WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE? -Transportation to and from the Genova airport. Camogli is a small Italian fishing village located on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, on the Gulfo Paradiso of the Italian Riviera. Its a city full of history and culture. Camogli was an incredible seaport. In its heyday, its fleet consisted of hundreds of tall ships, nicknaming the village “city of a thousand white sails”. In 1978 the city hosted a large fleet of Napoleon’s ships. Camogli is also known for its colorful houses that line the beach. The house colors once helped the fisherman of Camogli find their way back to their port. It is the perfect place for outdoor activities—biking, hiking and of course, playing water polo in the sea. The food is simple and fresh, centering on fish, paired with pasta and vegetables. Wine, olives (and amazing olive oil), and homemade cheese are also abundant. People are relatively very friendly, and most speak English. It's also very safe-- people are still accustomed to leaving doors unlocked and there is very little crime. But of course, just as in any tourist destination, keep a close eye on wallets, phones etc.

What is Camogli like?

WHERE IS CAMOGLI?Camogli is located on the Italian Riviera, on the northwest coast of Italy, surrounded by the Portofino Mountains and the hills of Genova. Cities around Camogli include Recco, Santa Margherita, Rapallo, Sori, Bogliasco, Chiavari and more. Genova is 20min by car or train.

WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?

Camogli boasts a hot summer and a cold winter. July and August are the hottest months, with temps often reaching into the 90’s and above. July is very humid and hot. Spring and fall are comfortable and usually in the 70’s, while winters can get cold but are usually just very rainy.

IS WATER POLO POPULAR IN ITALY?

Water Polo is the national sport of Italy and a very popular pastime. Italian players grow up by the sea and start playing water polo as early as five years

old. During the summer, water polo courses are set up directly in the sea and are used for professional

games as well as amateur fun. Most everyone knows a lot and genuinely

understands the game as well. When the National Team is playing, the entire country stops and

celebrates. Italian youth teams are very good and the water polo program in Camogli is considered one of the best youth programs in Europe. Basically each

city lives for victory and the gold medal, so Italians can’t imagine life without the sea and water polo. For athletes who love the sport, this is one of the

best places in the world to be!

WHAT LANGUAGE IS SPOKEN? THE LOCAL LANGUAGE IS ITALIAN. SINCE CAMOGLI IS A TOURIST TOWN, MOST PEOPLE SPEAK BASIC ENGLISH AND RESTAURANTS USUALLY HAVE AN ENGLISH COPY OF THE MENU. !

WHAT CURRENCY IS USED? !ITALY IS PART OF THE EUROPEAN UNION WHICH USES THE EURO. THE CURRENT EXCHANGE RATE IS 1 DOLLAR: 1.2 EURO

WHERE WILL THE ATHLETES BE STAYING?

We currently house players at one of the following: -The Villa Manuelina (http://www.manuelinalavilla.com/index_en.php) located in the nearby town of Recco and a 10min walk to the city center. -La Camogliese (http://www.lacamogliese.it/camere-e.html) located at the beginning of the Camogli waterfront walkway directly on the sea. -Da “O” Vittorio (http://www.daovittorio.it/home_m.html) located in Recco and an 8 min walk to the City Center. -Albergo Augusta (http://www.htlaugusta.it ) also located in Camogli. The hotel will be chosen depending on availability and number of trip participants.

WHAT WILL THE HOTEL ROOMING SITUATION BE LIKE? ATHLETES ARE HOUSED IN GROUPS OF 2, 3 OR 4 PER ROOM, BUT EACH ROOM WILL HAVE THEIR OWN BATHROOM.

!WHAT WILL THE FOOD/MEALS BE LIKE?

BREAKFAST WILL BE A VARIETY OF MEATS AND CHEESES, CROISSANTS, YOGURTS AND FRUITS. LUNCHES AND DINNERS USUALLY FEATURE MEAT, CHICKEN, FISH, PASTA, FOCACCIA, FRESH VEGETABLES AND/OR POTATOES. ATHLETES CAN MAKE SPECIAL

REQUESTS, BUT THESE ORDERS MUST BE FOR THE GROUP AS A WHOLE. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF SOMEONE HAS AN ALLERGY SO WE CAN ORGANIZE ACCORDINGLY.

WHERE WILL THE ATHLETES TRAIN AND WITH WHOM? MORNING TRAININGS ARE HELD AT THE RARI NANTES CAMOGLI POOL IN CAMOGLI. THE AFTERNOON/NIGHT SCRIMMAGES WILL

DEPEND ON WHO THE TEAM WILL TRAIN AGAINST. THE ATHLETES WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN WITH AROUND TEN TEAMS THROUGHOUT THE AREA. EXAMPLES INCLUDE CHIAVARI, RECCO, SORI, BOGLIASCO, LAVAGNA, GENOVA, SAVONA AND FLORENCE. DURING MORNING PRACTICE TEAMS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO CAMOGLI’S 33METER POOL. IT IS COMMON TO HAVE

SOME TRAININGS AT THE 'HOME' POOL AND OTHERS AT POOLS IN NEARBY CITIES.

IN THE SUMMER MONTHS PRACTICES CAN BE HELD IN THE SEA. ATHLETES WILL TRAIN WITH TEAMS APPROPRIATE FOR THEIR SKILL LEVEL. GAMES WILL BE ARRANGED AGAINST VARIOUS LOCAL OR VISITING CLUBS, GIVING THE ATHLETES

THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN AND PLAY AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL AND TO BECOME FULLY IMMERSED IN WATER POLO.

Who is responsible for meeting the group and taking care of details along the way? Cassie Azevedo and her husband Stefano are in charge of making sure your group is safely transported to and from the airport, and also to and from trainings each day. Stefano has lived in Camogli his entire life and played with the Rari Nantes Professional Team for several years. After graduating from CSULB in 2006, Cassie moved to Hungary to play professionally, followed by a stint at several of the local Italian Division 1 teams. She has been living in Camogli ever since retiring. In 2011 Cassie and Stefano were married and in 2012 they welcomed their little boy Jackson. Cassie is in charge of all European Water Polo Trips and has been planning trips for AWP for the past 7 years. She and Stefano will be your guides throughout your entire experience.

WHAT TYPE OF TRANSPORTATION WILL BE PROVIDED FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL? !A 50 passenger bus will be provided for airport pick-up. Transportation to/from trainings and games will depend on the number of participants, using either the 50 passenger or a smaller 30 passenger bus.

*The bus will be used ONLY by Azevedo Water Polo clients. If parents or others who are not part of the AWP program would like to use our transportation there are two possibilities:

-Airport pick and drop off only from GENOVA: 5euro

-Full use of bus i.e. trainings and games throughout the trip: 30euro

CAMOGLI. THERE ARE TWO SMALLER HOSPITALS IN RECCO AND RAPALLO (BOTH 5 MIN DRIVES FROM CAMOGLI) THAT DEAL WITH LOW EMERGENCY

SITUATIONS.

GENOVA IS A 30MIN DRIVE AWAY AND A CITY FILLED WITH CULTURE AND BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE. YOU CAN VISIT CHRISTOPHER COLOMBUS’ HOUSE AND THE SEA PORT, WHICH BOASTS A WORLD FAMOUS AQUARIUM, A LARGE SHIP AND A SUBMARINE MUSEUM. LUNCH CAN BE ARRANGED AT ONE OF THE MANY LOCAL RESTAURANTS.

PRICE: 150EURO PER GROUP

KAYAK/SUPKAYAKS AND STAND UP PADDLE BOARDS WILL BE PROVIDED BY OUTDOOR PORTOFINO, LOCATED AT THE COVE BEFORE NIASCA. TRIPS WILL BE BASED OFF OF A PRIVATE BEACH, COMPLETE WITH SACK LUNCHES. NIASCA IS LOCATED BETWEEN PORTOFINO AND SANTA MARGHERITA, TWO OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER CITIES IN THE REGION.
