*Low demand certificates will not be offered each year. Early Adolescence Through Young Adulthood (EAYA) World Languages Other than English (WLOE) for Ages 11-18+ is still available. Specialty areas German, Latin, Japanese are no longer included. Future availability of these certificates will be dictated by demand. Information on low demand certificates will be provided on the NBPTS website as it becomes available.

Schedule of the Process

Once a candidate has made initial payment to

NBPTS, the candidate can complete the

portfolio and assessment center exercises in

any order, as long as the deadlines for

portfolio submission and the assessment

center are met.

Scoring

Four-point rubric

Scorers are all recognized practicing teachers in the certificate-area.

Scoring takes place in the summer.

Bias, validity and reliability checks are in place (has higher reliability rates than AP exam).

Three Resources for Support

1. NBPTSManages the National Board Assessment System.

2. NBRC at Illinois State UniversityProcesses the applications for the IL Candidate Fee

Subsidy paid by ISBE.

Offers website resources for candidates.

3. Voluntary NBCT-led Candidate SupportNBCTs may volunteer to set up cohorts or individually

mentor candidates.

Changes in Candidate Support

Due to limited funding, it is not known if there will be a statewide candidate support program.

Candidates may—

• Contact NBCTs locally or in their certificate to see if the NBCT would volunteer to mentor.

• Contact administrators or NBCTs in schools or districts to see if there is a candidate support program available.

• Visit the NBRC at ISU website to find working agendas and handouts to support individual candidates to work through parts of the process.

Go to the NBPTS web site: www.nbpts.org Click on “For Candidates”.

Then click on the link that says “Certificate Areas”.

Scroll down and select the subject area (or generalist) and the correct development area (early childhood, middle childhood etc.) that matches your teaching assignment.

Then download and review the “Assessment at a Glance.” Highlight every place where you see your practice. Decide whether or not this process will a good fit for you at this time.)

• Due to limited funding, the Illinois State Board of Education will support 500 candidates.

• Continue to visit the NBRC at ISU website to see information about the spring 2010 window for the Illinois Candidate Fee Subsidy.

Priority for State Funding

In the event there are more applications than available funding, the state will prioritize applications on a first come, first serve basis and for teachers who meet one of these qualifications—

• Completed the NBPTS Take One! process.• Teach in an AEWS School.• Teach in a AWS School.• Teach in a school with 50% or more students on

Illinois State University How to Apply for State Funding

1. Apply to NBPTS and pay the $65. (Do NOT pay the $500 non-refundable fee.)

2. Then go to the NBRC at ISU website to print the application for the Illinois NBPTS Candidate Fee Subsidy.

3. Complete the Illinois application accurately, completely, and legibly.

4. Fax the completed Illinois NBPTS Candidate Fee Subsidy Application to the NBRC at ISU.
