hua hin, ThaiLanDTraditionally we have used the front page of our last issue of the year to look back and forward to the year that has passed and the year before us; part of that process is to look at what we had to say this time last year, and we could almost reprint that front page again this time round. Last year our headline read ‘annus horribilis’ as 2013 had seen extreme weather and a bad high season, with politics taking centre stage as the main culprit damaging Thailand’s tourist trade.We don’t like using headlines more than once but 2014 would be good reason to as it has been another horrible year for many businesses, particularly those involved in or affected by tourism. The weather has been better though, and while most have welcomed the military and the new broom they have been brandishing, the continuing martial law, although it doesn’t really affect day to day life, has dealt another crushing blow to the tourist trade, with some local businesses reporting that numbers are down by over a quarter from last year, and even official figures are stating drops of around 8 per cent in tourist numbers.So what lies ahead in 2015? Given that the planned elections have now been pushed back to 2016 it seems likely that the new year will be a bit of a waiting game for many, trying to get by and hoping that it will be at least a little better than 2014. it may well present some golden opportunities for those with cash to spare in both the property and business markets, and this in itself may trigger better times for others. however all we can say now is that we hope this time next year will see us able to look forward with a lot more optimism than we can this.

Elvis has left the buildingThe show is over - go home.This was announced at the end of Elvis Presley’s concerts to encourage fans to accept that there would be no further encores and to go home. it is now used more widely to indicate that someone has made an exit or that something is complete.Oddly, although the phrase was routinely used to encourage the audience to leave, the first time that it was announced it was to encourage them to stay in their seats. That first use was in December 1956 by horace Logan, who was the announcer at the Louisiana hayride show, in which Elvis was a regular performer. Presley had very quickly become very popular with teenagers but had previously taken a regular lowly spot at the hayride, which was his first big break. he was on the bill quite early in proceedings but after his performance was over and the encore complete, the crowd of teenagers, who weren’t hillbilly enthusiasts, began to leave. Logan announced:“Please, young people ... Elvis has left the building. he has gotten in his car and driven away ... Please take your

With its 50 percent more protein, 30 percent more calcium, half the sugar content of regular milk, and at only twice the price, who wouldn’t rush out to buy it?Talking of drinks - how does Smirnoff get those gold particles to suspend themselves in bottles of vodka? You may also ask why do they bother, although it does look pretty. Personally a pretty drink to me is a coffee bean aflame on a shot of Sambucca, but even that is a rare sight these days, when common sense dictates that splashing out on a good malt makes much better economic sense.Theories include one that the gold flakes are held in suspension for ages due to the viscosity of the drink, a theory which does seem preferable to those involving coating the gold flakes with either paraffin or beeswax. Just imagine having that job on your CV. ‘So Mr Smith, i see that you have been working for Smirnoff in their Gold Leaf beeswaxing Division, what on earth makes you want to leave?’On a much more serious note we can’t let the week go by without remembering the 10th anniversary of the asian boxing Day tsunami. You won’t all have been living in Thailand at the time. Meanwhile legal battles continue over the responsibility of majority share holder in the pesticide company, union Carbide Corporation, and of uCCs american parent company Dow Chemical.although we know there can never be an end to either natural or man made disasters, every new Year we hope for better things to happen. We raise a glass or three to the future, and make our new Year resolutions. and in britain we are being urged to sign up to ‘Dry January’, which promises to save us money and make us feel better - except of course for those who brew, distill, sell, and coat gold flakes with beeswax. Palace are also the closest Premier League team to Dover and there will also be a bit of Kent/Surrey rivalry thrown into the mix. On paper it should be no contest but every year a tie like this comes along that defies the odds.Financially it will be better for Dover to get a draw here and then cash in on a lucrative game at Selhurst Park, but equally their best chance of a win will be in front of their own fans, and if that happens they might get rewarded with an away day at one of the really big grounds. We are sure they’ll be busting a gut to win this, and think they will with one of those freakish goals that only the FA Cup produces.
