Jesus College, Cambridge

Founded in 1496, Jesus is one of Cambridge's oldest and most beautifulcolleges. It is set in spacious grounds in a central location, just a fewminutes' walk from the river, a number of faculties and departments, andthe city's many and varied shops. All students are accommodated on-sitefor the duration of their studies and the College is proud of its reputationas a friendly yet high-achieving community.

Jesus College admits around 140 undergraduates a year and seeks toselect those applicants with the greatest academic promise andcommitment. Applicants from all types of school are warmly welcomed, and all are considered for admission as individuals on their own merits. We know that Cambridge in general and Jesus College in particular havemuch to offer able and motivated students from whatever background, and that they have much to offer us. The College welcomes applicants forall subjects studied in the University, and there is a roughly equal numberof arts and science students. The number of students in individual subjectsvaries slightly from year to year to take account of the relative strength ofthe applications in each subject. One important criterion for admission is,of course, achievement in public examinations, but we also take greatcare to assess each candidate by sensitive and sympathetic personalinterview as well as taking account of his or her individual circumstances.

Those intending to apply for a Choral Award are interviewed alongside allapplicants for undergraduate places at the College and University in earlyDecember. Places in the Choir may also be available to graduate studentsand those interested should contact the Director of Music for furtherinformation. Applicants for Organ Awards are interviewed academically atthe time of the auditions in September and are expected to meet fully theadmissions criteria set for their subject. Whilst the College valuesexcellence and talent in music and many other spheres, these are not apassport to an academic place and applicants for Organ and ChoralAwards are expected to compete on a level playing field with othersapplying to read their chosen subject. At Jesus College a Choral Award iscompatible with all subjects and members of the Choir read for a widerange of degrees in the arts and sciences.

The Chapel & Choirs

The College Chapel was originally theancient church of the Benedictine Nunneryof St Radegund, begun around 1140 andfinished in the first half of the thirteenthcentury. The Nunnery was dissolved whenthe Bishop of Ely, John Alcock, founded thecollege in its stead in 1496. The majestic andancient Chapel is the beating heart of theCollege where morning and evening servicesare said or sung daily during term time.

From its earliest days, the College maintaineda choir of men and boys, which particularlyflourished in the twentieth century under thedirection of distinguished former organscholars such as Peter Hurford and JamesO'Donnell. Following the admission offemale undergraduates, it was felt thatwomen should have the opportunity to singin the Chapel, but that the tradition of boys'singing should not be abandoned. As aresult, since 1982 the College has enjoyedservices sung by two choirs - the CollegeChoir in which female undergraduates singsoprano and alto, and the Chapel Choir inwhich boys from a variety of local schoolssing the treble line. Student countertenors, tenors and basses form the 'back row' in bothchoirs. Each choir has developed adistinctive reputation and repertoire, whilstcombining for key events and large-scaleprojects. Organ scholars at Jesus Collegehave the rare opportunity to experience thetraining of treble voices first-hand whilst alsoworking with a choir of mixed voices, andchoral scholars enjoy the special experienceof belonging to a unique choir family.

Choral ScholarshipsAll Choral Scholarship applicants areexpected to have an attractive, clear (thoughnot necessarily fully-trained) voice, and todemonstrate good aural and sight-readingskills. Potential is just as important as provenability – we expect to train singers duringtheir time here, and great weight is given tothe educational aspects of the scholarship. In

addition to the award of a University Choral Scholarship, benefits include fourFeasts a year, an annual Choir Dinner, subsidised meals in Hall for each servicesung, several parties, fully-subsidised foreign tours and a generous singing lessonallowance. In addition, a number of workshops and master-classes are arrangedeach year for the students, free of charge.

Whilst both choirs exist primarily to enhance the Anglican worship of the CollegeChapel, it is not required that those who sing be members of the Church ofEngland or indeed any Christian Church, but only that they be prepared torespect the traditions and purpose of the Chapel. The cultural, musical, linguisticand spiritual benefits of a Choral Scholarship are great, and are open for allsuitable candidates to enjoy.

Choral Applications

Choral Scholarships at all Cambridge colleges are awarded after candidates have receivedan academic offer to study at the University.

Those considering making an application to JesusCollege who may be interested in a Choral Award arewelcome to sing to the Director of Music informally orto attend a Vocal Assessment Day in September. Thisis by no means essential but may prove useful tocandidates who wish to know more about the natureof the commitment and the level of vocal and musicalaptitude required. Richard Pinel is happy to meet

potential applicants (who are also welcome to attend rehearsals and/or services) at anytime. The UCAS deadline normally falls on or around 15 October. Please contact theChoir Administrator on [email protected] or 01223 339699 to arrange a visit.

For details of the process and timetable for applying for a choral award please visit:http://www.study.cam.ac.uk/undergraduate/apply/musicawards/choral.html

Academic interviews and offersAcademic interviews usually take place in December. Most applicants are invited forinterview. Only those whose applications seem highly unlikely to be successful on academicgrounds, when assessed against all other applications for any given subject, will not havetheir application taken any further. Following the interview, those who do not receive anacademic offer from Cambridge are not eligible for a Choral Award. Those who are pooledto another college may apply for a Choral Award at their newly-allocated college or mayrequest to be considered for a place as a volunteer at the college to which they initiallyapplied (volunteers are members of the Choir who are not members of the College - thereare normally between three and six choral volunteers in Jesus College Choir each year). Those who do receive an academic offer are eligible to apply for a Choral Award andauditions normally take place during the Easter Vacation. Choral Award offer-holders, like allother offer-holders, are expected to meet their academic offers at 'A' level (or its equivalent).

AuditionsApplicants will be expected to sing a piece of their choice lastingapproximately four minutes. Applicants are then given some eartests, including singing back individual notes and notes within achord, singing back melodies and identifying intervals etc. Theirrange will be demonstrated with some simple exercises and therewill be a piece of sight-reading (usually a motet from the sixteenthcentury). The audition is not meant to be intimidating and allapplicants are encouraged to practise these exercises with teachersand/or friends to ensure that they are confident and at ease.

Organ Applications

The organ trials take place in late September – dates may be found at:http://www.study.cam.ac.uk/undergraduate/apply/musicawards/organ.html

During the trials, candidates are accommodated by their College of first choice.

In the formal audition, which takes place in a college chapel chosen by the Coordinatorof the Organ Awards, the candidate begins by playing the prepared piece. Applicantsare required to play one of the trio movements given on the University Organ Awardswebsite. A series of tests follow (the same tests are given to all candidates). Candidateswill be required to:

• sight-read a piece on three staves, involving some simple registration changes (forexample use of the swell pedal, addition/subtraction of Great to Pedal)

• transpose a hymn-like passage on two staves, up or down a tone or semitone, including the use of pedals

• score-read a passage of four-part polyphony in conventional clefs and notation, without pedals

In a second audition held at the candidate’s college of first preference (and also, often, atother colleges featured on the candidate’s preference list), applicants should be preparedto perform a piece of their own choice. The piece must be of at least grade 8 standard, and should be of a contrasting mood/tempo to the trio. Candidates may also be asked toundertake further keyboard tests, including score-reading and playing an anthem and/orpsalm accompaniment. All applicants will be required to conduct a six minute choirpractice. Music will be distributed at the meeting for all applicants at the start of the trials. It will be a short, unaccompanied anthem, and applicants may expect the choir to knowthe notes. The choir will be a friendly and informally-constituted ensemble of currentmembers of the University who sing with various college choirs. A keyboard or piano willbe provided for giving notes.

Candidates at Jesus College may also beasked to take a rehearsal with the boychoristers. In addition, there will be eartests (dictation of a melody, dictation of afour-part chorale – the soprano part willbe given throughout and recognition andcorrection of mistakes of pitch and rhythmin a score heard three times), and, forthose intending to read Music, harmonytests (harmonising a Bach chorale - thesoprano part given throughout - withoutthe aid of a keyboard).

ProfilesVicky Taylor (third-year Geography student, Jesus College)"I have absolutely loved my first two years singing with Jesus. Havingnot previously sung with a chapel choir I was apprehensive at firstabout being unfamiliar with much of the music and traditions, however I was very quickly put at ease. The welcoming and friendlynature of the choir has not only made the time singing enjoyable, butit has truly enhanced my experience at Cambridge so far. I feel I havealso grown in confidence technically due to the provided fortnightlysinging lessons. Not only has it been musically rewarding and

provided many amazing experiences such as travelling to Hong Kong, France and Malta, butI have met many of my closest friends through the choir. The opportunity to produce CDsand perform in incredible concerts, such as Verdi's Otello in King's College Chapel, withsuch a lovely group of people is something I really value amongst busy terms and essaydeadlines. I am very much looking forward to my final year in the choir and wouldencourage anyone thinking of singing at Cambridge to consider Jesus!"

Amar Gandhi (third-year Natural Sciences student, Robinson College)"Singing in Jesus College Choir has been a highlight of my time so far atuniversity, and I’m sure it will continue to be. The opportunity to singsuch a varied range of repertoire to a consistently high standard is veryspecial, and as a Natural Sciences student something refreshing I canalways look forward to after a day in labs and lectures. Not only doesthe choir provide access to a high level of music, but it also has a strongsocial aspect whereby a group of students come together and sing threeor five times a week. This gives a great sense of community to the choir.Being a choral volunteer this has really enabled me to feel at home at Jesus and my own collegeRobinson, and I have made great friends in choir. To go on tour once or twice a year reallymakes it all the more special, and allows us to both raise the profile of Jesus College Choir andperform in amazing venues, such as Beijing, Toulon or Venice. I’d certainly say that I haveenjoyed singing in the choir thus far, and as time goes on I’m sure I will enjoy it more still."

Lizzy Nightingale (second-year Modern Languages student, JesusCollege)"Singing in Jesus College Choir is an incredibly rewarding and enjoyableexperience. I love singing beautiful music in an ancient chapel, andregular Evensong is a perfect break from my studies, allowing me to enjoyand focus on something different for a while. Being part of the choir givesme some amazing opportunities and experiences, from tours abroad tofree singing lessons and singing wonderful pieces such as Elgar’s Dreamof Gerontius. These experiences will stay with me for the rest of my life.

The choir is friendly and welcoming, and I have made some good friends. I feel very happy andprivileged to be part of it and to benefit from such an amazing musical education

Their tone is full and pleasing, pitching is accurate and they’re apleasure to listen to. However, what impressed me more than

anything is the sense of engagement, the commitment with whichthey sing the music. This is never overdone but all the time you

feel as if the music - and the words - matter to them. I foundtheir performances thoroughly convincing.
