Resort InformationThe prettiest of the 1960s purpose built resorts; Avoriaz has a striking position on the edge of a cliff. With modernist architecture that blends the traditional chalet style with the principles of brutalism that were popular when the resort was built, Avoriaz has a unique charm unlike anything else. As the highest of the Portes du Soleil ski resorts, the centre is car free, and designed to be easily accessible.

This resort is fantastic for families, and well connected to the rest of the Portes du Soleil with Morzine on one side and Chatel on the other. With the bulk of the resort made up of chalets and apartments, Avoriaz has a village feel. There is a range of activities for all the family, and the bars, restaurants and shops are low key, but usually have a fantastic atmosphere.

The snowy paths and pistes give the resort a real Alpine feel, while the architecture has plenty of character, but doesn’t suit everybody. The cliff behind the resort is floodlit in the evenings, and the silhouette makes a spectacular picture. The ski-in ski-out nature of the village means it is superbly convenient, with the slopes right outside the front door of most residences.

Getting thereThe closest resorts to Geneva are Morzine and Les Gets which are just one hour by car. Avoriaz and Châtel are one hour and 30 minutes from Geneva. There are plenty of flights from within Europe by airlines such as www.easyjet.com and plenty of long-haul flights too.

Expert’s OpinionOur ski expert Fenella Hunter says:

“Avoriaz is one of the most incredible looking resorts in the Alps. It’s not for everyone, but if you like interesting architecture, it’s well worth considering. Avoriaz is arguably the centre of the Portes du Soleil, with the easiest access to each of the main ski areas. Daring skiers should check out the infamous Swiss Wall while they’re there.”

Winter While the resort sits on a sunny plateau, most of the slopes are shaded and designed to keep the snow fresher. Avoriaz is best known as a resort that is fantastic for teenagers, freestyle skiers and snowboarders. There are a number of terrain parks in the area, including a full sized, professional park that is used for contests annually.

As the home to the Swiss Wall, one of the most daunting ski pistes in the world, this resort is great for expert skiers and boarders. The area itself is primarily intermediate, with a limited number of more advanced slopes, including the infamous Swiss Wall. The slopes are wide, with a range of gentle and more extreme pitches that will suit everyone from beginners to experts.

The whole Portes du Soleil area has access to 650km of terrain, with good skiing in the Morzine/Les Gets area. Ski schools in the area are fantastic, with most instructors able to teach in English. The ski schools run lessons on how to ski back country and remote locations for more adventurous types.

SummerAs with other Alpine resorts, the primary sports in Avoriaz during summer are climbing, hiking and mountain biking. There is a huge amount of terrain for bikers to tackle, with Morzine below proving an enduringly popular mountain biking destination, and a system of lifts available to make the sport as easy as possible.

For those looking outside of those hobbies though, summer in the Alps is usually a good place for water sports, from white water rafting to kayaking. Avoriaz is home to a beach volleyball court, which might seem somewhat unusual, but offers a great family activity without the price tag.

More adventurous types can also try canyoning, caving and paragliding to get the rush that skiing provides in the winter. Paintballing is available for those that want to try it, and a summer luge in Morzine always proves popular amongst the kids. Aquariaz, a waterpark in the centre of the resort, is a great place for the whole family to cut loose.
