I personally enjoy travelling, and feel very safe and secure when I am making a purchase or enjoying a nice meal, no matter where I go. I set up my Travel Notices and make note of ATMs in the state that I am visiting. Travel Insurance is in place and my budget is outlined for the trip.
In this issue, you will find tips and reminders about how to prepare for your adventures. We hope that you take the time to review your budget, your insurance, and your payment needs before you take off.
Be sure to read about the following:• Set up Travel Notices – Use your VISA® Debit Card or VISA Credit Card without
any service interruptions and help us watch for fraudulent activity. • Purchase Travel Insurance – Be ready when the unexpected happens, such as
a medical emergency or trip interruption. • Vacation Club Account – This is an easy way to save throughout the year for
your vacation. Now is the time to start saving for next year’s trip. • Budget for Expenses – Make a budget ahead of time and stick to it. Learn
some new tips in this issue.
Also remember to check out our website before you leave for a listing of CU$ ATMs and CO-OP ATMs that will not charge a surcharge when you use your Members 1st VISA® Debit Card. As a member, you have access to thousands of ATMs nationwide so that you can withdraw cash when you need to. THE CREDIT UNION STUDENT CHOICE LINE OF CREDIT HELPS BRIDGE THE GAPFinancing an undergraduate education becomes more costly each year. Unfortunately, there are often gaps left between a student aid package and the actual cost of a college education.
The Credit Union Student Choice Line of Credit makes it possible to finance the gaps that remain after any grants, scholarships, and federal student loan alternatives. Our program has no loan origination fees.
For details or to apply, go to members1st.studentchoice.org. You can also contact our Specialty Loan Administrator, Tiffanie DeVan, at (800) 283-2328, ext. 6017 or [email protected]. We also invite you to attend one of our upcoming financial aid seminars. (See listing below.)

20’sTip #1: Establish a positive credit history. A good way to establish good credit is to get a credit card, use it often, and pay off the ENTIRE balance ON-TIME, every month. Paying before the due date and avoiding interest charges is critical to your financial health.
Tip #2: Don’t be in a rush to move out of mom and dad’s house. If you have landed a job, take the time to get a strong financial foundation and establishing savings, before you move out on your own. Stay focused on paying down any student loan debt you may have.
30’sTip #1: The 30’s are when you may become established in a career and ready to purchase a home or finance a wedding. Before taking the next step, review your credit and current debt load.
Tip #2: If you are ready to purchase a home, determine how much you can afford to spend. This might be very different from the amount you are approved for by a lender. This is a big commitment. Make sure you take your future lifestyle into consideration, so that you do not feel cash strapped.
40’sTip #1: Be careful with the upgrades. You may be advancing in your career and ready to buy a bigger house, or nicer car, because things are going well. This is a slippery slope, so be careful!
Tip #2: Review your emergency savings. You may be socking away some money, but is it enough? There are plenty of “rules of thumb” for how much you should have in savings. Three months of expenses? Six months? This is a personal decision with no right or wrong answer.
50’sTip #1: As retirement gets closer, review your debt load and retirement savings. Most of us do not want to enter our retirement years with debt. This is the decade to avoid getting further into debt, paying off existing debt, and increasing retirement savings.
Tip #2: Don’t overextend yourself helping others. You may have kids in college and aging parents, but you should never lend money that you need yourself.
60’sTip #1: This is the decade when most people decide to retire. Before retiring, be sure to find out exactly what your income will be and review your budget. The Social Security Administration has a retirement benefits estimator available at ssa.gov that can be used to estimate income.
Tip #2: For most of us, housing is the biggest expense in our budget. If you are a homeowner, even if your home is paid in full, there are property taxes, upkeep costs, and utilities. Consider if the home you are living in is the right fit for you as you age.

FINANCIAL TIPS BY AGE GROUP – DECADE BY DECADEThere are two “golden rules” in personal finance that apply, regardless of how old you are: 1) live within your means, and 2) look forward to the future and save for it.
These are two very simple concepts, but very powerful. If actually applied to your everyday life, they can mean the difference between being constantly stressed about your finances, and feeling secure and in control. Below are some more specific suggestions by decade.

YOUR VISA® DEBIT CHIP CARD WILL BE
ARRIVING SOON!
Watch the mail for your new VISA® Debit Chip Card to arrive!
How does it work? Chip cards and terminals work together to protect in-store payments. A unique one-time code is generated behind-the-scenes that is needed for the transaction to be approved - a feature that is virtually impossible to replicate in a counterfeit card.
Several merchants in Southcentral PA are already providing terminals for you to make your purchases using the chip feature in your new card. Look for signage at the time of purchase. More and more stores will be adding this feature.
Note: Remember to update those merchants with whom you have set up automatic payments – they will need your new Debit Chip Card information as soon as possible.
May/June 2016 | 11
HOW TO USE YOUR VISA® DEBIT CHIP CARDLook for the new payment terminal with the opening at the end of the machine.
If the merchant has not converted to a new terminal, you can simply swipe your card and complete the transaction like you do now.
STEP 1:Insert the chip end of your card into the terminal
(instead of swiping).
STEP 2:Follow the prompts on the screen to
complete your purchase.
STEP 3:Keep your card in the terminal to complete your purchase.
STEP 4:
Don’t forget to take your card with you when you leave

1.90% APR*
*The 1.90% Annual Percentage Rate (APR) on Balance Transfers using the specific form or online submission is a “Discounted” rate that will be in effect from the time of the posting of the balance transfer to your card account for six consecutive billing cycles afterwards, which will be considered the promotional period expiration date of that specific balance transfer. After the expiration of your “Discounted” rate the remaining unpaid portion of the original balance transfer request will be subject to your normal APR as outlined on your monthly statement based on the specific Members 1st FCU credit card selected. Current rates range from 8.25% APR to 18% APR. Consumer Cards (Business Cards are ineligible) may have up to 10 individual balance transfers open at any given time period. If you default through becoming 60 days or more delinquent we may increase your APR on the balance transfer and other balance amounts as defined within the cardholder agreement and disclosure, which is provided upon card issuance and available online at www.members1st.org. All payments received on your account in excess of your minimum payment requirement will be applied first to the highest rate balances, secondly to the lowest rate balances and finally to new purchases. All rates are effective as of April 1, 2016 and this offer may be withdrawn at any time. Other restrictions or conditions may apply. You may not pay off your current Members 1st loans or lines of credit by using this balance transfer option. For current rates, fees and other cost information, please reference the Visa Balance Transfer disclosure or contact the Members 1st FCU Card Services Group at (800) 283-2328, ext. 6035.

KEEP YOUR BUDGET IN MIND WHEN PLANNING A VACATIONVacations don’t have to be expensive to be memorable and fun. Here are some suggestions to plan a successful vacation.
May/June 2016 | 15
CREATE A VACATION BUDGETDecide how much money you can afford to spend on a summer vacation. Start by updating your monthly budget. Review your income, expenses, and debt obligations and be sure to set aside money for emergencies. Then decide how much you can direct towards a summer vacation. Add up the total estimated costs of your trip in advance, before making final plans. Then, put away money each month into a savings account. A Members 1st Vacation Club is perfect for saving. See page 6 for details.
INVOLVE YOUR FAMILYOnce you’ve determined how much money you can afford for a vacation, decide how best to spend it. Include your family members to decide on where to go and what to do. If your budget is limited, consider an at-home vacation like a grand picnic with families, friends and neighbors. You could also host a pool party at a local pool or visit tourist attractions in your area.
RESEARCH YOUR VACATION OPTIONSUse the internet to get information on sightseeing, tourist attractions, and discount travel and lodging. Ask travel agents for information on seasonal discounts. Read the latest travel guides available online, in newspapers, and through local visitor and tourism associations. Get advice from friends and relatives who’ve traveled to places your plan to visit. They can help direct you to places that are fun and affordable.
PLAN YOUR ITINERARY IN ADVANCEMap out your daily activities and routes to ensure that you’re staying on-course and on budget. Unplanned activities can often amount to unplanned spending. Before you know it your budget will be busted.
HAVE A CREDIT PLANCheck credit card balances on your accounts well before you travel. Make sure they have sufficient available funds to cover the amount that you plan to charge. Credit cards are helpful on the road. They’re safer than cash because they can be replaced if lost or stolen. They can make it easy to overspend, though, so be sure to limit your charges to budgeted expenses. Also, limit credit card cash advances. This is expensive cash because you could be assessed a flat fee (not with a Members 1st VISA®) and some other credit cards charge interest as of the date the advance is taken. If you need cash, use your ATM or debit card instead. Only use one or two credit cards and be sure to keep all receipts and charges in a ledger. When you return home, pay off the credit card charges using the money that you saved for the vacation.
