Rising utilization of
composite materials calls
for urgent attention to the
aviation training industry
From the f irst f ibreglass
materials used in Boeing 707 in
1950s to the modern Boeing 787
Dreamliner, the utilization of
composite materials in aviation
has been rapidly developing,
particularly over the past
decade. How ever, despite
signif icantly reducing aircraft
w eight, composite materials are
less ‘predictable’ than the
aluminium-based components
and are harder to be examined
for various cracks and f law s.
As a result, composites remain a
topical issue w ithin the MRO
community, particularly in the
segment of maintenance training.
At the daw n of the composite
era they accounted for a mere
several percent of all
components in commercial
aircraft. How ever, over the past
20 years jet fuel prices have
risen from approx. $23/bbl. to
$125/bbl thus triggering a natural
demand for aircraft w ith more
effective fuel systems. This,
amongst other factors, has

Embraer Executive Jets Delivers First Signature Series™ Phenom 300 to
NetJets
Almost a year has passed since
the French authorities released
their f inal report on the Air
France Flight 447 crash in the
Atlantic Ocean in June, 2009.
According to the issued report,
the pilots had lacked the
understanding of how to
address aircraft stall. During
1979-2009, inappropriate crew
responses contributed to over
46% of all Loss-Of-Control
(LOC) accidents causing more
than 2800 fatalities.
Unfortunately, dangerous
aircraft conditions like aircraft
upset cannot be avoided or
resolved solely by new cockpit
technologies, regardless of how
sophisticated and technologically
advanced these might be. Once
again the attention must be re-
directed to the issue of human
factor in aviation.
According to a Boeing report,
LOC accidents remain the main
critical factor in the commercial
aviation, corresponding to
approx. 33% of all fatalities. One
of the main factors w hich may
lead to LOC is aircraft upset, i.e.
w hen an aircraft exceeds safe
parameters of operation. For
instance, aircraft upset takes
place w hen the pitch attitude
becomes greater than +25o and
–10o or the bank angle remains
greater than 45o.
