From the Principal…
We have scheduled an OPEN EVENING for Wednesday April 10, 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
This is an opportunity for families considering their options for schools to meet us, check out the college buildings and ask questions of staff and other parents. There will be a display of the building plans in the Resource Centre to add to the information about the varied and dynamic learning opportuni-ties available for children from Birth to Year 12 across our College. We invite you to bring your friends and share our College with them. Our Governing Council held their Annual General Meeting last week, and we have elected a new Governing Council: Mr Greg Hillman continues as Chairperson Mr Peter O’Dea continues as Treasurer Continuing members: Kathryn Vassallo John McCallum Sarah Phillips Margaret Couchman Dana Wortley Glenn Fuller New Members: Michelle Galloway May Faiumu Greg’s plans for the Council in 2019 are to develop a Strategic Plan for our growth as a College, and to gain Government support for the expansion and improvement of our facilities. My role as Principal is to support the overall development of our school community. I look forward to working with you, your children and staff members to create a College of which we can all be very proud; and one in which your children will thrive. On Tuesday evening, March 5, we were delighted to have the Carly Ryan Foundation present a parent session on cyber safety. This followed sessions with our students, in which online behaviour was examined and discussed. URGENT APPEAL!!
We are desperately trying to find families willing to host one or more students from Cheltenham Secondary
College in Victoria for four nights during the Cheltenham Exchange to be held from June 24-27th.
Do you have a spare bit of floor space or perhaps a spare bedroom or rumpus room?
If you would like to volunteer to be a host family, please con-tact Sue in the McKay Ave front office. Sue can give you all of the information you require.
Don’t wait—time is running out and if we cannot billet all of the visiting students the Exchange may be jeopardised.
Hosting can be a very rewarding experience and the Exchange cannot run without your help.
In the Reception classes we use a multi-sensory approach to learning letter sounds, or
Body, Hands, Mind. The students use their bodies to do actions for each letter of the
alphabet, sing songs about letter to embed the sounds, manipulate materials to support
letter formation and focus on visuals to embed letter recognition.
These activities develop pre reading and writing skills and form a solid knowledge base
for our readers and writers of the future.

LEARNING LETTER SOUNDS
As a parents of the school for 15yrs we have had
billets every time it was in Adelaide. Having a billet or billets was so much fun. We got to meet some wonderful students from Cheltenham. And have now got life long friends. Having billets gives you a chance to be
more involved in the exchange and just remember that if there are no billets there is no Cheltenham. If you don’t have room (as we did one year) put a blow up
mattress on the floor and the kids are more than happy to sleep there. So come on families … get billeting.

Avenues College proudly stood united with other schools across Australia on Friday 15 March 2019 to mark the ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.
The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence provided the College with the opportunity to stand together on this important issue and help ignite thoughtful and positive discussions about bullying and the ways we can work as a community to address it.
Our message was that bullying and violence in or outside the classroom are not okay at any time and that through positive action we can make a real change.
Avenues College ran a number of thought-provoking initiatives to celebrate the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.
These included:
Carly Ryan Foundation presentations on online safety and healthy relationships to students from Years 5 to Year 12
Students and staff across the College wearing “Bullying No Way! Take a Stand Together” wrist bands sending a positive message to our school community that bul-lying and violence will not be tolerated

Workshop on cyber-bullying for year 8 students
Brainstorm Productions performance of The Flipside to Middle Years students encouraging young people to think carefully before they ‘post’, ‘snap’ or sign up.

At Avenues College we are dedicated to supporting our students and families and will continue to ensure that we provide safe and supportive environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence. As part of our commitment to providing a safe and supportive school community our student leaders have worked with us to develop and implement the College’s Anti-bullying and Harassment policy which promotes a bullying prevention message.

Port Adelaide/Enfield Council is extending the Youth Chill Zone to run during school terms—Tuesdays from 3-5pm. There are a lot of young people out there who feel iso-lated from their peers, experience social anxieties, find it hard to meet new people, or are just looking for something fun to do . The Youth Chill Zone aims to provide a safe, welcoming, relaxing space for young people to meet new people and try new things. There will be snacks and refreshments provided and activities such as board games, Nintendo switch, virtual reality technology, creating things/characters on the 3D printer,& music mixing in our new media room . Our team was made up from representatives from Years 8 through to Year 12. They com-peted in numerous events over the day of competition with great enthusiasm and spirit! The team represented our College fantastically—well done to all of the participants!!

Year 10 students
with the cast of
‘Macbeth’
English Students Get a Taste of Live Theatre.
2019 began with a bang with a large number of year 10’s, 11’s and
12’s attending live theatre performances as part of Adelaide’s Fringe
Festival. Year 11 and 12 students attended ‘Blackrock’ and the year
10 students went to see ‘Macbeth’. It was great to see these texts
being brought to life. The year 10 students especially enjoyed the
chance to speak with the cast of ‘Macbeth’. A huge thank you to all
the teachers involved in organizing this and to the students also,
who were the perfect audience members.
Following the success of the 2018 season where we had the most play-ers ever registered for Broadview Juniors, the 2019 season looks to
be even bigger.
We are looking for players to finish filling 3 of our Premiership Grades.
