News & Notes In The Spotlight
Resident Lloyd Carter has
had two very interesting and
very different careers after
growing up in Constantine,
Michigan. His first was
agriculture where he
received a degree in the
subject from Michigan State
College. He went on to own
a farm of over 300 acres
where he raised beef cattle
and milk cows as well as
several kinds of corn, fresh
tomatoes, even some
raspberries and sour cherries. Through a program with the
Farm Bureau in 1955, Lloyd accepted a student from Chile
who worked with him for a year...and introduced him to
flying! Soon Lloyd bought a two-seater airplane; in 1965
he bought a larger one and got his instrument license and
became a multi-engine pilot. This led to a job flying for a
family company in Elkhart, IN for 18 months. Then as a
pilot for Morgan Drive-Away, a mobile-home/ RV
transport co. All of this meant moving with his wife,
Lillian, whom he married in 1950 and their children
(2 boys & 2 girls); the couple were divorced in 1983.
Career-wise Lloyd kept moving too and went to work for a
manufacturer of plastic products in Kalamazoo, eventually
starting his own plastic production co. Carter Assoc. Lloyd
married his second wife, Patricia, in 1985. The couple lived
in Sturgis, MI and one of Lloyd’s sons became involved
with his father’s company. The larger Michigan properties
were sold off and Lloyd and Patricia moved in 1992 to
Bent Tree CC in Sarasota where they met Frank & Lou
Clark (Lakehouse West neighbors now). Lloyd served on
Bent Tree’s Board of Directors and since his wife was a
championship golfer, he began to play too. When she died
in 2016, Lloyd decided to move to Lakehouse West where
he is settling in, getting organized and watching sports on
TV, but with his background he’ll probably become
involved here soon. Welcome to the neighborhood Lloyd!

A note from the President of Lakehouse West.
Kudos to Annette Hodges, Executive Director, the Staff and
all the volunteers at Lakehouse West. You all were amazing
in how you performed during and after the “Irma” hurricane
event. You took wonderful care of us, making us feel secure,
comfortable, well fed and even pampered. Lakehouse West is
an outstanding community in which to live and grow older.
A place where everyone becomes a friend and family! I say
this not only for my wife Inge and myself, but as President
of the Lakehouse West Residents Association. Thank you
again, Dr. Barry August
We Will Play Bocce Again!
In case any of you did not see it, below is a photo of what
Irma did to the Bocce Court! Thanks to our excellent mainte-
nance staff, that mess has been cleaned up and we will play
our first game of Bocce on Wednesday, October 4.
We have a large group who sighed up for Bocce this year.
The captains met and graded the players from one to three—
one being the better players. Then each captain got a player
rated number one, a player rated number two and one rated
number three. All the new people who were not here last year
will be substitutes. Do not be discouraged—the substitutes
are used on a regular basis!
I am looking forward to our first game and encourage
residents to come out and watch. There is seating available.
See you on the court. Jackie Garn, Bocce Director

A “happening” at Lakehouse West
We felt the urgency for protection against the predicted major
hurricane the day before it was due, when Rich Meola, Director of
Maintenance, and his crew covered windows and doors to protect us
from the impending gusts of wind and pounding rain. Annette
Hodges, Executive Director, did a masterful job of organizing her
staff and planning the scheduled events and logistics that were in
place and would keep us all safe, comfortable and distracted,
throughout the duration of the storm.
By early afternoon of the next day, we became a haven for many
family members and their pets. They arrived, not knowing how long they would need to stay and grateful to have our
luggage carts to carry their belongings. Folding beds were set up where needed and dogs & cats were placed in
protected crates in an improvised apartment that served as a pet hotel!
By noon, most of us gathered in the Great Hall to claim a place where we would spend the night; reserving it with a
pillow and blanket. Those who came early enough enjoyed the more comfortable leather chairs and couches. Some
preferred to set up in the Dining Room or in the hall upstairs, others decided they would take a risk and sleep in their
own bed. We were all a bit apprehensive as to what to expect from the storm but remained in complacent mode as we
followed instructions and waited for the storm to arrive. Having an open bar tended by Steven Martin– Bennet CFO, at
our disposal throughout the night, helped to enlighten our spirits and take our minds off of what could have been a
disastrous situation.
Thanks to the generous help of the kitchen, the management staff, and a few guest volunteers, we were all served
dinner, in spite of the difficulties that it may have entailed. Leave it to John Dionne, Social Director,
(who was celebrating his 50th birthday) to plan an activity! He organized bingo to the delight of many residents and
donated bottles of wine to the winners! Some residents played poker, others played bridge, improvising games in
whatever space was available.
As the evening progressed, it was heartwarming to see the interaction between the residents and the staff as we
became a family, bonding together to face the uncertainty of what was to come. Neighbors were helping neighbors;
some sharing their apartments, others assisting those who were in need. Staff were available on every floor.
It turned a stressful experience into a joint effort of camaraderie.
As darkness prevailed we became dependent on generator and battery operated candles. Many remained quiet and
pensive. One couple sat by themselves, just holding hands. At times when the elevator caused a problem,
Susan Solomon, Marketing Director came to the rescue and somehow got it working again! The evening passed without
serious incident. Although some residents left early to go to their apartments, many stayed downstairs until 1:30 am!
Those who did stay downstairs enjoyed a late night treat of ice cream and cookies.
By early morning we knew the storm had passed and we were left with no power and damage from falling trees.
There was coffee; fruit and biscuits for breakfast; another example of Lakehouse West’s warm hospitality!
It’s ironic but not unusual, that an uninvited guest like Hurricane Irma can bring out the best in us. We proved how
well we can work together as a team, no matter what Mother Nature throws at us!
In the days to come, we should all feel reassured that as residents, we are in good hands, treated with loving care and
living in a place we are truly fortunate to call home!
