unaltered as well.

SafetyOn par with safety, Proton implemented a number of improvements for all variants of the Saga. Making dual airbags a standard feature and adding a three-point seat belt for the centre passenger at the back. The entire vehicle has been structurally reinforced for a better rigidity. Most noticeable enforcements being a new set of bracings in the area separating the passenger compartment from the boot. Even though, further improvements are still possible, but this upgraded version has earned the Saga its three-star NCAP rating.

Uncomplicated and unpretentious, the Saga SV is a sensible choice for first-time buyers looking for a

fuss-free mode of transport. It is one of those fill-it-up-and-go type vehicles, that won’t have the buyers cutting their teeth out in the open road before finally upgrading to something a little bit more powerful or desirable.

My parents married me off to a man from a good family a few months ago. Everyone in this family has been kind to me, except my mother-in-law. I think she’s mentally unstable. In fact, I’m pretty positive about it. One day, she and I were home alone; I was sitting in the living room watching TV when she walks up to me with a knife and threatens to kill herself, and accuse me of being the murderer in the process. I snatched away the knife and ran to my room. After a few days she stows away all the knives from the kitchen and tells everyone she had a dream where I knifed her to death in her bed. She locks her room whenever we’re in the house alone - which is pretty much all day. She does not let me cook because she is afraid I’ll poison her food. What’s worse is that my husband actually believes her! He thinks I did something wrong and that’s why she has a bad impression on me. No one at home will even consider that she might need medical attention. What am I to do under the circumstances?

It may be difficult for you, but I would strongly advise you to go on a course, or find an excuse to take time off from the family. If this is not possible,

take a video of her behaviour at least of two or three instances and then show them to your husband. If no one wants to hear of her problem, talk to the family doctor. Surprisingly though, unstable people do behave oddly with more than one person. I understand your pain of not being heard by your husband but you’d be surprised at how many wives face this problem. Men become very tribal in these instances and for good or bad, they feel they have to defend people from their tribe no matter what. So, although it is painful, do not take it too personally. If you love your husband, there is always a way to communicate.Do contact me and let me know what happens.

It’s not that easy to form a one step solution to this problem. Given the current situation and the direction that things are headed in, it seems that it will not be too easy to meet your financial requirements now or in the future. You may have to accept the inevitable. If your wife has already gone down that path, it is hard to say she will ever change. It’s time you regain your sanity and your security. Right now we would suggest you take a time-out and live away from

your wife. See how you feel about her and if you want this relationship to continue. If she can move away from the life she has chosen, then she definitely deserves another chance. On the contrary, if she doesn’t, you’ll need to consider separation. Your security is what matters most right now.a

My wife and I have come from very humble backgrounds. We worked together and worked really hard to buy ourselves a home, a car and build a better life. I suffered from a spinal injury that has kept me bedridden for the last few months. All our expenses have been diverted for my health care and it’s getting difficult paying off our loans. Money is tight and life is not as rosy as it used to be. I feel helpless as I can’t really help my wife out either. There’s a distance between us that wasn’t there before and what’s worse is that I think my wife has started dealing drugs with her friends. I don’t feel like I can live like this anymore, I am losing my head. Should I approach the police or just suffer this life?

Not to say being sweet is bad or anything but sometimes it comes across as fake, if not always. It’s okay to be normal-nice (think: asking your colleague in the next cubicle if they would like a cup of coffee while you’re ordering for yours). But just don’t go out of your way and buy them lunch after they’ve just returned to their desks from the cafeteria. Steer clear of the office doormat territory.

Ulterior motivesWhen someone is being extra sweet and nice to you at work, the first thing that would naturally pop in mind is probably “What do they want?” That’s a question no one knows the answer to. They could have ulterior motives for all we know. The pervs are perhaps hoping to gain free access to your heart (read: other precious organs), while one of the ladies is trying to make you spill the beans about when you are promised your next promotion in exchange for that homemade red velvet cupcake she brought you this morning.

Sweet poisoningNot sure whether they’re trying to “raise the bar” by flaunting their generosity and niceties or hoping to make you confide in them because they’re so nice, but we’d rather be the average person with our own set of flaws.

The attention hoochieThis nugget right here is desperate to be liked and accepted, hence the overdose of sweetness. They will pass out without constant attention and can get really passive-aggressive if you don’t acknowledge them as friends because they have been trying so hard to please and impress you.

Friendly or phoneyYou could come across colleagues who are genuinely nice to you because they want to befriend you. Don’t negate their efforts, return the courteousness and keep some distance until you know for sure this one’s a true friend.

Our Agony Aunt is a life coach and a relationship coach as well as a corporate and organisational consultant. AA lives and works in Bangladesh but travels extensively around the world to attend seminars and see her clients

I’ve been dating this guy for about one and a half years now. Within six months of the budding of our relationship he’d moved to a different country. It is quite unlikely that we’d ever meet again and I’m pretty sure he’s not here for the long haul. I really like him and he likes me too - I can tell, but I don’t know if long-distance is the way to go if we’re not sure we want to end up together. He has never openly told me that he doesn’t want to marry me later on, but I know for sure he won’t. Should I break it off?

You seem to be sure about him not wanting to marry you, so are you keeping with him in the unlikely event that he will marry you someday? After six months are there any plans to meet again? I have little information, but from what you tell me, there is very little chance he will come back to you. I think it is worthwhile for you to make a last attempt to engage him into a conversation about your future together; if the answer is negative or wishy-washy, say goodbye, put your heart at rest and you will have no regrets. You will have tried. Remember, as the saying goes, the sea is full of fish.

The tradition of high tea can be traced back to the 19th century in Europe. We’ll never be royals, but, here’s how to update it for a contemporary Dhaka setting

Menu:FoodA common mistake which you can make while planning the menu for a high tea is in the quantity. You might want to serve a hundreds of different kinds of cuisines. However, “the more the merrier” ideology might not hold true at a tea party. Opt for finger food such as quiche, lemon tarts, Turkish delights, macaroons, pastries, chocolate mousse and chicken lollipop. A high tea would be incomplete without the traditional English cucumber sandwich.

DrinksSkip the regular chai latte for some fancy flavoured tea. Think KK tea’s Jasmine and Tulsi offerings, or Twinings Earl Grey or chamomile with brown sugar. Another fun riff you can try without breaking the mood is an assortment of flavoured ice teas to go with the scrumptious finger food.

The Eid frenzy has become a distant memory but we should never run out of options to meet our near and dear ones. Having an afternoon tea party is the perfect excuse to invite guests over to your place – it’s chic, classy and candid.

DecorWe’re talking about your best tea china, your fanciest table linens and super sophisticated silverware. The high tea is all about the luxe and the elegant, so consider this the appropriate occasion to go all out.If you’re reluctant to break out the delicate tableware, you can update your everyday china by pairing them with bright napkins and creative placemats. Or just load the table with candles and fresh flowers. The point is to provide your guests with a stunning visual display, something that makes them feel like dressing up for.

sweet poison

9Take care |

Termed as the world’s biggest silent-killer, diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases and more than one-third of patients having this condition is unaware of it. Adding to its deadliness are the symptoms that are almost too easily missed. If you have the following symptoms, you probably need to see a physician stat.

1 Excessive thirst and frequent urination. As the blood is

gummed up with abnormal levels of glucose, the kidneys do their best to eliminate this excess sugar - hence your need to use the rest room so often. Your concentrated blood and the loss of excess fluids from your body are the reasons behind you feeling thirsty at all hours of the day.

2 Excessive weight loss. If you’ve lost a lot of weight in an

abnormally short period of time - say 10 to 20 pounds in two to three weeks, chances are you are going to have to live with insulin injections for the rest of your life, however long that may be. Since the insulin hormone isn’t providing the cells with enough fuel, the body thinks you’re starving yourself and starts breaking down all your proteins to provide you with energy.

3 Excessive hunger. If you’ve been experiencing sharp pangs

of hunger in your tummy, you probably need to see your doctor. Since all your glucose is running around freely in your blood, incapable of being useful to your cells, your body makes you hungry to attain more of the energy it thinks it isn’t receiving.

4 Blurry, distorted vision. When the blood glucose concentration

gets too high, it changes the shape of the lens of your eye, thereby causing blurred vision. Although your vision will most possibly improve once your blood glucose concentration goes back to normal, but do not let this go untreated for too long. If you let this go rampant it will probably cause blindness and that is something completely irreversible.

5 Tingling and numbness. If you’ve been complaining about

tingling and numbness in your body’s extremities, your nerves are probably being damaged by all that glucose. Yes, it will get better if you start controlling your blood sugar, but make sure you don’t take too long as this damage may become permanent.

health

Your sweet tooth could punch a nail through your heart

| Adila Hoque

Now that you realise that you may have type 2 diabetes, here are a few ways you can keep it at bay - well, for as long as you possibly can, at least.

1 Lose weight. Shaving off even a few pounds can lower your risk

drastically.

2 Change your diet. Add more greens and veggies to your

diet, lose the red meat and try to include as much vinegar in your salads as possible. The acetic acid in vinegar is rumoured to inactivate certain starch-digesting enzymes, slowing down digestion of the carbohydrates.

3 Ditch the elevator and car. Diabetes patients need not be

reminded about their need to walk everyday - at least 35 minutes a day.

4 Indulge in coffee. Caffeine boosts your metabolism and

also contains many ions and antioxidants that help your cells absorb some of the sugar waltzing around freely in the blood.

5 Cinnamon is believed to lower blood glucose level. Certain

compounds in cinnamon are said to stimulate insulin receptors in your body.

6 De-stress and unwind. Stress causes your adrenalin to kick

in in large amounts, which is positively related to increasing blood glucose level to prepare you for action.

7 Get a good night’s sleep. Incorrect sleeping hours

interfere with enzymes that help keep your sugar level down.

Cake, anyone? With online bakeries sprouting all over social media like mushrooms, Signature Cakes is certainly one of the most cherished. Although it is quite new, its owners like to keep a low-profile to retain its exclusivity. Avenue T sits down with one of Cooper’s novelty cake artists, Eram Cooper, who gives us better perception into their line of work

| Adila Hoque

QHow did the idea of Signature Cakes come to you?

ASignature Cakes is treated less like a product and

more of a hobby by the owners of Cooper’s Bakery. Our team consists of some of the head chefs of Cooper’s: Eram Cooper, John Cooper and Simon Cooper, with Eram Cooper as the main artist. Since Cooper’s is already one of the most well known bakery brands in Bangladesh, we thought of introducing high-end cakes as one of its products - something a little more exclusive and niche. However, the more we conceptualised the idea the more it led to becoming a separate entity. Eventually, Signature Cakes came into existence in 2011.

Q Did you struggle when Signature Cakes was in its

infancy? Tell us a little about how you overcame them.

A Signature Cakes offers designer cakes in a variety of

indulgent flavours, the standard of which is comparable to any international artisan bakery. Initially we had difficulties selling the concept of fondant icing since most of our customers still prefer cream icings on their cakes. We also faced problems because our humid weather interfered with keeping some of the raw materials stable. However, since we are all experienced enough in terms of food safety (Cooper’s is certified in HACCP), we managed pretty well. All our raw materials

including fondant are imported from overseas and therefore they have better quality, greater stability and consistency.

Q What do you think makes Signature Cakes different

from other online cakeries?

AThere are actually a number of things that set us apart from

other online cakeries. We work in a 33,000sq feet factory and follow strict food safety guidelines. I believe we’re the dominating brand when it comes to designing big, fancy wedding cakes with pristine designs and cutting-edge finishing - their masses range from 20kgs to even 150kgs. Whatever the design or mass, we certainly have the ability and experience to make them. The level of neatness and consistency in our products is very strictly maintained and it is something we pride ourselves in. Our clientele is extremely exclusive and most of them know us by word-of-mouth. Last but not the least, we are very professional in terms of customer service.

Q What are your future plans for Signature Cakes?

A The future of Signature Cakes is promising as we aim to

take cake-making to a whole new level. We are constantly pushing ourselves to our limits

and creating new designs. It truly is an art, if you ask me. Basically, we turn anything and everything into a cake. Chasing decadence

Your first hand guide to finding the best desserts in the city

| N Anita Amreen

This week we go deep into the depths of our sweet desires and list some of our greatest guilty pleasures. From the best brownies to the best tiramisu, we scourge through the endless bakeries to give you a listing of where to find the best of the bests. Put on your largest pants and embrace yourself for a sweet journey that spans the entire compass of sweet decadence.

Basic chocolate cake - CFCWhat’s life without the comforting pleasure of the classic chocolate cake? Sweet, chocolatey and mush, this velvet queen is a staple for a reason. We’ve chosen CFC’s molten chocolate cake for holding the honour of being the best classic chocolate cake for being just so downright simple and yet so perfect. Whether it’s a break up or a birthday, when there’s CFC’s chocolate cake, there’s no such thing as unresolvable cravings.

Chocolate Brownie –

North End Coffee Roasters

There are several brownies that people have been raving about but none matches the intensity of North End’s brownies. They really make their desserts as if it’s nobody’s business. Consisting of a light, thin crust, once bitten into, the brownie reveals chocolatey insides that bring alive all your fudge fantasies. It’s immensely chocolatey but never so much that you can’t reach for seconds. Once you’ve downed their brownies, give their cinnamon rolls a try.

Red Velvet Cupcake –

Silver Lining

Now there are many bakeries selling Red Velvet cupcakes, with some being better than most. However, none of them come close to Silver Lining’s Red Velvet Cupcake. It is as delicious as the heady feeling of first love. She is the epitome of untamed indulgence – deep buttermilk flavours, a seductive velvety texture and the final caress of silky cream cheese frosting. A must try.

Tiramisu – Tastebud

Tastebud offers you a generous serving of a divine Tiramisu that tastes just right. Not soggy or too sweet, their Tiramisu may not be a replica of the traditional form of this Italian dessert, but it sure is the next best alternative. The creamy mesh of light flavours with the wonderful hint of coffee will just about do you in.

Cheesecake Brownie –

Tabaq

Flooded with numerous rave reviews on FoodBank, Tabaq’s cheesecake brownie has turned out to have a cult following among dessert lovers. Extremely rich, these brownies have more of a dense mousse like texture that instantly melts in your mouth. The swirl of light cheesecake mixes wonderfully with the brownie giving you this instant hit of cheesy-chocolatey high.

Mango Pie – Brews & Bites

As sweet as honeyed nectar – Brews & Bites’ Mango Pie needs to be tried to be believed. This giant sized, bright orange pie lazily sits atop a crumble crust, as a frosty white cream threatens to slide off its soft folds. It’s the type of pie that can make chocolate lovers convert forever and follow the religion of Mango Pie Loving Dessert Aficionados. If you think Tabaq’s Mango Crumble is the best mango dessert you’ve tried, wait till you try the winner from Brews & Bites.

Novelty cakes –

Silver LiningWhen it comes to novelty cakes, no one serves you anything as outrageously beautiful as Silver Lining. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail to each of their hand crafted novelty cakes are unreal. While it is a delicious punishment to just look at their beauties, what really makes them “take the cake” in this Best of Best list is the actual taste of the cake itself. Like your dream woman, these cakes taste just as good as they look. And that, my friends, is an anomaly in the novelty cake world.

The epitome of chic, Gabrielle Chanel, better known as Coco, wasn’t exactly born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Biographers have accused her of being a liar, a home-wrecker and even a Nazi collaborator. You can make your own mind up about the illustrious woman, but no one can deny the impact Coco has had on the history of fashion

| Sabah Rahman

Chaneling Coco

Influenced by astrology and a big fan of camellias and the number 5, the woman who brought us Chanel no. 5, still an iconic fragrance, also introduced “the little black dress” to the world. Where would we women be without our go-to black dresses?

The tweedUnless you’ve been living under a rock, you have probably seen women in person or in the media sporting the classic Chanel tweed. Considered a power suit, the trademark look was invented after Coco borrowed her man’s tweed sportswear and was inspired to make clothing out of it for

the ladies. Jackie Kennedy was one of the biggest fans of this suit. The most modern way to wear the look these days would be to layer a tweed blazer over a simple white tee and pair it with denim.

The pearls

Coco was, after all, the lady who said, “A woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls,” and she lived by the notion. Hardly ever seen without multiple strands, she also incorporated it into her designs embellished with the two linked “C”s. She encouraged ladies to mix real diamonds with faux pearls so they could look fabulous without going broke.

Thanks CocoWe’d like to take a moment to thank Mademoiselle Chanel for a few things:

1. With hard to miss chain-belt straps, the quilted Chanel purses have inspired tons of companies to make replicas and almost every fashionista has a few in their closet.2. Jersey, a fabric that was used exclusively for men’s underwear was refashioned into comfortable clothing for women.3. Coco made trousers acceptable and fashionable for the fairer sex.

Possibly regarded as the best looking actor in the French film history, Mr Delon’s style was second to none. While the Americans boasted the likes of James Dean and Marlon Brando, France had the most stylish of the lot. There are certain signature items in French fashion that you can pull off yourself. You may not have Delon’s handsome features and attitude but you can definitely sport the key elements in French flair.

Four seasonsThe Parisians have some sort of fetish with the scarf. No matter the season, a scarf is a staple in French fashion. For winter, you’ve got your cashmere, while the warmer months bring in the lighter and more breathable fabrics to wrap around your neck. Don’t even think about wearing a tie, unless you’re walking into a 3-star Michelin restaurant or someone’s wedding. Not so FrenchIt’s a bit surprising to know the epitome of classic Americana, Ralph Lauren, is popular in Paris. Mr Woody

Allen might have indirectly induced this pleasure with his hit films. Stock up on button down Oxford shirts and chinos. They actually suit those posh restaurant outings.

The right fitAs any other stylish city, everything must be fitted. There is, like quality, no compromise when it comes to the cut of the cloth. The men like their clothes slim-fit, regardless the occasion. It may be called the City of Light, but the overall look is still toned down. It’s all about the monochrome, 50s inspired wardrobe. Take a look at French New Wave cinema, like the classic film À bout de souffle (Breathless). You can pick up a few tips from Jean-Paul Belmondo, another one of France’s best.

I have a birthday coming up soon and I wanted to make it as stylish as pos-

sible for my guests. Facebook invites or by phone doesn’t seem too stylish to me. How should I invite my guests?

Try neither. If you really want to keep things stylish and classy, stay

old fashioned. How about written or printed invites sealed in a classy and elegant envelope? No, not the wedding kind. Glitter and gold are for teenage wannabe vampires. Think minimalistic, black and white theme to keep things simple and vintage. Stick those suckers into solid black envelopes, while all the details are hidden inside. It creates a slight mystery and excitement for the recipient. And there’s always that nostalgic moment of receiving something in the mail or a surprise dropped in front of their doorstep. Get the party started right.

My hair isn’t as great as it used to be in my youth. I’m in my mid 30s and it seems I’ll be going bald

very soon. I was wondering if it’s better to have longer hair to add some kind of volume and hide certain parts of my scalp, or do I shave it all off?

The shorter you cut your hair, the less obvi-ous your hair loss will

be. The rule is quite simple on ageing: do it gracefully. Younger men can have the same problem too, regarding so many negative factors damag-ing the scalp. It’s better to keep your hair short or cropped from now on. Not only are you “hiding” the baldness, you’ll actually look more sophisti-cated. Keep things trimmed and lined up, as adding well-groomed facial hair can round off a darn good look. Let go of your past glories, and bask in the ones to come.

Style, the Parisian way

Je ne sais quoiThe French have always regarded themselves as the leaders of fashion, taking elegance to a pedestal on a completely different level, unwavering through time. Their footballers, for example, are known for their flair, on and off the pitch. Even Mr Sarkozy’s wardrobe is something to envy; imagine a nation infested with stylish politicians. The French know how to live life while flirting along the lines of confidence and arrogance. The most infuriating thing is they do it so damn well. The Parisian man has a distinctive flamboyant swagger, so here are some tips in the French way of dressing.

Second to noneFrenchmen take immense pride in their culture, which is reflected through their clothes. They simply

do not compromise on quality. To the locals, quality is always more important than quantity. Their style is driven through the art de vivre, which means clothes aren’t the only thing they are investing in. Going to the market for fresh groceries or simply having a nice meal with the family is something they take pleasure in. All of this with panache.

Classic wardrobeBlack and neutrals are in order for colours of the closet. Sticking to black, white, grey, brown and navy is your safest bet. This is where the quality factor comes into play. If

you have the right item in the best fabric and a neutral colour, the combinations can be endless without anyone noticing.

The originYou know the whole blazer with jeans look? They started it. Like the Italians and sprezzatura, the Parisian man throws on looks together like they’re effortless. Mix and match tailored blazers with dressy jeans and untidy shirts to pull off the Parisian look. The same goes for the reverse. You can pull off the same style by pairing a worn leather jacket with a crisp dress shirt or trousers.

Can’t get enough of sweet scented fragrances? Even though Burberry Brit has been around for a while, this one is perfect for the girl who loves sugar and spice with the sugared almonds, vanilla and mahogany elements.

Blemishes can be tricky. Even if we are immaculate with our beauty regimens, they can pop up every

now and then - that time of the month, hormones, genetics and so on. However, there are some sneaky culprits that can make you break out. Your mobile phone for instance. Do you know how grimy that screen can get? Clean it on a regular basis with a cotton ball soaked in some alcohol based anti-bacterial solution like Hexasol. Just make sure your phone is turned off first. Other culprits include your pillowcases and towels. Are you changing your cases often enough? We tend to sweat while we sleep and laying our faces down on the same pillowcase can clog our pores. When it comes to towels, use a separate one for your face. The last thing you need to remember not to do is to constantly touch your face. Fingertips can carry a lot of germs, but you know that. Always wash your hands before touching your face. Especially before make-up application.

| Sabah RahmanNo matter how tempted you are, Do NOT eat these products at any time

candy crushI am insane when it comes to my facial cleansing regimen. I wash my face twice a

day, I try to eat healthy, and do everything possible to avoid getting blemishes. Yet, there they are. What am I doing wrong?

It’s been a while now since beauty companies have been manufacturing products that resemble exquisite desserts. What’s even better is the fact that most of these gems taste like the real thing - sugary, decadent confections. Let’s take a look at what we can get our hands on at some local shops:

Lather up with Bath and Body Work’s Brown Sugar and Fig Shower Gel. The warm scent of caramelised brown sugar, with middle notes of Vanilla Orchids will surely be a delicious way to wake up. The bonus is that there is coconut milk in this baby as well, so it’s quite moisturising.

It doesn’t get any sweeter than Candy Baby Fragrance Mist by Victoria’s Secret. If you love the smell of cotton candy, this one is for you.

3

MAC Taste Temptations Lipglass is one of their special editions and features three mouthwatering shades. Long wearing, with the deep pigments that MAC is so famous for, the candied flavours make them all that much more covetable.

4

Chanel Rouge Coco is one to die for. This is a lipstick for women who are afraid to wear lipstick. The balm like texture that’s scented with a winning combination of raspberry, rose and vanilla smells as good as it looks, and deserves to be in every lady’s beauty bag.

6

Bringing you flavours like Sweet Mango, Vanilla Cake and Tropical Punch, Jordana’s Sweet N’ Smooth tinted lip balms will have you licking those lips all day.

For those with a sweet tooth

The sun-drenched, dark-skinned, soft spoken people of Bangladesh, in all occasions and festivals, treat themselves to a plethora of sweets that smell like home. A popular sweet seen in almost every household at any celebration, “Shondesh” is as uncommonly soft and snowy as the fondest of dreams; an elixir, a cure for all ailments, like an answer to all prayers. They are compelling in their plainness; fancy words don’t come into play. Making shondesh (ricotta fudge) doesn’t get any easier!

Ingredients:• 2lb ricotta cheese, locally

known as chhanna. Make your own cheese (procedure described below) at home or use store-bought products. The homemade version is more delicate in flavour

• 2tsp ghee (clarified butter)• 2 cardamom pods• Milk powder (optional) • Sugar/honey to taste• Crushed nuts eg almonds,

pistachio (optional)

Method:In a nonstick pan, over very low heat, add ghee; heat ricotta cheese, a handful of sugar, cardamom pods, milk powder, stirring constantly. Cook for about 20 to 30 minutes or until the mixture begins to separate from the sides of the pan. Remove from heat, make the desired shapes using molds while the mixture is slightly warm. Sprinkle crushed nuts on top for a little extra flavour. Chill for a few hours before serving. Refrigerate the rest of the sweets.

That crimson red fantasy glaze at the centre of each shondesh-flower is a dot of liquid food colour.

How to make ricotta cheese: Slowly bring 2 litres of whole milk to a rolling boil in a heavy pot over moderate heat, stirring occasionally to prevent scorching. Add 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, then reduce heat and simmer, stirring constantly, until the mixture curdles for about 2 more minutes. Pour the mixture into a sieve over a large bowl and let it drain for 1 hour. After discarding the liquid, chill the ricotta, covered; you can store it in the refrigerator for 2 days.

The silky, satiny, velvety and luxuriant pumpkin-carrot halwa is nothing but a sweet surrender! A dreamy dessert that Bangladeshis have been worshipping for ages. They make this fudge type sweet with a lot of warmth, love and thousands of years of cultural (culinary) pride. It only takes less than 30 minutes to prepare and serves 4.

Ingredients:• 450g/1lb pumpkin and 2 large

carrots• 550ml/1 pint coconut milk

(Regular whole milk will do just fine)

• 1tsp cardamom seeds, crushed• 2tbsp clarified butter or ghee• 8tbsp sugar

• 3tbsp lightly roasted nuts eg halved cashews, flaked almonds, and pistachio (optional)

Method:Trim, peel and finely grate the vegetables. Combine them with milk and cardamom in a large non-stick frying pan. Heat gently and bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Cook until the vegetables are tender and almost all the liquid has evaporated, stirring frequently as the mixture thickens. Next, add butter, sugar, nuts and stir well. Once you’re done, spread the halwa out on a shallow pan to cool. When cool, garnish with nuts and cut it into desired shapes and serve.
