NIKON IRIS AWARDS CALL FOR ENTRIES 2020 4

We’ve made some exciting changes this year, including a new no-holds-barred category, more entries allowed in each category, a more user-friendly entry process and new awards for highest-scoring entries. Here’s an overview of what’s new for the 2020 Iris Awards.

W h at ’ s n e w t h i s y e a r ?

» NEW AWARD - CATEGORY HIGHEST-SCORING ENTRY AWARD A new award to celebrate the entry that receives the highest score within each individual category. The winner is awarded the title, a certificate and digital decal to promote their win.

» CALL FOR ENTRIES There are two components to the entry criteria and rules this year, ‘global rules’ that apply across all categories and entries; and ‘category specific’ rules. Some categories allow the use of more post-production techniques than others. The category specific rules are each divided into two sections, and sub-sections, depending on what camera and post-production techniques are permitted.

» BOOK / EXPRESSIVE CATEGORY A minimum number of entries is required to make a category viable. Unfortunately with low book entries in recent years we are no longer able to offer the Book category. However, books can be entered into the new Expressive Category. The awards are all about encouraging creativity and innovation. We’re excited to announce the new Expressive Category where there are minimal limits to showcasing your creativity. This category allows the use of mixed media content and techniques in a way that brings new meaning and vision to the photographic medium.

» CATEGORY ENTRY CRITERIA These have been updated to provide clarity and consistency when entering.

» SUBJECT RULE Check out Page 15 for details on changes to the ‘Subject’ rule, with the emphasis on an entrant presenting uniquely different images within a submission.

CHANGES WITH GOING ONLINE FOR 2020:

» ENTRY NUMBERS Going online for the 2020 Nikon IRIS AWARDS means - no print costs, no delivery costs, and no handling fee! This also means we are able to reduce entry costs significantly and accept more entries per person. For the 2020 Iris Awards Only: There is no limit to the total number of entries, or the number of entries per category, an entrant can submit (including the Student Category).

» NZIPP DISTINCTIONS With open entry numbers, NZIPP and reciprocal organisation members will earn merit points on their top ten highest scoring entries only. Refer to Page 35 for further details.

» ENTRY VETTING Entry vetting will take place through random entry checks where entrants may be requested to supply the original capture files for an entry or entries. Refer to Page 17 for full details.

» IMAGE CAPTURE TIMEFRAME Due to current photography limitations, the 24 month timeframe requirement on image capture has been removed. For 2020 only, there is NO restriction on the timeframe in which an image, or images in the case of composites, has been photographed.

» MAJOR & CATEGORY PRIZES All major and category award winners receive a crystal trophy and a certificate. We look forward to announcing specific prizes in the next few months.

Selection of the winners is carried out in a closed forum, by a panel of five judges who will be looking for:

• Consistent mastery of technical and aesthetic control;

• Innovation and creativity;

• Originality;

• Diversity;

• Strength of communication, emotion and/or concept.

M A J O R AWA R D S

NEW ZEALAND PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (NZPOY)The title of New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year (NZPOY) is a prestigious and coveted award, and winning it is an achievement of a lifetime.

To determine the NZPOY finalists, we take the six highest-scoring entries from the three NZ entrants with the highest overall aggregate scores across all categories, except the Student Category. The NZPOY winner is determined by a majority decision, and is awarded to the folio that the judges deem to best represent the above criteria. Once a decision has been reached it is final.

To be eligible for the NZ Professional Photographer of the Year award the entrant:

» Must be a New Zealand professional photographer;

» Must be a permanent resident of New Zealand;

» Must have entered a minimum of six print entries;

» International photographers and students are NOT eligible for this award.

INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (IPPOY)To determine the International Photographer of the Year finalists, we take the four highest-scoring entries from the top three highest aggregate international entrants, across all categories, except the Student Category.

The IPPOY winner is determined by a majority decision, and is awarded to the folio that the judges deem to best represent the criteria stated in 'What the judges are looking for' on page 7. Once a decision has been reached it is final.

To be eligible for the International Professional Photographer Of The Year award the entrant:

» Must be a professional photographer;

» Must reside permanently outside of New Zealand;

» Must have entered a minimum of four entries.

HIGHEST-SCORING ENTRY AWARDAwarded to the entrant who receives the highest score across all categories, except the Student Category.

To be eligible for the Highest-Scoring Entry Award the entrant:

» Must be a New Zealand or International professional photographer.

CATEGORY HIGHEST SCORING ENTRY AWARDAwarded to the entry that receives the highest score within each category. This award is open to all entrants (national and international) within each category.

In the event two or more entrants receive the same final score, the entry with the highest initial score will be determined the winner. If there is still a tie after this, the award will be shared.

CATEGORY OVERALL WINNER AWARDSCategory finalists are determined based on:

» In-Camera and Open categories - the top three highest-scoring entries from the top three (or more where entrants are tied) highest aggregate entrants within the category.

» Student Category - the top two highest-scoring entries from the top three highest aggregate entrants within the category.

A category winner is determined by a majority decision and is awarded to the folio that the judges deem to best represent the criteria stated in 'What the judges are looking for' on page 7. Once a decision has been reached it is final.

Judges, through consensus, have the right NOT to award a category winner where the finalist folios are deemed not to reflect the standard that would be expected to represent a 'category' Photographer of the Year award.

To be eligible for a category award the entrant: » Must be a professional photographer, except in the Student Category;' » Must reside permanently in New Zealand.

JAMES WHITE MEMORIAL AWARDThe James White Award was originally an overseas study grant, established by the 1975 management committee, as a memorial to James and the work he did for the NZIPP. Not only was James a past NZIPP President, but he was also instrumental in setting up the awards programme. Although this is no longer a study grant, it remains a memorial award presented to a first time NZIPP entrant who achieves the highest aggregate score from their top four entries across any of the open categories. The winner will receive:

» The James White Memorial Award trophy

To be eligible for the James White Memorial Award the entrant:

» Must be a professional photographer;

» Must be a full financial member of the NZIPP (Affiliate or Accredited Member) at the opening of online registrations;

» Must be a first-time entrant in the main categories of the awards (excluding the Student Category);

» Must have entered a minimum of four entries, with the winner determined based on their top four entries.

CURTIS / POOLE AWARDThe Curtis / Poole Award started in 2009, in memory of two long-standing and colourful characters of the NZIPP, Brian Curtis and Richard Poole. Both were Honorary Fellows of the organisation and contributed much to both the Institute and New Zealand photography in general.

Each year the Curtis / Poole Award is presented to the NZIPP region that scores the highest aggregate from their four top-performing members' highest-scoring entries, across any of the main categories. Fully financial NZIPP Accredited and Affiliate Members are eligible to represent their region for this award, excluding Student Category entrants.

The representatives of the winning NZIPP region will each receive a certificate.

JANAY JOHNSTONE MEMORIAL AWARDNZIPP member Janay Johnstone began her working life as a graphic designer, then launched her newborn photography career in 2015 after the birth of her own son.

A talented photographer, Janay was a vivacious person with a heart of gold. She became part of the Heartfelt volunteer network, visiting hospitals to photograph babies who were seriously ill or had died during birth. Janay and her own unborn baby girl sadly passed away together on March 6, 2019.

This award has been established by the NZIPP in conjunction with Janay’s husband Mark, and her family, to honour Janay.

Finalists are determined based on the top three highest-scoring newborn entries in any of the main categories, excluding the Student Category. The entry that judges deem to best represent the criteria in 'What the judges are looking for' on page 7 is the award winner. Once a decision has been reached it is final.

The winner will receive a certificate and be presented with the Janay Johnstone Memorial Award trophy.

For the purpose of this award, a 'Newborn’ is defined as an infant up to three months of age; as calculated from the date of delivery if full term (37–42 weeks), or from the due date if premature.

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHIC CUPThe World Photographic Cup (WPC) was founded in 2013 as a cooperative effort by The Federation of European Photographers (FEP) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Its singular goal is to unite photographers in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. Professional photographic bodies from around the world are each year invited to select and enter images, in a range of genres, to represent their organisation and country.

World Photographic Cup Entry Selection

The NZIPP Team entries are selected from the top-scoring images from the current year's Iris Awards, and based on the WPC category and overall entry criteria. Where an entry does not meet this criteria, a prospective entrant chooses not to participate, or an entrant does not respond to an invitation within the specified time frame, the next eligible entry is considered.

Three images per WPC category are entered. Only one entry per person per category is allowed, but an entrant may have an entry in multiple WPC categories.

WPC entry selection, made by members of the NZIPP Honours Council and/or their nominated person(s), is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

To be eligible to represent the NZIPP and NZ in the WPC, an entrant: » Must be a fully financial Accredited Professional Member of the NZIPP, at both the time of entry into the

Iris Awards and the time of final WPC selection. » Must be a New Zealand citizen and reside permanently in New Zealand. » International photographers and students are NOT eligible for entry selection.

REGIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (RPOY)The Regional Photographer of the Year (RPOY) award is presented to the highest-scoring photographer within each region at the annual Iris Professional Photography Awards. This is determined from the aggregate of an entrant’s top four highest-scoring entries.

In the event two entrants have the same score, a series of countback processes will take place until an outright winner is determined. In order of consideration, this process is based on:

» The highest final score from the tied entrants’ highest-scoring entry; » The highest final score of the tied entrants’ second highest-scoring entry; » The highest initial score of the tied entrants' highest-scoring entry; » The highest initial score of the tied entrants' second-highest scoring entry;

If after each of these four steps the entrants are still tied, the award will be shared. At an appropriate regional event, determined by the Regional Representative, the winner will be presented with an engraved trophy and a certificate. To be eligible for the Regional Photographer of the Year award the entrant:

» Must be a fully financial Accredited Professional Member of the NZIPP, at both the time of entry into the Iris Awards and the time of award receipt;

» Must be a permanent resident of New Zealand; » Must have entered a minimum of four entries; » The naming of each NZIPP RPOY requires that a minimum of five eligible entrants from that region have entered.

NZIPP Regions » Auckland » Canterbury / Westland » Central Districts » Waikato / Bay of Plenty » Wellington » Nelson » Otago / Southland

The Iris Awards have two separate category types to ensure entries are judged equally against other entries that have used the same techniques and post-production processes: these category types each have two sub-types as seen in the table below.

» In-Camera categories (limited editing allowed) » Open categories (unlimited editing allowed)

Use the table below, alongside the 'Category Types - Entry Criteria' tables, on the next two pages, to determine where to enter your work. Non-composite means separate images / elements cannot be combined in post-production: they would have to have been exposed in sequence in-camera. If you have combined elements from two or more images, through non-sequential in-camera techniques or in post-production, your entry must go in a composite or mixed-media category.

C A P T U R E & C O N T E N TExcept where stated in category-specific rules:

» All elements and content within an entry must be 100% photographic in origin;

» All elements and content within an entry must be the original work of the entrant;

» The use of stock photography and/or computer generated elements is not permitted;

» Downloaded photographic art, imagery and other photographic elements for use in an entry are not permitted.

» Entries entered into a previous Iris Awards judging are ineligible.

» Entries created from an image or elements used in an image previously entered into the Iris Awards are not permitted.

» FOR 2020 ONLY - There is NO restriction on the timeframe in which an image, or images in the case of composites, has been photographed.

» No entry must have previously been entered into the Iris Awards.

» An entry may be of the same subject as that photographed in a previous entry, and may be from the same shoot or session, or contain elements used in a previous entry.

» However, the entry must be significantly different from the previous entry.

» The creation of photographic content includes techniques such as digital (RAW and JPEG), analogue negatives or positives, analogue plates, polaroids and contact printing. All analogue processes will require the work to be digitally reproduced.

» Images captured, retouched and digitally edited over the duration of a workshop, tutorial, educational training event or similar organised or guided event, such as a photo walk, photo tour, or styled shoot, are ineligible for entry. This is irrespective of whether or not the image was captured or created under the direct instruction of the educator, presenter or guide. The rule applies to attendees only and not to the instructors, guides or tour leaders.

S U B J E C TSame subject - The intent of the Iris Awards is to judge and reward visually different and impactful images alongside excellence in craft. While the same subject may be used across multiple entries "in a single year", all of your entries must be unique and distinct from each other both visually and conceptually.

Entries that are deemed to not conform will be disqualified. If the same subject is used, it must be an entirely different capture and involve entirely different treatment. The subject must not be recognisable as being in the same location, moment in time, or depicted similarly. For example, use a different setting, styling, wardrobe, posing, and lighting, etc.

Originality - Judges are looking for originality. The copying of another photograph, painting or image etc (either knowingly or subconciously) where all or a significant number of key elements are similar or the same, is not permitted, nor in the spirit of the awards.

The Honours Council reserves the right to randomly check entries for compliance with entry conditions.

Verification that an entry meets all rules, through either the vetting process or an investigation, may be done at any time and is not limited to the year of entry. This is to ensure the authenticity and eligibility of what is being submitted for judging and provide entrants with an even and fair playing field.

The NZIPP Honours Council agrees to take all reasonable steps to ensure entries presented to the judges meet all entry conditions and criteria. Neither the Honours Council, nor NZIPP, will be held responsible or liable should it later be found an entrant has breached entry rules.

To support the pre-awards entry vetting process, and/or an investigation:

» On request, an entrant is required to submit all the original capture files for each element used to create an entry (or entries), along with the entry's final flattened JPG version (the same file used for the online registration).

» The Honours Council reserves the right to also request working/layered files where an issue arises that cannot be resolved through examining the original capture and final image files.

» Where an entrant fails to supply all the requested files, or supplies files that are incomplete or unreadable, their entry (or entries) may be disqualified.

» If an entry is suspected of rule breaches, an entrants' entire submission will undergo vetting by default.

» If there is a suspected rules breach the entrant will be notified. Any communication on the matter will be kept confidential. However, where it is deemed necessary the Honours Council reserves the right to share information on a matter with the NZIPP Board and/or other interested parties.

» Any entry deemed by the NZIPP Honours Council as breaching rules will be disqualified. It does not matter whether you think your entry complies with any or all of the rules: it is the Honours Council that needs to be satisfied entries comply with the rules and the spirit and intent of the awards. If in doubt whether an entry complies with any specific category rules, ask by emailing [email protected], or enter it into an alternative category.

VETTING - DIGITAL FILE SUBMISSIONShould you be asked to submit files as part of the vetting process, the Honours Council will supply an upload link as part of any request. The submitted files must include:

» All 'original capture' (RAW, DNG, or unedited JPEG) files for each and every element used within each entry submitted;

» Where working/layered files are requested, these must include all layers used to create the entry;

» The 'final image' file for each entry. This is the same flattened JPEG file you will upload as part of your online entry registration.

File management:

» Create a single main folder with your initials and entrant/member ID number. E.g, Brown.Jenny_1234;

» Inside the main folder, create a separate folder for each image entered. Name each folder with a short image title (for quick identification of each entry);

» Copy the 'original capture' files, for each and every element used in the entry (including textures, borders, etc.), into the respective image folder;

» Copy all 'final image' files (the same file uploaded during online registration) for each entry into the respective image folder;

» Files must be presented in a logical and organised manner. BEST PRACTICE WORKFLOWBest practice work flow is encouraged at all times when preparing entries, including:

» Retaining a copy of all original capture files (camera native RAW or DNG, or unedited JPEG)

» When carrying out post-production in Photoshop, it is in your best interest to retain your working files with all layers, layer masks, adjustment layers intact. Save these as either a layered PSD or TIFF. Where your process involves flattening layers, save additional file versions, allowing you to retain the earlier version with layers intact.

F I N A L I S T S & W I N N E R SFinalist judging takes place in a closed forum, by a panel of five judges. Judges have the opportunity to discuss each finalist folio presented, before ranking them and identifying their top entry.

» In-Camera and Open categories - the top three-highest scoring prints from the top three (or more where entrants are tied) highest aggregate entrants within the category;

» Student Category - the top two highest-scoring prints from the top three highest aggregate entrants within the category;

» NZPOY - the six highest-scoring prints from the three NZ entrants with the highest overall aggregate scores across all categories, except the Student Category;

» IPOY - the four highest-scoring prints from the top three highest aggregate international entrants, across all categories,

All winners are determined by a majority decision. Once a decision has been reached it is final.

I r i s Awa r d s J u d g i n g

I R I S AWA R D S J U D G I N GAll entries are judged anonymously.

Judging is carried out by panels of five respected national and international judges. A panel chair facilitates the judging, which in turn is overseen by the NZIPP Honours Council.

Judges are selected based on their experience, historical and contemporary photographic and arts knowledge, their genres of expertise, and ability to articulate their thoughts.

Judges independently assess an entry, scoring it out of 100, to reach an average initial score. A debate occurs when one or more judges have scored outside of the initial average score, and they make a challenge to this initial score. During the debate judges present their opinions on the entry. Following debate, the entry is re-scored, from which the final score is attained.

Entries receiving a score on the cusp of another award range (79 or 89) are immediately reviewed. Judges are then asked to decide if the entry remains at that score, or moves to the next award range (80 or 90).

Please Note:

Going online for the Iris Awards 2020, and reduced entry fees, means likely entry numbers are unknown. If entry numbers exceed what the Honours Council deem is feasible to be judged in a live-streamed session, a closed preliminary judging round will take place. Entries won't receive a comment or feedback during this round and the preliminary judging won't be streamed online.

Only entries that go through to the online live judging will receive a comment! During the livestreamed judging, if there is no debate, a judge is invited to offer some educational feedback on the work.

The 'Call for Entries' section outlines the requirements and entrant obligations in supporting the Iris Awards vetting processes. This process begins at the time online entry registration opens.

» It is the Honours Council that needs to be satisfied an entry complies with the intent of the rules and spirit of the awards. Where it is determined that an entry and/or entrant has breached rules and/or terms and conditions, the entry and/or entrant will be disqualified.

» Due to time constraints, comprehensive image reviews are not always feasible as part of the vetting process leading up to the judging. The Honours Council reserves the right to perform further entry reviews, and/or start a formal investigation, retrospectively. This is not limited to the year of entry.

» Where a further review or an investigation is carried out at a later time, entries that were previously “accepted” remain open to review.

» As part of any vetting or investigation, the Honours Council reserves the right to request all original capture files and/or working/layered files, for each an every element used to create an entry.

» Where an entrant fails to supply all the requested files, or supplies files that are incomplete or unreadable, their entry (or entries) may result in automatic disqualification.

» Where a formal investigation is initiated, this will follow the NZIPP Honours Council Complaints & Investigation Process.

» In the case of any disqualification, the Honours Council’s decision is final.

In the event of an entry and/or entrant disqualification any, or all, of the following penalties may apply:

» The entrant is ineligible for any refund associated with a disqualification;

» Up to five merit points per disqualified entry may be deducted from any accrued Distinction merit points total. This applies to NZIPP members and members of reciprocal rights organisations;

» The entrant will be required to immediately remove all website and social media content, together with any print or other materials (including in any printed portfolios, studios or any other locations) which make reference to NZIPP or the Iris Awards in relation to those entries.

» Dependent on the severity of the case, an entrant’s entire Iris Award submissions may be disqualified. This is not limited to the year of initial entry disqualification;

» NZIPP membership may be revoked;

» A life-time ban from entering the awards, or an entry stand-down period, may be imposed.

» The entrant may be subject to compulsory image scrutinising when entering future awards.

» Disqualified entries will be removed from all forms of NZIPP media and online forums, and where deemed necessary any award sponsor(s) will be notified.
