FroM huMbLE bEgINNINgs...It was in 1886 that an entrepreneurial door-to-door book salesman in New York City realised his customers really weren't all that interested in the books he was selling. No – the women buying the books were far more taken with the free rose-scented perfume samples that came with them. It was this realisation that launched an empire, which would – completely unbeknownst to its founder – one day become the world's #1 direct selling company, the #1 supporter of the breast cancer cause and a leader in women's empowerment worldwide, providing women with the means to support themselves financially. The California Perfume Company, later renamed Avon in tribute to Shakespeare's home town of Stratford-upon-Avon, was well ahead of its time in this field, beating a number of milestones...

To our dear Representatives across Avon Australia and New Zealand,

On behalf of all of us here at Avon HQ, I am proud to present to you this commemorative booklet. While this is a sad moment for

Representatives and Associates alike, it is also a beautiful opportunity for us all to reflect upon the many hands that have built our iconic

company and shaped our legacy. Since starting with an office team of just 4 in 1963, over our 55 years in Australia and 40 years in

New Zealand we have had just under one million representatives servicing our Customer base, plus over 1,000 Associates providing

support to the field across more than 990 core Campaigns full of iconic products and amazing offers. It all adds up to one team, one Avon, one ANZ, and we are humbled by the contribution each

of you has made to our rich and storied history. I hope that this booklet serves as a reminder of the many wonderful initiatives you've been part of, and the ways in which your contribution has helped to

empower and shape the lives of other women, both here and around the world. Avon was, is, and always will be the company for women,

and you have played a pivotal role during your time with Avon.

On a personal note, I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my own heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you, whether you are a new addition to our team or someone with a wealth of Avon

experience, for your tireless hard work and your contribution to our shared legacy. I have greatly enjoyed corresponding, meeting and spending time with many of you over the four years I have been in

Australia, and have made many wonderful memories that I will take with me on my own journey. I am proud of all that we have achieved together, and consider it a great honour to have worked alongside each of you. I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours.

Yours sincerely,

across Australia and New Zealand

Beginning with a display of fragrance samples in her Winchester variety store, Mrs Albee eventually branched out to door-to-door selling, travelling by horse-drawn buggy and occasionally train to share the California Perfume Company's wares, including the iconic Little Dot Perfume Set. Over the twelve years she spent with the company before failing health forced her into retirement, it is estimated that she recruited over 100 and trained close to 5,000 Representatives. She is also credited with pioneering the sales model that Avon continues to use to this day,

leading founder David H. McConnell to dub her "the Mother of the California Perfume Company".Over the years, Mrs Albee has come to epitomise the image of the Avon Representative, and is held aloft to this day as the ideal to which all Representatives should aspire. So iconic is the image of Mrs Albee that her likeness has been immortalised in a vast array of collectible plates, porcelain renderings, and even two limited-edition Barbie dolls! Here are some of the most iconic Mrs Albee figurines – do you recognise any?

David H. McConnell selected Mrs Persis F. E. Albee, a 50-year-old mother of two from New Hampshire,

as his first general Agent.

Through the 1960s, the Mod subculture defined youth fashion trends. English fashion model Twiggy popularised the iconic look of short hair, flat shoes, shift dresses and false lashes, while Jean Shrimpton raised eyebrows and hemlines in 1965 by arriving at the Victoria Derby in a white shift mini dress. Mod fashion for men tended more toward the sophisticated side with Chelsea boots, narrow ties and tailored suits proving popular.

In the '70s, two major movements defined polarising looks that remain iconic of the time: punk and disco. Vivienne Westwood was one of punk's defining fashion designers, utilising safety pins, bicycle chains, spikes, tartan and leather in her popular designs. On the other hand, New York's disco subculture burst forth from club scene to mainstream in a haze of bell bottoms, lamé, glitter and platform shoes.

The'80s were a great decade for Australian television – 1985 saw the premiere of Neighbours, while

1988 marked the birth of Home and Away's iconic Summer Bay. A Country

Practice, Sons and daughters and Prisoner were also hallmarks of

Australian television through the '80s.

Heavily influenced by the ever-changing aesthetic of David Bowie, and seen by some as both a direct reaction to and rebellion against the punk movement, the New Romantic youth subculture defined a look that remains iconic of the

1980s. Eclectic fashion, quiffed and mulleted hair and heavy use of colourful cosmetics remain hallmarks of this androgynous look. To this day, Boy George of Culture Club remains perhaps the most recognisable New Romantic.

Bursting onto the scene in 1995, the Spice Girls modelled five diverse yet equally popular fashion looks that typified the '90s – Scary brought animal print to the fore, Posh modelled classic minimalism, Baby exuded youthful femininity, Ginger favoured the iconic Union Jack design loved by Britpop fans and Sporty embraced the athleisure trend with cropped midriffs and baggy pants. On the beauty front, "The Rachel" was the haircut du jour, while brown lipstick with heavy lip liner and pencil-thin brows will forever be recognised as the iconic makeup look of the decade.

Did you know?Avon's research and development has always been second to none. In 2005, Avon opened its 225,000 square foot, state-of-the-art research and development facility in Suffern, New York, where hundreds of scientists work to develop and perfect the formulas for the highest quality beauty and skin care products.

2007At the start of the new millennium and following the hysteria of Y2K, the 2000s became a decade of style throwbacks. Ray Ban Wayfarers and aviators were once again the accessory to be seen with, while '60s peacoats and '80s distressed denim popped up amidst the sea of black hoodies, piercings and skinny jeans popularised by the Emo subculture. Hair through the decade was characterised by chunky highlights, with variations of the classic bob including the "lob" and the "pob" proving popular, while mineral makeup and the 1940s-inspired cat's eye plus red lip combination defined the decade's beauty look. There was even a little bit of Australiana infiltrating global trends through the iconic Ugg Boot – knee-high and even high-heeled versions were considered stylish for a short while, and were often seen worn with denim mini skirts!

2003In a period where reality television reigned supreme and legal digital

downloads began to outstrip physical sales, Australian Idol winner GuY

SeBAStIAN'S debut single, ANGeLS BRouGHt Me HeRe topped the

decade's charts. Sebastian would later go on to become Australia's first ever representative at the eurovision Song

Contest in 2015.

n Kerry Anne Kennerley introduces ANeW Platinum to Australian and New Zealand Representatives.

As the age of on-demand content, the 2010s have seen a huge shift toward online influencers. The Kardashian, Jenner and Hadid families have almost single-handedly defined the look of the decade, with their boldly defined brows, glamorous false lashes, sculptural base and overdrawn lips filtering down to the masses of young men and women clamouring to emulate their style as soon as an image enters circulation. The many Instagram and Youtube accounts dedicated to hair and makeup how-tos help make complicated beauty looks easier than ever before to achieve, with a wealth of step-by-step tutorials available at your fingertips, and a culture of collaboration reigning – rather than hiding their beauty secrets, the icons of today seem only too happy to share.

In 2010, Avon launched the Hello Green Tomorrow campaign, supporting reforestation initiatives in South America's Atlantic Rainforest in partnership with The Nature Conservancy. In its first year, over 2 million trees were replanted, restoring a support system for an extraordinary range of plants and animals, helping to clear pollutants from the air and working toward a healthier tomorrow for generations to come. In 2011, efforts spread to reforestation closer to home in Indonesia in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund, and in 2014, the initiative was renamed Healthy Forests, Beautiful World. By the end of 2015, over 4.5 million trees had been planted across Brazil, with an additional 148,000 across Indonesia, and a total of over $7.5 million raised worldwide.
